W H Y A R E H A S H T A G SS O I M P O R T A N T ?Hashtags are the only, only, only, onlyway to reach new people and get moreleads on a large scale without paying forads, period. I actually am really proud tosay that I grew my business to amultiple six figure business without everusing an ad. I did completely organic.And the reason I did that I did it onpurpose was because I wanted to proveto myself and to all of you that this shitthat I constantly preach actually works. I do strongly believe that once youmaster hashtags and organicmarketing, using money and learningabout paid traffic is very valuable. But Idon't think you should ever stop usinghashtags and hashtag strategies, nomatter how much money you have,because you're always going to getmore reach when you use both. For now, I'm going to encourage you tojust learn and experiment with organictraffic and hashtags.

Here's the thing about hashtags.They've remained a constant driver oftraffic since they were introduced toInstagram and throughout all of thechanges on Instagram. Hashtags haveactually remained a constant and havenot changed. They still are the numberone way to grow your profileorganically today. So, if you don't wantto pay for ads or learn how to do ads orfuck with ads, this is literally the onlyway to grow your profile. That’s why this is such an importantmodule. That's why the Hashtag FilesSociety is such a valuable resource andwhy we've spent thousands of dollarsand hours building out our librarybecause that's how importanthashtags are. There’s a lot ofinformation and misinformation abouthashtags and if they work or not. comments. Instagram's very cut anddry about what they allow and whatthey don't allow. Next photo, I decided to put thosehashtags in the actual caption of myIGTV and the last photo is exed outbecause we do not recommendhashtags in your bio on your profile, andhere's why. You're only allowed like 165characters, and it's better to have areally good Instagram name, or handle,and a really good Instagram headline. So my name is @thecourtneysjoberg,you can see on there and my headline,it says Instagram hashtag queen. If yougo back to the profile optimization, I willtalk about headlines. Having thoseoptimized is worth way more than ahashtag in your bio. A lot of times thehashtag in your bio just takes awayfrom the already limited amount ofspace you have to captivate youraudience in 30 seconds or less in yourbio. So I don't recommend usinghashtags in your bio.

There are four types of profiles that youcan have on Instagram. You can have apersonal private profile, a personalpublic profile, a business profile, and acreator profile. The most importantthing I need you to know is that if yourprofile is private, hashtags will not workat all. The reason we're using hashtags iscause we're trying to attract new peopleto our profile and we're trying to getnew leads and we're trying to makemore sales and try to grow our business.If you have a private profile, that's notgoing to happen. It's really importantthat you go back to the profileoptimization module to figure out whatkind of profile you should pick for yourbusiness type. And that you shouldhave a business profile or creator profile.It's really important for you to check ona regular basis to make sure your profileis public. The best way to do that is go

(Use your browser not theapp) and as soon as you go there, if yousee the blue follow button, when you goto your profile and you see all of yourphotos, it means you're public. If yourphotos are hidden and it has a request,it means you're private. Another keyindicator that you have a private profileand you need to switch is if you'reconstantly getting friend requests onInstagram, if you have a public profile,people don't request you. They can justfollow you whenever they want.

Instagram rules are very cut and dry,and they state that you can use 30hashtags in your feed and on yourInstagram TV videos. You may also useup to 10 hashtags in your stories. Now,I'm always going to recommend thatyou use 30 hashtags on your feed andon your IGTV.

Each hashtag is an opportunity toconnect with your ideal dream client.When used properly and when you dothis training, the other trainings,educate yourself, and you use reallygood hashtags from inside of our library,your chances of connecting with peopleand making more sales and growingyour business go through the roof.

I'm going to talk about it a little bit later,but stats wise, if you use one hashtag,your engagement goes up by 12% onaverage. If you use 30 it goes up by400%.

Another myth online is that using “toomany hashtags” can hurt your growth. This is not true unless you're using toomany bad hashtags, but you're aHashtag Files Society member if you'rereading this, which means you have

The best way you can describe this is ifyou were to go to a network marketingevent. Let's say there was 30 people,plus you, and every single person wasyour absolute perfect, dreamy idealclient, and you had the opportunity totalk to them and you have the time totalk to all of them, but you chose toignore half of them...that's literally amissed opportunity. That's whathappens when you don't use all 30hashtags. We need to be using all 30every single time and using thestrategies that I teach inside thismodule so that we can get the mostbang for our buck, pump out ourcontent to the internet world, andconnect with our ideal clients. That'swhat we're trying to do here.

