Registered at the G.P.O. as a newspaper GREAT NEW LP FROM STONES IT'S out this week! - The long-awaited first L.P.by the Rolling Stones. No title on the sleeve, just a collection of twelve R & B -style numbers, in typical Stones' tradition. And a racing certainty for the best-selling lists-it could even push the Beatles off the top. Odd people turned up for the vari- ous sessions . . . the Stones have worked oil this album for at least three months. You can hear their road manager, Ian Stewart, on piano on some tracks; Gene Pitney is at the keyboard on others; and recording "genius" Phil Spector turns up on some others on maraccas. The Spec- tor influence is, there on some of the sound -tracks. MICK JAGGER and BRIAN JONES MOST POPULAR Here's an item -by -item breakdown on the disc. "Route 66," the old stan- dard, gets a fast, exciting treatment, obviously inspired by Chuck Berry's version. One of the most popular numbers in the Stones' stage act. "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" was written by Willie Dixon and turned into a hit by Muddy Waters several years ago. But the Stones change the tempo and give it an individual sound. Plenty of har- monica. On to "Honest I Do," slow and Bluesy, with a compulsive dance - THE SWINGING BLUE JEANS are currently doing fantastic business all over the world. Their "Hippy Hippy Shake" is high in the U.S. charts, while they have been invited to tour Russia. beat. This is an old Jimmy Reed number, whose material the Stones perform very competently. Side One closer is "Little by Little," the flip on "Not Fade Away." Rather a surprising move, we think, to in- clude thi 3 Jimmy Reed -flavoured original. Guitar and Harmonica and a subtle Mick Jagger vocal. Then comes "I'm a King Bee," the old Slim Harpo song. This is an atmospheric piece, with some pretty suggestive lyrics-clever ones, too. Next track is probably the best fast track on the L.P. It's "Carol," the Chuck Berry composition, and it's a driving, pounding and extremely well -performed number with plenty of tune and excellent guitar work. Mick is on top vocal form on this one. PLAINTIVE TUNE "Tell Me" was written by Mick and Keith Richard and is a slowish, plain- tive melody which is rather reminis- cent of several Buddy Holly tunes. The longest number on the L.P., it has plenty of blues flavour and is probably the best of the slow tracks. Then: "Can I Get a Witness," the Marvin Gaye R and B standard. Great set of lyrics and once more a fan- tastic beat is set up. There's some- thing compulsive about the Stones' version of this song and it would probably have made a good single for them. Gene Allison's "You Can Make It If You Try" is a slow, almost tortuous number that is in complete contrast to the rest of the set. Nevertheless, the blues come through strongly. And this may be rrfore popular than several of the more beaty tracks. "Walking the Dog" is the last track. This Rufus Thomas number was mimed to by the boys at the "Mods' Ball" at the Empire Pool, Wembley, where on Wednesday last week they received fantastic acclaim. Afterwards, they said: "We were very frightened. But it was great." So is this curtain -closer on their album! There it is, then. A debut L.P. of guaranteed appeal. And the great thing is that the Stones themselves, normally very critical of their own work, are very pleased with the result. A final word of praise to Andrew Loog Oldham, who recorded the sessions - he's living up to his "boast" that he'd be the top indepen- dent recording manager in Britain by November this year! Odd people turned up for the vari-ous sessions . . . the Stones haveworked oil this album for at leastthree months. You can hear theirroad manager, Ian Stewart, on pianoon some tracks; Gene Pitney is at thekeyboard on others; and recording"genius" Phil Spector turns up onsome others on maraccas. Why have such talentedartistes as Gerry and the Pace-makers, Freddie and the Dreamers,Billy J. paper, about a year ago, Iread: "Chuck Berry met

Now, in RecordMirror, from Chuck's own mouthcome the words: "I came up toChicago in 1955 to get myself acontract and Chess signed mealmost immediately." "Borne on the wind"-A jet plane from Nashville,Tenne7see-and I was lucky enough to be the firstjournalist to talk to this quality -performing star.

First he enthused about his new single, "It's Over," beingrush -released in Britain. He wrote it: "It's based on anotherpersonal experience of mine . " It is a sad ballad of alove affair that has ended.

Apparently there is adelay on getting tapes of thesong from the States, but itshould hit the stores in aweek or so. Incidentally, thisis the reason why Roy'sChristmas song, "PrettyPaper," was never releasedhere. He cut it at the Decca

studios during his last visit,but an ensuing mix-up overtapes meant British fansmissing out on a great song.

Roy's British tour opensat Slough on Saturday. Anysurprises being planned?

"Some artists want youto see them rather thanhear them or enjoy theirtalent. I try not to besomeone for you to seealthough you actually cometo see AND hear.

