E’ un interessante matrimonio quello che accoglie l’ospite sotto il portico del Grand di Kolkata. Lo stile neoclassico è chiaramente identi!cabile anche se stemperato da dettagli,

aggiunte, decorazioni che lo legano alla tradizione costruttiva e artistica indiana. Certo il contrasto è notevole. Il quartiere dove sorge è centrale, la storia qui ha lasciato numerose testimonianze dimenticandosi però di curarle. Le aggiunte successive ne hanno sepolto il fascino sacri!candolo all’utilità. Per questo oggi entrare all’hotel è come varcare le porte del paradiso, lasciando fuori una realtà non proprio idilliaca.

L’hotel è nato nel 1894 quando un giovane armeno, Arathoon Stephen, comprò l’allora Theatre Royal che presto fu distrutto da un incendio. Da quelle ceneri nacque il Grand Hotel da subito sinonimo di modernità per l’elettricità, l’ascensore idraulico e altri lussi tecnologici. Oggi il concetto di lusso si è evoluto e il Grand anche. Il fascino è rimasto a testimoniare un’epoca ma molto è cambiato per accogliere i viaggiatori contemporanei. Ecco quindi, tra gli altri, il wi-! in tutta la proprietà, l’attrezzata palestra e l’ottima Oberoi Spa.

Tra i ristoranti il Baan Thai è il !ne dining ma allo stesso tempo quello che o"re una esperienza di originale cucina thailandese. L’arredo in teak con intagli dorati danno l’atmosfera giusta per gustarne l’ottima cucina. Necessario suggello a un soggiorno ricco di fascino e ispirazione.

The mix that welcomes guest under the portico of the Oberoi Grand in Calcutta is an interesting one. The neoclassical style is clearly identi!able even though

altered somewhat by details, additions and decorations which link it to the Indian building and artistic tradition. Of course, the contrast is noteworthy. The hotel is centrally located and numerous historical traces have been left – even though they have not been exceptionally maintained. Successive additions have buried the fascination, sacri!cing it for functionality. Hence when guest enter the hotel today they encounter paradise, leaving outside a reality which is less the idyllic.

The hotel originated in 1894 when an Armenian youth, Arathoon Stephen, bought the then Theatre Royal which was soon destroyed by a fire. From the ashes came the Grand Hotel, immediately synonymous with modernity and its electricity, hydraulic lifts and other technological luxuries. Today the concept of luxury has evolved and the Grand as well. The fascination has remained to testify to an epoch but has changed to welcome contemporary travellers. Here then, we find wi-fi throughout the property, a well-equipped gym and the superb Oberoi Spa.

Among the restaurants, the Baan Thai is for fine dining and the experience of original Thai cuisine. The furnishings in teak with gilded inlays give the perfect atmosphere in which to experience superb cuisine – a must for a holiday of fascination and inspiration.

Il poeta inglese Sir Edwin Arnold scriveva “Not a piece of architecture, as other buildings are, but the proud passions of an emperor’s love wrought in living stones”. E’ solo una delle suggestive descrizioni di questo monumento. Dal bar del resort un’ampia vetrata ne inquadra la sagoma. Mentre l’attento cameriere ci serve il cappuccino con deliziosi biscotti opera del pastry chef, lo sguardo non smette di indagare ogni aspetto dell’edifico.

This is only one of the impressive descriptions of this monument. From the bar of the resort a large window frames this marvel. While the attentive waiter serves us a cappuccino with delicious biscuits - the art of the pastry chef – the eye does not stop scrutinising every aspect of the edi!ce.



Anche la cucina dell’Esphahân, il ristorante indiano, celebra la tradizione culinaria indiana in un ambiente arricchito da pietra arenaria rossa e marmo greco. Indulgere alle tentazioni è d’obbligo, basta poi visitare il gymnasium e la sua spa per bilanciare qualche eccesso. Qui una delle esperienze più esaltanti è il Noor-E-Taj Romance, un ritual di tre ore a base di melograno con scrub, wrap, massaggio e bagno rituale finale. Una esperienza reale desunta dalle tradizioni aristocratiche Moghul.

The food at the Esphahan, the Indian restaurant, also celebrates the Indian culinary tradition in a setting enhanced by red sandstone and Greek marble. Indulging one’s temptations is obligatory – of course, only if you visit the spa and gym afterwards to balance all excess. Here one of the most exhilarating experiences is the Noor-E-Taj Romance, a three-hour ritual using pomegranate for a scrub, wrap, massage and a concluding bath - a royal experience taken from the aristocratic Moghul tradition.

