This Wednesday also saw the last of the HSC examinations. They have their Formal on Monday evening with the pre drinks on the rooftop at the Woollahra Campus. This allows all the parents the opportunity of seeing how well the boys clean up and to admire the dresses of the girls. This fabulous event allows us the opportunity to say a final goodbye to this wonderful group of students. Next week the Year 10 students start their final examinations while the Middle School wraps up the cultural calendar with the Public Speaking Finals on Tuesday evening, The Year 9 Drama performances on Wednesday and the Dance Showcase on Thursday evening. Another event filled week to look forward too. Have a good week. Dave Pitcairn

Explorations in Sound is the best way to describe the works heard last week at the Sydney Symphony’s Meet the Music Series concert. Lush orchestral writing dominated the night, beginning with Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes. A world Premiere performance of Pipa Concerto No. 2, commissioned by the SSO was an impressive demonstration of this Chinese Lute-like instrument played by Wu Man, who was generous enough to give a virtuosic encore of a traditional Chinese folk tune. Lastly we heard the richness of Dvorack’s 9

th Symphony from the New World. The

Meet the Music Series is a wonderful way to experience a world class or-chestra playing both traditional and contemporary repertoire and I encourage every music student and music lover to come and attend these concerts. Jennifer Roberts

Students in Year 8 have been working hard all semester on their scripted drama scenes. The plays chosen this year were "Ernie's Incredible Illucinations" by Alan Ayckbourn and "Stories in the Dark” by Debra Oswald. Each play has engaged the students and given them the opportunity to flex their acting muscles. Well done to all Year 8 students on their Drama performances.

Year 7-9 Science students have been very busy this week creating oral presentations on various features of our Solar System. Next week will be an exciting week where all students will be delivering prepared speeches in small groups to demonstrate their understanding of concepts such the Evidence for the Big Bang Theory, Black Holes and comets, meteors and asteroids. Students will use their enhanced skills in Powerpoint and Prezi to create visually appealing presentations that will surely be enjoyed by all!

There has been a lot of discussion in the maths world lately about this year’s HSC examinations, in particular the degree of difficulty of the 2 unit paper. The arguments were neatly conveyed in the article that appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday 6

th November by David Whitehouse

from Shore. http://www.smh.com.au/comment/2unit-maths-paper-too-hard-board-of-studies-must-revise-it-20131105-2wzf1.html There is an ideological battle going on behind the scenes between pure mathematicians who are reluctant to change anything about our calculus based courses and the more progressive mathematicians who want to see a more relevant and modern course that prepares students for the rigours of mathematics at university. And that may include the use of technology. The students across the state have voted with their feet and moved to General which is a relevant course for the modern student who knows that they do not want to pursue a maths based course at university. Interestingly the content of this course has evolved regularly over the last 20 years whereas the calculus based courses have not. But is this really what we want? Do we want half of our students either not doing Maths or doing General? Is this going to deliver us the mathematical minds we need to confront the challenges that lie ahead? I think that Mathematics should be compulsory for all students until the end of high school and we must have courses to suit the needs across the spectrum of students. I think that the calculus based courses are in need of a drastic overhaul to reflect more contempory themes than the ones we have been teaching since the mid 1970’s. And I think that the 2 unit course should be viewed in the same way as 2 unit courses in other subjects. At the moment there is no reward for students attempting the 2 Unit course. They get a much better return on investment by studying the General course or any other 2 Unit course because in other subjects everyone competes on an even footing. Brad Palmer