"A lot of singers come onstage and that's all there is.Just something to look at.This makes for a goodshow and dull listening. SoI try to combine both andnot be a sort of idol. I'm inthe business to sing andexpress myself so if peoplecome to listen I try to singwhat they want to hear . . .

ONCE again Manfred Mann have made what seems likean error. And once again a mistake may turn into a

big success.It happened on the Ml during a discussion in the band

van about finding a good -sounding title for Manfred Mann'sfollow-up to "5 4 3 2 1". Drummer Miko Hugg suddenlycame up with "Hubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble". It had afamiliar, Shakespearian ring about it. Everyone agreedthat Manfred Mann 1 (that's crummer Mike) had hit on apotential hit title. "Great!" said every Manfred Mann-including the one who is actually Manfred Mann.

But, as you might expectfrom a group that includesa man called Manfred Mann(who is not the leader) andfour others who are alsoreferred to individually andcollectively as Manf re dMann, they had got thingsa trifle confused: it is"Double, Double, Toil andTrouble" that the witches inMacbeth say when brewingup trouble.

All the same, the insertionof "Hubble Bubble" (whichis in fact a type of smokingpipe) has added a certainsomething-a weird kind ofmemorability.

IMPACT"It was quite unintention-

al," confessed Manfred (theManfred, piano player in thegroup). "We just got itwrong but it seems -to haveturned out well. like our ori-ginal decision to call all fiveof us Manfred Mann, Sure,it's silly, people get muddledover it, but since the grouphas made a success of it, Idon't think it matters. Thename has got impact andwhen people are really in-terested in the group theysoon sort out who's who. Butif it makes things easier foranybody to call us the Man-

adapted the melody."Although their new effort

is nothing like as memorablysimple as "5 4 3 2 1", MikeHugg (in particular) is moreconfident about its poten-tialities than anything elsethey've done. Already, theyknow it is bound to collectgood sales because it hasbeen chosen to replace theirown "5 4 3 2 1" as thesignature tune of ReadySteady, Go - not becauseprogramme editor FrancisHitching has any leaningtowards the group. "It's justthat their disc is the mostlikely hit we've heard," hesaid.

One reason why the Man-freds are doing so well maybe the wide variety ofsounds the boys are interes-ted in. Roughly speaking,

three of them (Manfred andthe two Mikes) came intopop music via an interest inmodern jazz, and two (Pauland Tom) via an interest inprimitive blues. Both "sides"have respect for the others'preferred music and haveenlarged their enjoyment ofmusic as a result of contactwith each other. Their in-fluences have combined toadd up to a distinctive,commercial sound-as theirforthcoming LP will show.For, as in their personalappearances, the album willinclude such numbers asCannonball Adderley's "Sack0' Woe" and John LeeHooker's "Dimples" - anunusual (though far fromincompatible) mixture that'sproving very popular withan increasing proportion ofthe populace.

GREAT UNKNOWNS FIRST IN THE THIRD OF THIS POPULAR SERIES

WHENI was browsing

around a record shopsome months back, anothercustomer was intent on buy-ing a copy of "Anyone WhoHad A Heart." Being morediscriminating than most heasked to hear "the one byDonna Warwick as well."

He bought the DionneWarwick version, butwhether or not it was be-cause he liked it more thanCilia Black's cover version,or just that his girl frienddidn't like Cilia Black I shallnever know. However, Ihope he liked Dionne's, andI hope he also rushes outand buys "Walk On By,"but this isn't as likely seeingthat no one has botheredto cover it yet.

BLUESDionne Warwick is a

coloured female vocalist inher early twenties who inthe States is second only toMary Wells in blues popu-larity. She has great talentand records in the Statesfor Scepter records whohave had several outlets in

DIONNE WARWICKBritain - namely Top Rank,HMV, Stateside and finallyPye International. Dionne'sfirst two discs were onStateside, and her last threeon Pye.

Dionne herself was bornin the little town of EastOrange in Connecticut andshe attended the HartfordSchool of music, When sheleft college she formed herown singing group andaccompanied such artistes as;he Shirelles and manyothers. It was through theShirelles that she came tobe offered a contract withScepter records, and herfirst offering for them wasthe fantastic "Don't Make MeOver."

ONE of the most unusual records to get in the charts forsome time is a little ditty entitled "Juliet" by a group of

lads from Blackburn who call themselves The Four Pennies.Unusual because, unlike the majority of the beat groupscurrently making the charts, it is an original song and anout -of -the -rut treatment. These two things could well bethe factors which have led to unexpected success in ourcharts, at a time when ballads are at their least popular ebb.

