About ClimateKeeper2. (on some models)How it WorksTheClimateKeeper2 is the industrysmost advanced refrigeration system, delivering optimum temperature andhumidity performance to keep food gardenfresh longer and reduce freezer burn, whilemaintaining E star-level efficiency.

    TheClimateKeeper2 system features two

evaporatorsone for the refrigerator andone for the freezer.

This provides two separate cooling systems, and separates the airflow between the freshfood and freezer compartments duringnormal cooling operations.*

This ensures that the humidity levels inthe fresh food compartment are significantlyhigher than in a conventional system,**allowing fresh produce and other unsealedfoods to retain their moisture content andfreshness longer. Moisture sensitive foodssuch as fresh fruit, salads, rice, etc., can nowbe stored on open shelves without excessivemoisture loss. Due to the higher humidity in

the refrigerator, you may on occasionexperience fog or small amounts of moisturein the refrigerator compartment. This isnormal and may come and go as differentfood loads and environmental conditionschange. Wipe dry with a paper towel if desired.

The separate airflow system minimizesthe mixing of air between the twocompartments, which reduces fresh foododor transfer to improve the taste of ice.

TheClimateKeeper2 system also reducesthe number of defrosting cycles in the freezerevaporator, thereby reducing freezer burn.

*Freezer air is used in the CustomCoolfeature.

**Testing shows a higher level of humidity inthe Fresh Food section in ClimateKeeper2 refrigerators versus conventional units.

s Beverages and foods should not bequick-chilled in the ice storage drawer.Cans, bottles or food packages in thestorage drawer may cause the icemakeror auger to jam.

s To keep dispensed ice from missingthe glass, put the glass close to, butnot touching, the dispenser opening.

s Some crushed ice may be dispensedeven though you selected CUBED.This happens occasionally when a fewcubes accidentally get directed tothe crusher.

s After crushed ice is dispensed, somewater may drip from the chute.

s Sometimes a small mound of snowwill form on the door in the ice chute. This condition is normal and usuallyoccurs when you have dispensedcrushed ice repeatedly. The snowwill eventually evaporate.

    Trim kits and decorator panels.

Read these instructions completely and carefully.

Before You BeginSome models are equipped with trim kits that allow you to install door panels. You can order pre-cut black, white, bisque or stainless steel decorator panels from GE Parts and Accessories,800.626.2002, or you can add wood panels to match your kitchen cabinets.

Panels less than 1/4 (6 mm) thickWhen installing wood panels less than 1/4 (6 mm) thick, you need to create a filler panel, such as 1/8

cardboard, that will fit between the face of the door and the wood panel. If you are installing the pre-cutdecorator panels, pre-cut filler panels are included in the kit. The combined thickness of the decoratoror wood panel and the filler panel should be 1/4 (6 mm).

    For CustomStyle models

3/4 (19 mm) or Raised PanelA raised panel design screwed or glued to a 1/4 (6 mm) thick backing, or a 3/4 (19 mm) routed board canbe used. The raised portion of the panel must be fabricated to permit clearances of at least 2 (5.1 cm) fromthe handle side for fingertip clearance.

Panels thicker than 1/4 (6 mm), up to 3/4 (19 mm) max, will require that the outer 5/16 (8 mm) of panelperimeter be no thicker than 1/4 (6 mm).

Weight limitations for custom panels:Fresh Food 38 lbs. (17 kg) max.Freezer Door 28 lbs. (13 kg) max.

INSTALLING THE WATER LINE(ICEMAKER & DISPENSER MODELS)

Recommended copper water supply kits are WX8X2,WX8X3 or WX8X4, depending on the amount of tubingyou need. Approved plastic water supply lines are GESmartConnect Refrigerator Tubing (WX08X10006,WX08X10015 and WX08X10025).When connecting your refrigerator to a GE ReverseOsmosis Water System, the only approved installationis with a GE RVKit. For other reverse osmosis watersystems, follow the manufacturers recommendations. If the water supply to the refrigerator is froma Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration SystemAND the refrigerator also has a water filter, use the refrigerators filter bypass plug. Usingthe refrigerators water filtration cartridge inconjunction with the RO filter can result in hollow

ice cubes and slower water flow from the waterdispenser. This water line installation is not warranted bythe refrigerator or icemaker manufacturer. Followthese instructions carefully to minimize the riskof expensive water damage.Water hammer (water banging in the pipes) inhouse plumbing can cause damage to refrigeratorparts and lead to water leakage or flooding. Call aqualified plumber to correct water hammer beforeinstalling the water supply line to the refrigerator. To prevent burns and product damage, do not hookup the water line to the hot water line.If you use your refrigerator before connectingthe water line, make sure the icemaker powerswitch is in the O (off) position.Do not install the icemaker tubing in areas wheretemperatures fall below freezing. When using any electrical device (such as a powerdrill) during installation, be sure the device is doubleinsulated or grounded in a manner to prevent thehazard of electric shock, or is battery powered. All installations must be in accordance with localplumbing code requirements.

