individuals and their communi8es; solu8ons cannot be pushed.
• New, distributed and highly par8cipatory systems imply new roles for public and private spheres: demand/user/ci8zen driven open RDI enabled by ICT.

Conclusions (1/2) • The big global challenges of our 8me demand mass
par8cipa8on of users/consumers/ci8zens. Finding solu8ons to climate change, managing demographic shijs, presen8ng and managing chronic diseases, providing safe water supplies and maintaining food security will require the pooling of diverse types of knowledge and resources, and harnessing the mo8va8on of millions of individuals and their communi8es.
• Technologies are not sufficient to resolve the challenges in a sustainable way, user behaviour transforma8on is required and this can be enabled by the use of ICT and the Living Lab methodologies.

Conclusions (2/2) • Europe needs to address its poli8cal integra8on leading to more
Europe. The current crisis has uncovered hidden fragili8es but also fostered new solu8ons. Regions such as Danube and cross-‐border collabora8on using Living Lab methodologies can accelerate a faster and more effec8ve integra8on.
• Universi8es need to be more involved with the other stakeholders of the innova8on system. Technology is important but needs to be complemented with other knowledge and exper8se such as entrepreneurship culture and innova8on and business prac8ces.
• Smart Specializa8on should be “SMART”, bringing together the convergence of Future Internet, Living Labs and social innova8on leading to sustainable societal transforma8on towards a becer and happier society.
