EXPERIMENT: Mechanics

AIM: To determine the relative density of the material of a paper clip.

THEOR: The density of a s!"stance is the ratio of the mass to the vol!me of the s!"stance.

#ensity In other terms is mass per !nit vol!me. Therefor the form!la for density can "e fo!nd

!sin$ the form!la: #ensity %&' ( Mass) *ol!me. #ensity. If the density of an o"+ect is less than

the density of the li,!id it is placed in- the o"+ect ill float. Hoever if the density of the o"+ect

is $reater than that of the li,!id it ill in/. Relative density is defined as the ration "eteen the

density of the s!"stance to the density of ater. Therefore Relative density  (  P r  ) ( #ensity of the

s!"stance(  P s') #ensity of ater% P '.

8. A 899 paper clips ere place on the triple "eam "alance to o"tain a its ei$ht

ater completely.

?. A meas!rin$ cylinder as then placed at the "ottom of the displacement can and the 899

paper clips ere placed into the can.@. The ater as alloed to drip completely into the meas!rin$ cylinder.

. After all the ater as alloed to drip o!t- the readin$ of t"e meas!rin$ cylinder as

PRE3A7TION2:

8. The paper clips ere placed on the centre of the triple "eam "alance to o"tain a more

acc!rate readin$>. All the ater as ens!red to have drained o!t completely from the displacement can

 "efore placin$ the paper clips.

. The paper clips ere placed into the displacement can $ently to ens!re that the ater

didnCt spash or ca!sed any aves that ill p!sh more ater o!t of the can?. All fans ere sitch off and indos ere closed to help prevent e5cessive ind from

 "loin$ the ater.

@. Instr!ments ere ens!red that there ere no systematic errors.

. 6hen readin$ the cylinder- It as ens!red that it as restin$ on a flat s!rface and the

"ottom of the menisc!s as read.

D. The s!rface here the displacement can rested on as ens!red that it as smooth and

had no slope.

2O7R3E2 O< ERROR:

8. Environmental ind as present hich o!ld have sli$htly "oed the ater.

>. All the ater molec!les o!ldnCt have drained o!t completely. 2ome o!ld have slic/ed

onto the spo!t.

. The can as sli$htly vi"rated d!e to sha/in$ of the s!rface.?. #!e to ins!fficient time- the displacement can as not alloed to f!lly settle o!t 899.

#I23722ION: The relative density as o"tained !sin$ the form!la #ensity ( Mass) *ol!me.

After cond!ctin$ the e5periment the mass and vol!me of one paper clip as 9.@8@$ and 9.88cm

respectively. After o"tainin$ those res!lts the density as then calc!lated and fo!nd to "e

?.B$cm4. <rom there- the relative density as calc!lated !sin$ the form!la Relative density

(  P r  ) ( #ensity of the s!"stance (  P s') #ensity of ater % P '. Fnoin$ that the density of ater is

8$cm4- the density of one paper clip is ?.B$cm4- relative density o!ld then "e

?.B$cm4)8$cm4 ( ?.B. 2ince the paper clip has a hi$her density than ater- if placed in ater

the paper clip ill sin/. Also as o"served- oil floats on ater. This th!s means that oil has a loer

density than 8$cm4. This ill also mean that a paper clip has a $reater density than that of oil

hich means that a paper clip if placed in oil ill also sin/ to the "ottom. This e5periment as

s!ccessf!l "!t co!ld have "een improved. 7sin$ a sensitive di$ital scale o!ld have "een more

e5periment as one of the least en+oya"le ones.
