1. Holy Week - On Friday we finished the Great Fast & now we have begun the very special Holy Week. If you have not kept the fast well, now is your extra chance for preparation before the "Feast of all Feasts," the Holy Resurrection. Clean your souls & bodies, put the oil of prayer on your face, share your talents and possessions with those in need and be ready to come forward to greet our Lord - Resurrected Jesus!

8. Blessing of the Easter Food - Blessing of the Pussy Willow and the Easter baskets will be done via LIVESTREAM, following the celebration of Resurrection Matins and Divine Liturgy. The blessing pronounced in our church will extend to the respective items in your homes. The prayer of blessing is the key element in these sacramental rituals. The faithful who have holy water in their homes may sprinkle it on these items while participating in the prayer via internet.

10. EASTER ATTIRE – we are asking all parishioners that have Ukrainian shirts to wear them to church on Easter Sunday. Many Ukrainians in other parishes wear Ukrainian shirts to church on Easter. We have started this beautiful tradition during Centennial year and will try to preserve it.

11. Ukrainian Catholic – while Ukrainian is in the title of our Church, one need not be ethnically Ukrainian to join our parish. The Ukrainian Catholic Church is a church that comes from the Ukrainian people, but is for the entire human race. We live out our Catholic faith according to the Byzantine Rite (our theology, liturgy, spirituality and canon law are non-Latin), while maintaining full Eucharistic communion with the Catholic Church in Rome. – (Fr. Act of Spiritual Communion Did you know? - that Catholics can make an Act of Spiritual Communion? It has long been a Catholic understanding that when circumstances prevent one from receiving Holy Communion, it is possible to make an Act of Spiritual Communion which is a source of grace. Spiritual Communion means uniting one’s self in prayer with Christ’s sacrifice and worshiping Him in His Body and Blood. The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when a person cannot attend Divine

Liturgy. Acts of Spiritual Communion increase our desire to receive sacramental Communion and help us avoid the sins that would make us unable to receive Holy Communion worthily. When unable to receive Holy Communion, pray the prayer below: My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

1. ВЕЛИКДЕНЬ У ВИШИТИХ СОРОЧКАХ – заохочуємо парафіян одягти сорочки-вишиванки та українські строї у світлий День Христового Воскресіння. Така традиція успішно

практикується у багатьох парафіях Америки, Канади та звичайно ж, України. Ми розпочали цю прекрасну традицію, як особливий знак святкування 100-літнього Ювілею нашої церкви та хотіли б її затримати в майбутньому.

2. Відвідини Хворих - не усі члени парохії можуть славити Бога разом із нами у Церкві, через недомагання, хворобу, чи перебування у старечому домі. Однак не так хвороба чи старість, а самотність та одинокість приносять їм страждання та смуток. Tелефонний дзвінок, чи сердечний лист матимуть цілющий ефект на їхнє життя. Отож

допомагаймо одні одним, приносячи плід любові.

3. Страстний Тиждень – присвячується співпережиттю останніх днів земного життя Господа Ісуса Христа, Його страждань на Хресті, смерті та погребіння, і з точністю відтворюються всі події цих днів. Через велич і важливість цих подій кожний день тижня іменується святим і великим. З апостольських часів і до тепер дні Страсного тижня віруючі проводять у суворому пості, усердній молитві та подвигах доброчинності й милосерді.

Memorandum of the Bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the United States of America Regarding Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Easter celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic

Dear beloved clergy, religious, and faithful! Christ is among us! In order to help curb the spread of the coronavirus the civil and health authorities in our country have extended the “Stay at Home Order” until the end of April 2020. Out of deep concern for the spiritual and physical well-being of all persons —we the bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in America urge you at this crucial time to enter more deeply into the very heart of our Christian faith while following the directives of civil authorities. We ask you to celebrate the great mysteries of our salvation in Christ’s Death and Resurrection at home. Together with you, we recognize the sacrifice we are all called to make by being physically distanced from the Holy Week and Pascha services in church and from one another. Trusting in the graces flowing from the celebration of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord, we remain mindful that paschal joy has its source in a personal encounter with the Risen Christ. What did it take for Mary Magdalene’s tears to give way to Easter joy? Nothing less than meeting the risen Christ! The Easter Gospel is not only about Christ’s passage from death to life, but also about the encounter Mary has with the Lord. Jesus meets us – calls us by name, opens our eyes, and invites us to see him and be with and in Him in the Resurrection. No matter where we are or what may be happening in our lives, precisely in the midst of a deathly crisis such as the present pandemic, we are called to spiritual joy through the love of God who conquers death by death and gives eternal life. We encourage you to participate as fully as you can in Holy Week and Pascha services by way of radio, television or live-streamed broadcasts. We encourage all the faithful to turn to the Church’s treasury of prayer, praying individually or as a family in the domestic church. Christ is truly among us! We request the clergy to continue Holy Week and Pascha services without the physical presence of the body of the faithful: 1. The faithful can participate in the celebration of Divine Liturgies and the Blessing of Willows and Easter Baskets via live-streamed services. The blessing pronounced in our churches will extend to the respective items in our homes. The prayer of blessing is the key element in these sacramental rituals. The faithful who have holy water in their homes may sprinkle it on these items while participating in the prayer via internet or by saying the prayers of blessing alone or together as a family or household. 2. The Great Friday Vespers with the placement of the Holy Shroud and Resurrection Matins services ought to take place within the church with no processions. The procession with the Holy Shroud can take place around the holy altar, and the opening rituals of Resurrection Matins can be conducted in front of the royal doors of the iconostasis instead of at the outside church doors. 3. The faithful can continue to approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession on an individual basis. Priests should indicate to parishioners when and where they are available for confessions maintaining the prescribed safe distance between priest and penitent. When confession is not possible, faithful are encouraged to make Acts of Perfect Contrition, when a penitent sincerely regrets his or her sins, not merely out of fear of God’s just punishment, but because of having offended our Loving Lord. This year, the canonical obligation of going to confession in the season of Easter can be fulfilled in the time period extending to the feast of Pentecost. Our beloved faithful, one day soon, an announcement will be made that we can celebrate the Divine Liturgy and other services all together again. We look forward to that joyous day. We will appreciate seeing each other more than ever, giving thanks for God’s gift of communion in the Church, the Body of Christ of which we are members! Our fervent prayer is that our Resurrected and Living Lord may bestow his peace and grace upon you and your loved ones, upon our community, our nation and the world! Please join us in praying for all who are suffering from the Coronavirus, for all health care workers and first responders, and for an easing of the anxiety and tension caused by this pandemic. Relying on the care of the Mother of God and the Mother of us all, we unite our sufferings to those of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and we place our hope and trust in His glorious Resurrection. Піклуючись про загальне добро, а також про фізичне та духовне здоров’я всіх людей, ми, єпископи Української Католицької Церкви в Америці, закликаємо вас у цей критичний час увійти глибше у суть нашої християнської віри, дотримуючись приписів органів державної влади. Ми просимо вас святкувати величні тайни нашого спасіння в Христовій смерті та воскресінні удома. Разом з вами визнаємо велику жертву, яку ми покликані пережити, не будучи фізично присутніми на богослуженнях Страсного тижня та Великодня, та віддалені одні від одних. Через благодать, яка випливає із споминання страстей, смерті та воскресіння нашого Господа, ми пам’ятаємо, що радість Воскресіння починається з особистої зустрічі з Воскреслим Господом. Що перемінило сльози Марії Магдалини на Великодню радість? Лише зустріч з воскреслим Христом! Тому, Великоднє Євангеліє є розповіддю не лише про нове життя, яке приходить після смерті, але також про зустріч Марії з Господом. Ісус Христос зустрічається з нами, - кличе кожного з нас по імені, відкриває наші очі та закликає нас побачити Його і бути з Ним у Воскресінні. Незважаючи де ми є або що відбувається в нашому житті, навіть серед смертельної кризи як теперішня пандемія, ми є покликані до духовної радості через Божу любов, яка долає смертю смерть і дає життя вічне. Ми заохочуємо вас якнайповніше брати участь у богослуженнях Страсного тижня та Великодня за допомогою радіо, телебачення або прямих трансляцій по Інтернету. Ми заохочуємо вас почернути з скарбниці молитви нашої Церкви, молячись індивідуально або родина в домашній церкві. Христос є направду серед нас! Ми просимо духовенство продовжувати служити богослуження під час Страсного тижня та Великодня без (фізичної) участі вірних: 1. Вірні можуть приймати участь у відправах Божественних Літургій та благословення верби та великодніх кошиків через пряму трансляцію відправ з церкви. Благословення промовлене у наших церквах буде включати вербу чи великодні кошики у наших домах. Молитва благословення є ключовим елементом під час освячення. Вірні, які мають освячену воду у своїх домівках, можуть покропити нею ці предмети, беручи участь у молитві через онлайн-трансляцію чи, навіть, промовляючи молитви разом, як сім’я. 2. Вечірня у Велику П’ятницю з виставленням Плащаниці та Воскресна Утреня повинні служитися у церкві без процесії. Обхід зі Святою Плащаницею може відбуватися навколо вівтаря, а також царські двері іконостасів можуть бути використані замість дверей до храму під час Воскресної Утрені. 3. Таїнство Покаяння / сповіді надалі буде доступне для віруючих індивідуально. Священики повинні вказати парафіянам, коли і де вони можуть уділяти Сповідь своїм вірним, дотримуючись безпечної відстані між священиком і каяником. У разі неможливо пруступити до сповіді, вірних проситься збудити досконалий жаль у собі та промовити Акт досконалого жалю за гріхи, де каянник щиро жаліє за свої гріхи, не з остраху перед Божим справедливим покаранням, а тому, що образив Люблячого Бога. Цього року обов’язок піти до сповіді під час великоднього періоду є продовженим до свята Зіслання Святого Духа. Дорогі вірні! Скоро одного дня буде оголошено, що ми всі разом знову публічно служитимемо Божественну Літургію та інші відправи. Ми з нетерпінням очікуємо цього дня, коли вітатимемо вас у церкві. Це буде радісний день, і ми усі будемо тішитися з нагоду зустрітися разом більше ніж коли-небудь скоріше, дякуючи за Божий дар сопричастя у Церкві, Христовому Тілі, якого ми є членами. Наша гаряча молитва лине сьогодні, щоб наш Воскреслий і Живий Господь дарував свій мир і благодать вам і вашим близьким, нашій спільноті, нашій державі і світові! Просимо приєднуватися до нас у молитві за всіх, хто страждає від коронавірусу, за всіх медичних працівників та волонтерів, а також за зменшення тривоги та напруги, викликаних цією пандемією. Віддаючись під материнську опіку Божої Матері і Матері нас усіх, єднаймо наші страждання з стражданнями Господа нашого Ісуса Христа, та покладімо нашу надію та віру у Його славне воскресіння. ПОСЛАННЯ БЛАЖЕННІШОГО СВЯТОСЛАВА