I l resort si sviluppa in orizzontale e appare solo dopo aver attraversato la hall. In effetti il check-in si fa in camera quindi in un attimo si arriva ai padiglioni o

alle tende. Infatti un’area del giardino ospita le suite in tenda. Affascinanti unità con giardino privato e terrazza ma coperte da vere e proprie tende che assicurano comunque confort e privacy. L’arredo è vagamente coloniale ed esotico regalando un tocco di fascino in più. Il contrasto con il mondo esterno è fortissimo, come in molte città dell’India. Ma questo è il Paese.

at their pavilions or tents. The tented suites are, in e"ect, located in an area of the garden. The units are fascinating and boast private gardens and terraces but are indeed covered by veritable tents which still ensure comfort and privacy. Furnishings are vaguely colonial and exotic, o"ering an extra touch of charm. The contrast with the outside world is very strong - as in many cities in India. But this is the country.

Ma anche per fare un picnic a dorso d’elefante o più semplicemente per assistere a una dimostrazione culinaria dello chef. Spezie, yogurt e tanti altri ingredienti combinati a formare i celebri piatti della cucina indiana. Le attività in questo forte sono varie. Anche chi già conosce the pink city non si annoierà.

La spa è ricavata in una tipica haveli restaurata, una residenza signorile che risale a oltre due secoli fa. Qui si trova il gymnasium, il bagno turco e le stanze per i trattamenti. Proprio di fronte è la piscina attorniata da curiosi padiglioni in stile Rajasthani. Il ristorante principale, il Surya Mahal, è nel forte e nella pianta ricorda la sala del trono della residenza del Maharaja.

At the Rajvilas in Jaipur guests can return to see the City Palace and the Amber Fort – but also have a picnic on elephant-back or simply attend a cooking demonstration by the chef. Spices, yogurt and many other ingredients are combined to make the famous dishes of Indian cuisine. The activities at this fort are varied. Even those who know the “pink” city will not be bored.

The spa is located in the typical restored haveli, a stately residence which dates back more than two centuries. Here guests !nd the gym, the Turkish bath and the treatment rooms – right in front of the swimming pool surrounded by pavilions in Rajasthani style. The main restaurant, the Surya Mahal, is in the fort, and its $oor plan is reminiscent of the throne room of the Maharaja residences.

offering an extra touch of charm.

L’immacolato marmo bianco greco accoglie l’ospite nella lobby al primo piano. Una immensa vetrata si apre sul golfo, mentre in alto lo sguardo scorre i vari piani !no

al so#tto a vetrate. E’ uno spazio immerso nella luce, dove campeggia un pianoforte a coda rosso fuoco che catalizza l’attenzione. Il check-in per le suite avviene in camera, in modo da assaporare subito la vista che a qualsiasi ora del giorno è oltremodo gradevole. Lo skyline di Mumbai fa da cornice a una passeggiata che è molto popolare dal tempo dei coloni inglesi.

Un hotel prettamente internazionale ma con una anima indiana. L’ottimo design è arricchito dai colori dei sari, delle spezie, dei curry e delle strade di questa eterogenea terra. Così come è prettamente indiana la cucina servita allo Ziya, il ristorante dello chef pluristellato Vineet Bhatia. Vera cucina della tradizione indiana che non indulge a contaminazioni fusion ma che ripropone ingredienti e sapori “sacri” per gli indiani. Ma allo stesso tempo contemporanea in tema di presentazione, leggerezza, quantità. E’ una esperienza unica vedersi servire queste ra#nate composizioni cubiste. Decisamente uno dei must di quella che a lungo fu la “porta dell’India”.

The immaculate white Greek marble welcomes guests in the lobby on the first floor. An immense window opens on to the gulf, while above the eye follows the various floors up to the

glass ceiling. This is a space flooded in light, where a fire-red grand piano captures our attention. The check-in for the suites takes place in the rooms so that guest can immediately enjoy the view which is extremely pleasant at any moment of the day. The skyline of Mumbai is the setting for a promenade which has been popular since the time of the English colonists.

The Oberoi Grand is primarily International but has an Indian soul. The superb design is enhanced with the colours of saris, spices, curries and the streets of this heterogeneous land. The cuisine served at Ziya, the restaurant managed by the award-winning chef Vineet Bhatia, is also mostly Indian. It does not indulge fusion contamination but proposes ingredients and $avours that are sacred for the Indians. At the same time, however, it is contemporary with respect to presentation, lightness and quantity. It is a unique experience to !nd re!ned cubist compositions – decidedly a must of that which was long held as the “doorway to India”.
