This tutorial has been set
up for the purpose of
helping people research
city records at the Kane
County Recorder’s
Website.
Begin by navigating to:
http://www.kanecountyrecorder.net
You should end up at the page
shown on the next slide
Click “Land Records Search”
This will bring
you to the
page shown
on the next
slide
First Search
through the older
records
(1837 to 1982)
by clicking
“Tract Books”
We will now go through an
example of researching a
section of land
Therefore you will
concentrate on the lower
half of the webpage as
shown on the next slide
Click through the choices at the bottom for
the township (Geneva), section
number, and quarter section you are
researching. Then click the first page in the
last column. This will immediately take you
to a track book page similar to the one
shown on the next slide
The next slide shows a
view of this same page
with a zoomed view
On this page you can see an
entry for the city of Geneva
as Grantee for this parcel.
(The document type is a
QCD or quit claim deed)
By reading across this
row, you can determine the
document
number, book/page
number, grantor, grantee, do
cument type, date of
document, date of
recording, and description
summary
You can transcribe this
information and place the
URL into your database
We will now go through an
example of researching a
subdivision
Therefore you will
concentrate on the upper
half of the webpage as
shown on the next slide
Click through the choices at the top for the
town (Geneva), subdivision, and block
number (if applicable) that you are
researching. Then click the first page in the
last column. This will immediately take you
to a track book page similar to the one
shown on the next slide
The next slide shows a
view of this same page
with a zoomed view

entry for the city of Geneva
as Grantee for this parcel.

easement)
By reading across this
row, you can determine the
document
number, book/page
number, grantor, grantee, do
cument type, date of
document, date of
recording, lots, and
description summary
Now, we will search for
sections of land with
documents dated between
1982 and the present
In the left
sidebar, click
“Advanced”
This brings up a
page like the one on
the next slide
Let’s search first for the
grantor in the section of land
we are researching
We are looking for
The city of Geneva as
a grantor
And we are looking at
Section 3 Township
39 Range 8, the NE
quarter section
Once you have input your
search parameters, click
“Search” at the top of the
page.
This will take you to the
results of your search. The
page will be similar to that
on the next sheet.
Although you can see a lot of the
document info here, you can also
click the paperclip to bring up the
actual document. The URL to be
placed in the database is the URL
of the actual document.
You should also go back and follow
through these same steps looking
for the city as the grantee
Now we will search the newer
records (between the years
1982 and the present) for
records in a subdivision.
Go back to the “Advanced”
choice in the menu at the left.
This will bring you to a page
similar to that on the next slide
Let’s search first for the
grantor in the section of land
we are researching
We are looking for
The city of Geneva as
a grantee
And we are looking at
Westhaven
Subdivision
Note: to get the subdivision
code, see the next slide
To find the subdivision code to
be used as the search
parameter, click “Lookup
Subdivision Codes” under the
box where you input the code.
This brings up a window shown on the
next slide where you can search for your
subdivision and find the code
Once you have all your
search parameters in
place, click “Search” at the
top of the page. This will
bring up a page similar to
that shown on the next slide.
Although you can see a lot of
the document info here, you
can also click the paperclip to
bring up the actual document. A
sample document is shown on
the next slide. The URL to be
placed in the database is the
URL of the actual document.
You should also go back and
follow through these same
steps looking for the city as
grantor