when you make a story that's threeplus slides long. Let's say you're talkingabout a freebie that you want them todownload and/or a product that you'reselling. You're allowed to make 15-second-long videos, so you make threeof them. Let's say in the third video youpitch or you tell them, you can get thisfreebie or you can buy this bracelet bygoing to the link in my bio. But whenyou use hashtags on all three of themand you go to the hashtag for the story,all of a sudden, the only one that'sshowing up is the middle slide. The onethat doesn't have any information ofwhere they can find it. This is theproblem with using hashtags on storiesbecause there's so many people usinghashtags. The algorithm is even morestrict with choosing what goes into thehashtag story. What you want to do is you want tomake sure that if you're going to use ahashtag on a story that you use onlyone slide. If you can't fit everything thatyou need to say into one 15 secondvideo, basically what I'm trying to say is

I talked about how you can use up to10. Even though you can use up to 10there's one really specific strategy that Irecommend when making stories. So basically, how I like to put this is

don't use hashtags because you don'twant the first 15 seconds or the middle15 seconds to be the only story thatshows up, and then it doesn't makesense to the viewer on the story. So ifyou can fit it into one 15 second slideand then put up to 10 hashtags on it,that's a better strategy. Rather thanhaving random stories show up and itnot making sense to the user.

hole? What's banned? If you're stickingto the hashtags inside of the hashtagfiles society you won’t have to worryabout these. Now, if you go and decideto use hashtags that are not in theHashtag Files Society, you can hurt yourgrowth and you can hurt your profile.You want to make sure that you payattention to what I'm about to tell youso that you know.

There's four main categories ofhashtags, and I'm going to tell you allabout all of them, and these are myown names that I came up with to helpyou remember, but there are: Saharadesert hashtags, black hole hashtags,good for growth hashtags, and bannedhashtags. When implementing yourhashtag strategies, you want to only usegood for growth hashtags, which are allthe hashtags inside the Hashtag FilesSociety. What's the Sahara desert? What's black

I call them Sahara desert hashtagsbecause they're dry as a desert and theywill not lead to any traction on yourposts, stories or IGTV. They're so dry andnobody's there. There's not a lot of people in the middleof the Sahara desert. They're not goodfor growth because nobody's there. Sonobody's going to be seeing thatcontent. When you use these hashtags,they're not necessarily going to hurtyour growth, but they will slow it way,way down.

to worry about that. That's the benefit ofbeing a member.

These hashtags are a little more tricky.These are bigger than 500,000. One ofthe biggest myths on Instagram is thathashtags with millions of uses can getmillions of eyes on your stuff. That'sactually a myth. All that number meansis how many times that hashtag hasbeen used. What happens withblackhole hashtags is that they're soover-saturated and they've been used somuch that you literally never have achance to be seen, and you getswallowed into the blackhole ofInstagram, which like any black hole thatexists, it’s not a good place to be. Thesehashtags are also high risk becausethey're often being used by Instagramaccounts that participate in scam, spam,or porn, and are just a few posts awayfrom being shut down by Instagram. Sowhen you use these hashtags they willhurt your growth and could potentiallyhurt your profile if they become banned. Again, these do not exist inside theHashtag Files Society, so you don't have

These hashtags have actually been shutoff by Instagram, and they're againstInstagram's terms of service and theirterms of use. This is the most dangerousand lethal hashtag that you can use,because the myth is that all bannedhashtags are “X-rated”. So yes, boobs,ass, penis, insert whatever profane wordor inappropriate word here, they are allbanned, but so are beauty blogger,Snapchat, and more seeminglyinnocent hashtags. The reason that banned hashtags are soimportant to stay away from is becauseit's Instagram's way to keep the feedclean. Even if you accidentally use one ofthese bad hashtags, it can ruin youraccount. Again, Instagram is very cutand dry about what they allow andwhat they don't allow. They make it veryclear of what a banned hashtag is andwhat it isn't. perform at all because I don't know howhashtags work on all the other platformsbecause Instagram is my jam. I do knowthough, that hashtags on Facebook isnot a good strategy for growth, and Idefinitely don't recommend it.

2. Then you're going to craft your idealdream client pain points around thatproduct or service that's coming up forsale. 3. Create a caption that converts. 4. Pair it with a photo that pops 5. Post it with hashtags right away

Make sure you do all those things firstand at the best “time” of the day, likeactual physical time of the day, like one1:00 or 3:00 is all dependent on whenyour ideal dream client is actuallyactive online. That means go back tothe ideal client module if you haven'tdone that already, and figure out:when are they available? When arethey scrolling Instagram? That's whenyou should be posting.

How I do this is: 1. Decide what you're going to sell. Askyourself What am I selling? What'scoming up? What promotions, whatlaunches, whatever am I selling is, ornew products? Are there newservices?

Number one, you'll never use anythingbut a good for growth hashtag as amember of the Hashtag Files Society.We have literally spent hundreds ofthousands of hours. At this point wecalculated at or over 3000 hoursbuilding up the library that we have.Every month we spend over a hundredhours combing through all of ourhashtags to make sure they're still goodfor growth.