Actually had it not beenfor a huge debt of £2,000,the Four Pennies may neverhave been formed! Abouttwo years ago they used tomeet at a music shop inBlackburn, where togetherthey had run up this pheno-menal debt on musical equip-ment. However, the owner ofthe shop, Miss Reidy, had agreat deal of confidence inthe boys' talent, and per-suaded them to turn profes-sional in order to re -pay herthe money. The shop hap-pened to he in Penny Street,Blackburn, so they took thename and formed The FourPennies. At the shop theyspent hours practising andperfecting the sort of soundthey were aiming at, with thecontinual encouragement ofMiss Reidy.

man for the group is LionelMorton, who also playsrhythm guitar. Other mem-bers are Mike Wilsh, bassguitar and vocals, FritzFryer, lead guitarist a n dvocals, and Alan Buck, drums.Lionel told me "the sort ofthing we like doing is bal-lads, with a leaning towardsfolk music. Actually 'Tell MeGirl' was supposed to be the'A' side of our disc, but'Juliet' came out so well at

MICKEY FINN AND THE BLUE MEN seen in the East End Streets.

SOME groups get dozensof big hits, but never

manage to put an image, orat least an atmosphericimage over to the public.But now, one group, withoutany hits to their credit havemanaged to put over a greatnew image-namely the EastEnd mod image.

They are Mickey Finn andthe Blue Men, the first all -white blue beat group inthe country who were play-ing blue beat music longbefore anybody thought ofcommercialising it. The teamstarted about eighteenmonths ago and have builtup for themselves a con-siderable reputation inLondon.

MODSThey come from Mile End

and are very very popularwith the Mods around thatarea-mainly because theseboys are probably the onlyMod group on the stage -well a couple of them atleast.

Their new disc is an oldBo Diddley number entitled"Pills," subtitled "Love'sLabours Lost" for noapparent reason. And it'sgiven a heavy blue beat

backing, and raucus vocalfrom the guys. They used torecord for Ziggy Jackson'sBlue Beat label where theyhad a very big seller withtheir version of the old EliasAnd The Zig Zag Jive Flutesnumber "Tom Hark." Exceptthat they called their one"Tom Hark Goes Blue Beat."

Lead singer is AlanAnthony, an immaculatelydressed individual whomanages to sing the mostearthy vocals imaginable -as can be heard on the flipof "Torn Hark Goes BlueBeat", and also on bothsides of the new Oriole re-lease. Other members of theteam are John Cooke, organ,John Burkett, bass guitar,and Richard Brand ondrums. Mickey Finn himselfplays lead guitar.

What with the originalityof the boys and theirmaterial, and the fact thatthey were the first in theirfield there's all likelihoodthat they can make it big inno time.

The boys have been highlypraised by Prince Buster,self-styled founder of theblue beat sound s, whoreckons the lads are justgreat.

He's right.

THE STORYOF PETER'S

FACESWHAT an odd name for a

group! Peter's faces, no less.The Peter concerned is Peter

Nelson, singer and bass guitarist.And the "Faces" bit originatedwhen the recording manager RayHorricks heard other groups usingthe word 'faces' about otherPeople when they didn't reallyknow their names.

YOUTH CLUBSNow the group have made their

debut for Pye Piccadilly-two self -written pieces "Why Did YouBring Him To The Dance", whichI reckon is darned good, and"She's In Love".

Story behind Peter's Facesstarts some seven years ago, inthe Skiffle Era. Peter Nelson anddrummer Peter Coleman frontedPeter and the Travellers. Theydid mostly dance -hall gigs andyouth clubs in Middlesex.

As musical styles changed, sodid the group personnel. Leadguitarist John Macdonald joinedthe group; then Tony Hall camein as rhythm guitarist and saxo-phonist. Incidentally, are thereany contenders for Tony's claimto be the tallest group memberin the recording business? He'ssix feet five inches!

Eighteen months ago, the boysturned professional. They one-nighted it up and down thecountry and also did a month inGermany at the famed Star Clubof Hamburg.

A demo disc to Ray Horricksclinched the recording side - hejust re -arranged the song whichhas become their top side.

A brief breakdown of the ladsconcerned: Peter Nelson is 21.shares a liking for modern jazzwith the rest of the boys. Mainhobby: composing songs. Likescasual clothes and eating Chinesegrub.

Peter Coleman, also 21, goes formod clothes. Was once a lift en-gineer; now rates driving fastcars as his hobby. John Mac-Donald is 22, the oldest "Face".Joined the group straight fromschool. Can't stand the "modcult", though he's matey withPeter Coleman.

