    1. Shopping Mall :A shopping mall, shopping Centre, shopping arcade, shopping precinct or simply mall is one or

more buildings forming a complex of shops representing merchandisers, with interconnectingwalkways enabling visitors to easily walk from unit to unit, along with a security, food shop,

wash room, parking areaa modern, indoor version of the traditional marketplace. A shopping

mall is a building or group of buildings that contains stores Shopping malls can be built in an

    enclosed or open-air format also.

From early on, the design tended to be inward-facing, with malls following theories of how

customers could best be enticed in a controlled environment. Similar, the concept of a mall

having one or more "anchor" or "big box" stores was pioneered early, with individual stores or

smaller-scale chain stores intended to benefit from the shoppers attracted by the big stores. In

Bangladesh shopping mall built in 1955 named New Market but it took time to be popular.

    2. History of Shopping Mall in Dhaka City :

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is an early shopping mall dating from the 15th century. In 1819,London opened a shopping center called the Burlington Arcade. Milan, Italy built a shopping

center in the 1860s called the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.In the United States, people beganmoving to the suburbs during the 20th century. The Oxford Covered Market in Oxford, England

opened in 1774 and still runs today.

This trend of shopping mall flows to this Asian subcontinent in 1950s and this also flows to our

country Bangladesh. The first shopping mall of our country is called New Market.New

Market () situated north of Azimpur, Dhaka. The constraction began in 1952 by C&BDept. on 35 acres (140,000 s.m) of land during the period of Mr. Nurul Amin, the Chief Minister

of East Pakistan. Market was completed in 1954. Mr. Nurul Amin was also active in establishing

the first posh Hotel Shahbagh at Shahbagh area (now PG Hospital). This heralded the beginningof a new area of development towards modernizing Dhaka. Rickshaw ride or walking along the

narrow lanes of old Dhaka for shopping was not a happy experience for families. Old Dhaka was

too conservative, noisy and crowded. Ironically, Mr. Nurul Amins modernization projectboomeranged as people talked against it. Some believed New Market and Shahbagh Hotel were

made exclusively for Nurul Amins family. The rumor gave credence to common people, so

much so that in the general election of 1954, Muslim League was routed in East Pakistan by the

United Front of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq and MaulanaBhasani. Mr. Nurul Amin lost in election miserably against a less known student leader, losing

the deposit money. Though New Market was not famous at that time but day by day it became

famous because of all shopping facilities than other single shop.

After 1997 shopping became easy & popular specially to women. In 2000 that trend got so muchpopularity that many shopping malls build in Dhaka city.

Actually these shopping malls are not worthy to call shopping mall and not equal to high &

middle class shopping malls. But people go there and these are part of Dhaka city also. These