NOTE: The only GE approved plastic tubing isthat supplied in GE SmartConnect RefrigeratorTubing kits. Do not use any other plastic watersupply line because the line is under pressureat all times. Certain types of plastic will crackor rupture with age and cause water damageto your home. A GE water supply kit (containing tubing,

shutoff valve and fittings listed below) is availableat extra cost from your dealer or from Partsand Accessories, 800.626.2002 (in Canada1.888.261.3055).

A cold water supply. The water pressure must bebetween 20 and 120 p.s.i. (1.48.1 bar).

Power drill. 1/2 or adjustable wrench. Straight and Phillips blade screwdriver.

Two 1/4 outer diameter compression nutsand 2 ferrules (sleeves) to connect the coppertubing to the shutoff valve and the refrigeratorwater valve.OR

If you are using a GE SmartConnect

Refrigerator Tubing kit, the necessary fittingsare preassembled to the tubing.

If your existing copper water line has a flaredfitting at the end, you will need an adapter(available at plumbing supply stores) to connectthe water line to the refrigerator OR you can cutoff the flared fitting with a tube cutter and thenuse a compression fitting. Do not cut formed endfrom GE SmartConnect Refrigerator tubing.

Shutoff valve to connect to the cold water line. The shutoff valve should have a water inlet with aminimum inside diameter of 5/32 at the point of connection to the COLD WATER LINE. Saddle-typeshutoff valves are included in many water supplykits. Before purchasing, make sure a saddle-typevalve complies with your local plumbing codes.

Choose a location for the valve that is easilyaccessible. It is best to connect into the sideof a vertical water pipe. When it is necessaryto connect into a horizontal water pipe, makethe connection to the top or side, rather than atthe bottom, to avoid drawing off any sedimentfrom the water pipe.

    CHOOSE THE VALVE LOCATION2

DRILL THE HOLE FOR THE VALVE3Drill a 1/4 hole in the water pipe (even if usinga self-piercing valve), using a sharp bit. Removeany burrs resulting from drilling the hole inthe pipe.

Take care not to allow water to drain intothe drill.

Failure to drill a 1/4 hole may result in reducedice production or smaller cubes.

Normal operating sounds. ge.comNewer refrigerators sound different from older refrigerators. Modern refrigerators have more featuresand use newer technology.

    HUMMM...WHOOSH...

s The new high efficiency compressor may run fasterand longer than your old refrigerator and you mayhear a high-pitched hum or pulsating sound whileit is operating.

s Sometimes the refrigerator runs for an extended period, especially when the doors are opened frequently. Thismeans that the Frost Guard feature is working to preventfreezer burn and improve food preservation.

s You may hear a whooshing sound when the doors close. This is due to pressure equalizing within the refrigerator.

s You may hear the fans spinning at high speeds. This happens when the refrigerator is first plugged in,when the doors are opened frequently or when a largeamount of food is added to the refrigerator or freezercompartments. The fans are helping to maintain thecorrect temperatures.

s If either door is open for over 3 minutes, you may hearthe fans come on in order to cool the light bulbs.

s The fans change speeds in order to provide optimalcooling and energy savings.

s You may hear the fans running after selectingQuickFreeze or one of the CustomCool settings.

    CLICKS, POPS,CRACKS and CHIRPS

s You may hear cracking or popping sounds whenthe refrigerator is first plugged in. This happens asthe refrigerator cools to the correct temperature.

s Electronic dampers click open and closed to provideoptimal cooling and energy savings.

s The compressor may cause a clicking or chirpingsound when attempting to restart (this could takeup to 5 minutes).

s The electronic control board may cause a clickingsound when relays activate to control refrigeratorcomponents.

s Expansion and contraction of cooling coils during andafter defrost can cause a cracking or popping sound.

s On models with an icemaker, after an icemaking cycle, you may hear the ice cubes dropping into the icebucket.

    WATER SOUNDS

sThe flow of refrigerant through the freezer cooling coilsmay make a gurgling noise like boiling water.

s Water dropping on the defrost heater can cause asizzling, popping or buzzing sound during the defrostcycle.

s A water dripping noise may occur during the defrostcycle as ice melts from the evaporator and flows intothe drain pan.

s Closing the door may cause a gurgling sound due topressure equalization.

Do you hear what I hear? These sounds are normal.

    For additional information on normal

icemaker and dispenser operating sounds, see the About the automatic icemaker and About the ice and water dispenser sections.