TRAVELLINGAnd Tony Hall, only 20 but con-

vinced he has finally stoppedgrowing, is keen on travelling.Which is something he'll getplenty of, ere long.

Group ambition: to get a discto top spot in the charts. Thesefour "Faces" positively eruptwith smiles at the thought ofTHAT!

The National ChartAFTER a week's release, the Searchers leap into the charts

at number 20 with their "Don't Throw Your Love Away".pursued hotly by other hot discs like "Hubble Bubble Toil

& Trouble", and "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying", TheAnimals too look like making their mark on the scelne with theirinfectious "Baby Let Me Take You Home". Up top it seems thatPeter & Gordon may overtake the Beatles, either next week or theweek after, owing to the enormous numbers of Beatles discs beingsold so quickly, instead of over a longer period, thus enablingthem to top the chart longer. Not much else on the way up butwatch out for "My Boy Lollipop".

The Merseybeats make it three in a row with the1r gentle "Don'tTurn Around", while two more favourites come in at the lowerends of the lists. They are Kenny Lynch's "Stand By Me", whoseems to be gaining in sales of the Ben E. King song over theCassius Clay version. And Peter, Paul & Mary ease in with theirspiritual -type ditty "Tell It On The Mountain".

Dionne Warwick makes it with her lovely "Walk On By"-there's a feature on her on page seven in this issue.

QUESTIONTIME FOR

CLIFF!F. must be about the most pleasant person in the top -bracket of show business. After five years at the summit,

he still collects endless applause and ear -ripping -screams atevery performance. As he proved when I met him backstageat Luton recently . .

The "he", of course, is Cliff Richard. He'd just finished aforty -minute act, ranging from "Moon River" to "What'd ISay"-and the audience -reaction was still ringing in our ears.

Cliff was half -way throughhis three - week, nation - widetour, was none the worsefor his exertions . . . andanswered my questions veryenthusiastically.

Like "How will pop musicdevelop?"

Cliff: "Who really can tell?But I do sincerely think ithas taken a turn for thebetter over the last year orso. Standards are improving."

Like "What sort of songs doyou most enjoy performing?"

FAVOURITESCliff: "Personally, I enjoy

most types. My favouriteartistes include Lena Horne,Ray Charles, Elvis Presley ...so that should give you someidea of my sort of music.But I have to sing to pleasean audience. For instance, ittook me five discs to get aNumber One - `Livin'Doll,' a ballad. So now I

heavily feature ballads. Mynext release is 'Constantly,'another ballad. I really dolike this one."

I asked: "Are you at allperturbed by the comparativefailure of 'I'm The LonelyOne'?"

Cliff: "Not a bit. Not a bit.""Ever have any sort of im-

pression that you're becom-ing a 'has been'? It's some-times suggested . . ."

Cliff: "If you are going bythe success of my recentdiscs, then I HAVE had it!I'm on the way down. But

on the other hand just takea look at tonight's audience. . . the place was packed."

The point was clear: I tookit. And asked some more.

"Do you mind all thescreaming from audiences?"

Cliff: "Not really. At leastthey scream in the rightplaces - you know, the up -tempo numbers. And they arequiet when I want them tobe."

I agreed.. I made the com-ment that the audience nowcame largely to see Cliff asan entertainer and not as asex idol . . . as many oftoday's performers are con-sidered.

MATUREDCliff: "When I first en-

tered the business some sixyears ago, I suppose I wasregarded as a sex idol. Butnow I feel I have matured.So has my audience."

Future plans?Cliff: "Later this year, I've

got a tour of Australia com-ing off and there's a pos-sibility of a London Palla-dium performance in May."

How would Cliff like bestto spend the rest of hiscareer?

Cliff: "We -e -ell. I supposethat I'd like to do a filmonce a year and a British

NEW EMI DISC SERIESEMI, are to put one of the

biggest promotion campaignsof the year behind their new

idea known as "Hot Six." On1 he Regal Zonophone label eachmonth a single is to be releasedfeaturing six titles from the topten, the price is the same as fora single. Unlike other labels whoProduce similiar copies of top hitsEMI are to name their artists.On the first will be The LeRoysand The Innocents and the titlesare Don't Throw Your Love Away,My Girl Lollipop. I Love YouBecause. Not Fade Away, I Be-lieve and Tell Me When. Thisfirst single is due out on April24th and you can hear all thetracks on a special Luxembourgshow at 8 p.m. on April 28th. Thetwo groups will appear on 'ReadySteady Go' to perform the discon May 1st. This is quite a re-vival for the Regal Zonophonelabel which until the release ofthe Joy Strings single had beende v oted to Salvation Army re-cordings.
