Let us make this as prayerful a week as possible and attend all the ceremonies of the sacred Triduum. Let us unite ourselves very closely to our Lord in all that He is to endure for our salvation. In this way we will be open and receptive to the gift of special Easter graces when we joyfully celebrate the Lord’s glorious Resurrection. A crucial aspect of our preparation for these most holy days is to make sure we have been to confession before Easter. Many in the parish have a wonderful devotion to regularly receiving this sacrament of mercy, forgiveness and grace, but others struggle with the sacrament. If you find it difficult please pray earnestly for the grace to make a good confession and then simply decide to act and be present outside the confessional during one of the numerous opportunities in the parish to receive this sacrament of mercy before Easter. If you find it difficult to know what to say the priest will only be too happy to assist you. This Year of Mercy and these holy and graced days of Holy Week and Easter are a time to renew and deepen our faith and our commitment to it. Jesus the Lord is the way, the truth and eternal life. If we have been slipping in our faith lately now is the ideal time to check ourselves and renew our commitment to live the Catholic faith wholeheartedly in Christ without compromise or carelessness. The reflection this week is from an unknown source but it powerfully expresses what can happen in a person with wavering or lazy faith. If we somehow recognize ourselves in this reflection let’s use our participation in Holy Week to wholeheartedly come back to the right path and begin with a good confession in preparation for Easter grace. Fr Andrew Wise PP The road from light into darkness begins slowly. It is like a twilight. The person still believes, still practices their faith, but in certain areas of life they begin to leave God’s law behind. Attractions grow that were never tolerated before. Religious practices become secondary and routine. The flower is cut off from its deep roots of faith and no longer draws nourishment from the soil. The person can no longer fight the culture and soon becomes one with it. The joys found in religious practices fade and the heart is consumed with worldly goals. The soul becomes powerless in the face of temptations and more and more succumbs to a lifestyle that it would previously have rejected. The soul has not yet fallen into darkness but it skirts the edges, stumbles often, rises slowly and is greatly weakened while Satan waits for his moment, ready to claim a soul that had lived in the light. A reminder that Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence from meat.

From the Parish Priest Dear Parishioners,

We begin Holy Week today as we remember Jesus’ humble entry into Jerusalem as our Saviour and King, ready to do battle with the full force of evil and sin and to conquer them with His divine love and forgiveness.

Palm Sunday - Year C

19th/20th March 2016

SUNDAY MASS READINGS

First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 The Lord has given me a disciple’s tongue. So that I may know how to reply to the wearied, he provides me with speech. Each morning he wakes me to hear, to listen like a disciple. The Lord has opened my ear. For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn away. I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at my beard; I did not cover my face against insult and spittle. The Lord comes to my help, so that I am untouched by the insults. So, too, I set my face like flint; I know I shall be shamed.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm 21 (Said by all)

All who see me deride me. They curl their lips, they toss their heads. ‘He trusted in the Lord, let him save him: let him release him if this is his friend.’

Many dogs have surrounded me, a band of the wicked beset me. They tear holes in my hands and my feet, I can count every one of my bones.

They divide my clothing among them. They cast lots for my robe. O Lord, do not leave me alone, my strength, make haste to help me!

I will tell of your name to my brethren and praise you where they are assembled. ‘You who fear the Lord give him praise; all sons of Jacob, give him glory. Revere him, Israel’s sons.’

Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 His state was divine, yet Christ did not cling to his equality with God but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave, and became as men are; and being as all men are, he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross. But God raised him up high and gave him the name which is above all other names so that all beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name of Jesus and that every tongue should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! Christ became obedient for us even to death, dying on the cross. Therefore God raised him on high and gave him a name above all other names. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! Gospel: Luke 22: 14-23: 56 The Passion of our Lord according to Luke The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Memorial Acclamation: Number Two When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.
