Definition of RESEARCH

• In the broadest sense of the word, the definition of research includes any gathering

of data, information, opinions and facts for the advancement of knowledge

Quantitative Research

• This is used to quantify the problem by way of generating numerical data or data that can be transformed into useable statistics. It uses measurable data to formulate facts. There are different quantitative data collection methods like online polls, surveys, questionnaires and face to face interviews.

Qualitative Research

• It is used to gain an understanding of underling reasons, opinions and motivations. It is also used to uncover trends in thoughts and opinions. There are common methods like focus groups (group discussions), individual interviews and participation/observations.

Types of research methods

• Observational research: Many types of studies like case studies which could be defined as observational research. It shares a primarily characteristic which is being recorded and observed.

• Advantages: It is in depth as it is a detailed report. It is also strong on validity and it is good for explaining meaning and context

• Disadvantages: It could be viewed as subjective. It is also a long process and it cant be applied to everyone. There are also practical issues as there is need for consent and it may not even be accurate.

Types of research methods:

• Quasi-Experiments: They are very similar to true experiments but use naturally formed or pre-existing groups. It may result from studying the differences between naturally formed groups.

• Advantages: Can simulate an experiment in a class room setting.

• Disadvantages: Can involve other factors that might effect the experiment.

• The main outcome for exploring my target audience is to gain more information, data

and opinions which can help me support my decision in deciding which target audience to

choose.