If you don't see a hashtag category thatyou want to use, you can make arequest and we will do some researchfor you.

Each month on the first of the monthwe wipe your old lists clean. I wouldrecommend making your lists at thebeginning of the month because wewipe all the lists clean on the first day ofthe month. The reason we wipe all thelists clean is because on the first of themonth, we're also taking out hashtags

that are no longer good for growth. Wedon't want these to be on your list. So ifyou ever see your list disappear on thefirst of the month,  it's because wedon't want to chance you accidentallyusing a bad hashtag.

There literally is no other hashtagservice on the internet like the HashtagFiles Society because our hashtags,they're not generated by bots orprograms like Tailwind and all theseother hashtag “generators.” They're justa bunch of bots finding you hashtags.Our hashtags, all 24,000+ of them,have been handpicked by my teamand I. That's the biggest differencebetween us, because all the otherinternet hashtag generators that existout there with lots of differenthashtags are all generated by bots.

Something to remember is you need tomake sure you put your request in beforethe 12th of each month. That gives us alittle bit over two weeks to make surewe're getting your hashtag so we haveenough time to do the research. Forexample, if you put your request inFebruary 12th, on March 1st your categorywill be in there. If you put a request in onFebruary 13th. Your hashtag will not be inthere until April 1st. You really want tomake sure you pay attention to the dates.Also something to note when you'remaking a request. Make sure you payattention to your email because we mayemail you back after you put in a requestasking for more clarification on what youwere looking for so we can make sure weget it right. Before you put in a request though, makesure to research our current categoriesand see what we do have and if you wantmore hashtags in a category that wealready have, you can request that. If youwould like a new category, just read thisfirst and then request hashtags based onthe information you're learning. Because

there's a lot of categories that we getrequests for sometimes that are literallycategories that don't exist. We have to bereally thinking strategically when usinghashtags and there are some categoriesof hashtags that just do not perform well,and I'm not going to give you a hashtagjust to give you a hashtag.

If it's not a good for growth hashtag I'mnot going to give it to you.

There was a study done in 2017 so overthree years ago, they found over 100,000banned hashtags. Now, this was threeyears ago. If I was to make an educatedguess, I would say there's literallyprobably at least a million bannedhashtags in 2020 so I'm saying thisbecause if you choose to use hashtagsthat are not inside of our library, which Ido not recommend, make sure that youhave a separate list that says, hashtagsnot from the Hashtag Files Society sothat you know to check them everysingle month and make sure that they'renot banned and make sure they're notblackhole hashtags cause we don't wantto get you in trouble. The most frustrating thing that we see inthe Hashtag Files Society is we will getpeople say, “Oh my hashtags aren'tworking.” And then I'll say, “what's yourprofile?” And then they'll give me theirprofile and then I'll go to their profile andI'll see their last four posts. I find theyeither used a banned hashtag or they've 

been using hashtags that are in themillions that have nothing to do withthe Hashtag Files Society hashtags. Well,no wonder they're not performingbecause they didn't use what we toldthem to use. Please just be aware ofthat. Because I can't guarantee aproduct that's not mine. If you're usinghashtags that are not inside theHashtag Files Society, I definitely can'tguarantee them. Plus if you're notimplementing the training that goesalong with the hashtags, I definitely can'trecommend and stand behind them. Next, using at least one hashtagincreases your engagement by 12.6%but using 30 hashtags can increase yourengagement by up to 400% which iswhy we want to use 30 every singletime. Hashtags are the only way to reachmassive amounts of people besidespaying for ads.

Note, these are not questions to beasked every single time, I recommend 1-4 times a year going over these.

STEP 2 : COREHASHTAGS

Core hashtags are 10 hashtags thatrelate to your business that can bethreaded throughout your lists, eitherweekly or monthly, depending on howoften you create your new list. These hashtags will directly relate backto your business type in what you do. Sofor example, if you're a local business, thisis where you would use all localhashtags. So if you're a Portland, Oregonhairstylist your core hashtags would belocal Portland, Oregon hashtags,because you're not going to be doinghair on people who live in Eugene,Oregon.

When you use your core hashtags thatrelate directly to your business, they'regoing to be on every list. So that we canmake sure that we're really getting intothe meat and potatoes of where our idealclients are hanging out. For localbusinesses, this is really important You should only be using 10 to 30 of theseper month in your lists, depending onhow often you are making your lists.

