Real World Use of Maths
This set of slides is part of a wider toolkit to support managers and staff with a
responsibility for maths at Early Level. The timings for each session are approximate
and may depend upon numbers of staff attending sessions and levels of discussions.

● Curiosity, Creativity & Confidence (60/90 minutes)
● Spatial Awareness (60/90 minutes)
● Understanding Number (120 minutes)
Staff are encouraged to start with the set of slides ‘Language of Maths’.
All sets of slides refer to the key messages from ‘Words Up’ training - please ensure
you familiarise yourself with these messages.

Each set of slides has been written as a 'discussion guide’ to encourage managers,
teachers & practitioners to reflect, discuss and share their thoughts/knowledge around
maths in their setting/classroom. Through discussion, teams will be encouraged to
identify small changes that they can make to improve their
practice/environment/engage learners and their families.
As you work through the slides, please ensure you allow time for reflections,
discussion and next steps.
Prior to training session:
● Print out this handout to have as a guide and to record notes/ideas
● PRINT or have available ‘Words Up’ Key Messages for your age/stage.
It is helpful for participants to have access to a paper copy for reference and to

This resource has been created to support settings and schools, across Highland, to discuss and
reflect how early maths is supported within their environment. All settings/schools are unique
and this guide has been created with this in mind. These slides were trialled in an early years
setting. Early Years Practitioners, P1 class teachers and a member of the Management Team
attended the sessions.
