09/26—Tour of the Hamptoms The Tour begins in Southampton and travels through mostly flat terrain and rolling hills on the south fork of Long Island, passing farmlands, beaches, mansions and historic towns such as East Hampton, Amagansett and Montauk before returning to Southampton. 25, 50, 69, 100 mile routes and two 25-mile Guided Rides. Starts at Southampton High School, 141 Narrow Lane, Southampton, New York 11968. Suggested Starting Times: 100-mile route, 7:30 a.m., 50 and 69-mile routes, 8 a.m., 25-mile route, 9:00 a.m. Guided Rides available, 9:00am and 11:30am. Support: SAG wagon, route sheets, road markings and rest stops with refreshments are provided for all routes. Helmets Required. 10/2—Bicycle Captree & Gilgo State Parks 10:00 am. This out and back ride is on flat ground along the ocean beach strip. The pace will be slow. Beginners welcome. We will take two breaks, one for a short educational discussion of the birds, flora and geological features of this ocean front environment and one longer break for a leg stretch and beverage. Be sure to bring something to drink and protection from the sun (sun screen, glasses, shirt, etc). Helmet must be worn. Rentals not available. 10/17—Hike Sunken Meadow State Park 1:30 PM. Explore the marine environments of this beautiful park. A naturalist will lead the hike and explain marine animals, birds, shells, plants and other points of interest along marsh and shore during the walk. The terrain is level, sandy, wet in some locations. The emphasis on the hike will be natural history education. Moderate pace. Adults and children 12+ are welcome. Approx. 2 hours. 10/23—West Meadow Beach & Preserve, Stony Brook Noon. Flat beach walk to the end of the spit overlooking Stony Brook Harbor where 3 tides converge. Return along the wetlands on a paved road closed to traffic. Approx 2 - 2.5 mi, 1.5 hrs. History of the cottages and some sea life facts will be shared as you walk. 11/6—Massapequa State Park 1:00 pm. 4 miles. This long, flat preserve is a pleasure at this time of year. 09/18—Peconic Rive, Riverhead Paddle 10:30 am. Paddle 8 mi along the river while observing many birds and the start of the fall colors. We will talk about the river’s history and its economic importance to the early residents of the area. Life jackets required. Bring food and a beverage. We may take a stop along the river. 10/16—Kayak Stony Brook Harbor, the Creeks and Smithtown Bay 11:30 am. We will start this 3 mile kayak on the creek, south of the Stony Brook Yacht Club. From there we will paddle through the channel with the outgoing tide to either Smithtown Bay or West Meadow Creek. If we go into the Bay we can stop at either Long Beach or West Meadow beach for a break to discuss this beautiful region and its historical value. Expect to spend 2-3 hours paddling and an additional half hour for the beach. Swim possible. Slow pace. Bring a beverage.