STEP 3 : CONTENTHASHTAGSContent hashtags are 20 hashtags thatrelate to the content you're creatingspecifically for that post. So 10 corehashtags plus 20 content hashtags equal30 hashtags, which is the magic number.This is where the bulk amount ofhashtags you are using should comefrom, and these hashtags will directlyrelate to the content you're speakingabout in that post. Sometimes that can be the same as yourcore hashtags. So like for me, a lot oftimes my core hashtags don't tend to go

too far off from my content hashtags. Butgoing back to the local hairstyle business,her core hashtags would be Portland,Oregon, but her content hashtags wouldbe about the hair. It would be whatever hairstyle or haircolor or whatever updo, loose curls,whatever type of hair stuff, plus the corehashtags. When it comes to contenthashtags, this is when we're going towant to use a lot of hashtags. Honestly,you should on average be using like 300hashtags per month, and the bulk ofthese will be coming from the content,and you should always be using 160hashtags to 400 of these in your listseach month. The best organic hashtag strategy useslots and lots and lots of hashtags eachand every month. The reason we want touse a lot of hashtags is number one,every hashtag is an opportunity. Youknow Sally from South Dakota who postsin that same Facebook group 10 times aday and it's so annoying. You don't wantto be that in a hashtag. Hashtags are

Instagram's version of Facebook groups.You want to go and hang out in differentgroups and mingle with different peopleand have opportunities to connect withdifferent groups of people. That's why wewant to use lots of different hashtags. Number two, when you use too many ofthe same hashtag you get flagged. One ofthe biggest mistakes I see is people makea list of 30 hashtags, a list of 60 hashtags, alist of 90 hashtags, and they use that forsix months. What happens is they get

put in instagram jail.  Instagram will shutyou off from commenting. That's whathappens when you use the samehashtags too much. So we want toswitch them up so we don't lookspammy and we don't get in trouble. How many hashtags should yourealistically be using each month? So Imade this little chart so you can kind ofstart to understand how many hashtagsfor your business.

1. Click on “Create My Hashtag List!” onthe main dashboard (you can also gethere by clicking on the Hashtag buttonthe left hand side of the website

2. Select 10 hashtags that you want touse as your core hashtags.

3. If you are making enough lists for 1week, select 80 content hashtags

4. Click “I’m ready! Go to the next step!”

5. Here you will drag and drop yourhashtags from the left hand side intothe columns on the right

HOW TO MAKE A L ISTUSING THE TOOLINSIDE YOURMEMBERSHIP

This process takes about 10-20 minuteseach month, depending on how manylists you’re creating.

6. Once your lists have been created +named, click “I’m ready! Go to the nextstep!”

7. Now you can copy, save, and exportyour lists to use on Instagram (your core+ content hashtags will be randomizedwhen you make your lists)

SHOULD I REUSEHASHTAGS/HASHTAGLISTS?The short answer is maybe/no. The longanswer is if you spread them out andyou don't use them too close together,you should be okay as long as you'recareful. Basically, if you're not going totake the time to spread them out and bereally careful, no. If you are going to be careful and you'regoing to spread them out so you don'tget marked as spam and you use onlyHashtag Files Society hashtags, maybe

yes, you could try it. But I definitely thinkthe less you reuse them, the better. But ifyou do reuse them but don’t use it againfor two weeks, that's definitely okay. Ifyou're trying to use the same list toomany times in one week, it can bemarked as spam and not as effective.

HOW DO I SEE MYHASHTAGPERFORMANCE?

But before you get freaked out, I want tolet you know what else really mattersbesides the hashtag numbers. Are yougetting likes? Are you gettingcomments? Are you getting shares? Areyou getting saves? Hashtags shouldn'tbe the only way you rate if a post didwell. To me, personally, what matters isam I making sales? Is my email listgrowing and what is my engagementpercentage? But you can use theengagement calculator inside themembership, but definitely, look overthese numbers and get a general idea ofwhat they mean.

You will then be able to see the likes,comments, shares, saves, interactions,profile visits, website clicks, and then youcan scroll down and see where it saysfrom hashtags, so 67% of people whoengaged with this post are followingyou. So really, really great. This is just aneasy way for you to see where thehashtags worked on this post.

Because here's the deal, you're going tohave posts that tank and don't performwell. I don't want you to get caught up inthe numbers. There are going to betimes where you use the best of the besthashtags because you're a Hashtag FilesSociety member and you get 1%. Buthere's the deal. Even 1% is morediscovery from hashtags than zero. Youwant to focus on what's going well anddon't be afraid to pivot. If you're ever feeling discouraged thathashtags aren't working, my numberone tip for this is to post for an entireweek using zero hashtags. Then postagain for the next week using HashtagFiles Society hashtags and compare thestats and your stats from using hashtags.It'll blow, when you didn't use hashtags,out of the water. Be aware that there are going to betimes it doesn't work as good as youwant it to work, but it doesn't mean thatit's not working.

Don't be afraid to experiment withhashtags. If you feel called to use it in the library,try it. Hashtags aren't the only reason yourpost might not be performing well.Remember, it can be your photosand your captions specifically.
