Let’s Meet some Reptiles

The American Crocodile• Length-about 15 feet long • Diet- crabs, fish, raccoons,

and waterbirds• Habitat-sometimes found

in the ocean, but young ones prefer to stay in fresh water

The Leopard Lizard• This agile lizard is

active during the day. It darts from bush to bush in search of insects or lies hidden in the shade awaiting unwary prey. It frequently eats smaller lizards.

• Leopard lizards can radically change their color from pale gray with dark spots to deep chocolate brown. The change can take place in just a couple of minutes.

The Mediterranean Gecko• This lizard is native to

parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia, but has spread all over the world when humans accidentally carried it along with cargo in ships

• These lizards are also called House Geckos. You can see them around the lights at night where they can capture insects

• The diamondback is active late in the day and at night during hot summer months

• It eats rabbits, rodents and birds

• They will stand their ground if disturbed

• The Snapper is the largest turtle

• It is nearly always in water, hiding in the muck, under stumps in deep pools

• They eat insects, fish, frogs, snakes, birds, muskrats, and many kinds of plants

The Desert Tortoise• They live in the hottest

driest parts of North America

• They avoid the heat by napping in its cool burrow

• They get all of their water through the plants they eat

• One thing a frightened tortoise will sometimes do is to release a flood of foul-smelling liquid when it is lifted off of the ground
