1. Shopping Mall :A shopping mall, shopping Centre, shopping arcade, shopping precinct or simply mall is one or
more buildings forming a complex of shops representing merchandisers, with interconnectingwalkways enabling visitors to easily walk from unit to unit, along with a security, food shop,
wash room, parking areaa modern, indoor version of the traditional marketplace. A shopping
mall is a building or group of buildings that contains stores Shopping malls can be built in an
enclosed or open-air format also.
From early on, the design tended to be inward-facing, with malls following theories of how
customers could best be enticed in a controlled environment. Similar, the concept of a mall
having one or more "anchor" or "big box" stores was pioneered early, with individual stores or
smaller-scale chain stores intended to benefit from the shoppers attracted by the big stores. In
Bangladesh shopping mall built in 1955 named New Market but it took time to be popular.

2. History of Shopping Mall in Dhaka City :
The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is an early shopping mall dating from the 15th century. In 1819,London opened a shopping center called the Burlington Arcade. Milan, Italy built a shopping
center in the 1860s called the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.In the United States, people beganmoving to the suburbs during the 20th century. The Oxford Covered Market in Oxford, England
opened in 1774 and still runs today.
This trend of shopping mall flows to this Asian subcontinent in 1950s and this also flows to our
country Bangladesh. The first shopping mall of our country is called New Market.New
Market () situated north of Azimpur, Dhaka. The constraction began in 1952 by C&BDept. on 35 acres (140,000 s.m) of land during the period of Mr. Nurul Amin, the Chief Minister
of East Pakistan. Market was completed in 1954. Mr. Nurul Amin was also active in establishing
the first posh Hotel Shahbagh at Shahbagh area (now PG Hospital). This heralded the beginningof a new area of development towards modernizing Dhaka. Rickshaw ride or walking along the
narrow lanes of old Dhaka for shopping was not a happy experience for families. Old Dhaka was
too conservative, noisy and crowded. Ironically, Mr. Nurul Amins modernization projectboomeranged as people talked against it. Some believed New Market and Shahbagh Hotel were
made exclusively for Nurul Amins family. The rumor gave credence to common people, so
much so that in the general election of 1954, Muslim League was routed in East Pakistan by the
United Front of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq and MaulanaBhasani. Mr. Nurul Amin lost in election miserably against a less known student leader, losing
the deposit money. Though New Market was not famous at that time but day by day it became
famous because of all shopping facilities than other single shop.
After 1997 shopping became easy & popular specially to women. In 2000 that trend got so muchpopularity that many shopping malls build in Dhaka city.

12. Advantages of Shopping Malls in DhakaCity:
Dhaka city is now full of shopping malls now-a-days. Shopping malls becomes an important
part to our day to day life. We go to shopping mall for many reasons. Though all reasons are
not beneficial but most of them are good for us. No matter what mall you visit, you get
almost same advantages from shopping mall.
There are so many advantages of shopping malls. Such as
Malls are one of the friendliest places. No matter what mall you visit, there is alwaysa group of people walking around. A shopping mall is almost like an indoor park.
We find everything needed at one stop. This is one of the great benefits of shoppingat malls. Everything we need is more than likely in the mall.
Some people don't like to go out because it may be too hot, rainy, or cold. In the mall, the temperature is controlled to the right temperature. People may forget all about the
weather once they enter inside.
Parking is one of the major irritations for people who go into the city to shop.Shopping at malls eliminates this problem, because parking is provided either free of
charge or for a nominal fee.
The food court is very beneficial to mall shoppers. While shopping if anyone getshungry, the food court is right inside.
A certain promotion, sale, or giveaway is being offered, the companies know that themall is the best place to target people. You'd be surprised at how many offers are
present in the mall. One day you might get lucky or discover a unique product.

Just because we go to the mall does not mean we have to buy something. We couldjust hang out with our friends or whomever we may be with. We could just check out
the latest fashion and all the free benefits of shopping at malls.
It is hard to go out to the mall and not find anything we like. Even if we do not buyanything the same day, we will eventually buy something that excites us. Its
beneficial to find something that we like so much.
Exercise is always a plus. While we shop, we can get our exercise going on too. Mostmalls are large enough to get at least a 30-minute workout.
If you ever get tired of standing, there are always benches nearby. Most people neverget tired of shopping, but it is always nice to know that we can stop and take a rest if
we want to.
Visiting a shopping mall is advantageous because of the numerous stores housed in one complex.
Groceries, clothes, shoes, reading material, food courts, cinemas and entertainment arcades are
available in one place. It is possible to spend an entire day out at the mall, shopping, eating,
taking in a movie or playing games. Malls make great meeting places for friends to catch up overcoffee at a caf or a meal at the food court. Families get to do their weekly shopping, pick up
odds and ends and keep the kids entertained at the mall.

13.Bad Effect Shopping Malls in Dhaka City:Everything has some bad effects though it has a lot of advantages. Shopping malls also have
some bad effects in real circumstances. But shopping malls are now a part of our society. Bad
effects of shopping malls are given below
One of the major disadvantages of shopping malls is their inconveniences. Theseinclude excessive crowding, especially on weekends and holidays. Sometimes it
seems that everyone has the same idea---to congregate at the mall. Crowded aisles
and stores make shopping very difficult; people often end up forgetting items theyneeded to buy.
Parking can also be a problem when the mall is very crowded. That situation peoplehas to go back home or park the car on road side.
Shopping Malls are a Drain on Resources Shopping malls incorporates a largenumber of products and services inside them. It is not always easy to go to a shopping
mall and exit with only what you came to purchase. The temptation to browse is
always present, and browsing often leads to buying things that are not needed.
Keeping to a monthly budget becomes increasingly difficult every time you visit the
mall.
Sometimes customers face security problem in shopping malls. Pickpocket is acommon problem of low socio-economic class shopping malls.
Now Dhaka becomes a city of shopping malls. Shopping malls are here & there onthe road and this creates a deep effect on young generations. They can see many new
products and ask for that to their parents though their parents are not those much
well-off to buy those. These effects on family bonding.