ДО МОЛОДІ НА КВІТНУ НЕДІЛЮ

Дорога в Христі молоде в Україні та на поселеннях! Квітня неділя, день славного Входу Христа в Єрусалим, для мене і для всього проводу нашої Церкви традиційно є

нагодою звернутися до вас з окремим посланням. Щоразу тішуся і дорожу цією можливістю, бо відчуваю особливий привілей разом міркувати і разом шукати відповіді на запити й потреби, до яких прислухаюся під час різноманітних зустрічей і розмов з вами протягом року. Цього року, попри незвичні життєві обставини, ви, молоді люди, навіть не йдучи до храму через введені обмеження, можете почути чи прочитати це наше звернення. Церква приходить до вас, хоч би де ви були: сподіваємося, що її голос, який звучить з екранів різної величини та модифікації, відгукнеться у ваших серцях, підтримає та надихне кожного і кожну з вас. Бути молодим завжди дуже гарно, а водночас непросто. Бо молодість — це відкрите гаряче серце, гнучкий допитливий розум та бунтівливий характер, що гостро реагує на будь-яку несправедливість, на кожне викривлення, на всяку кривду, які дорослі навчилися ігнорувати або ж використовувати. Для сучасної молодої людини виклик посилюється швидкістю та віртуальністю глобалізованого світу, економічною кризою та пандемією. Для молодих українців додається фактор несправедливої загарбницької війни на сході країни, в якій уже сьомий рік гинуть сини та доньки нашої Батьківщини, обороняючи її спокій і майбутнє. Світ огорнули непевність і страх. Мотиваційні промовці, мабуть, зароблять мільйони з виступами на тему «Як жити в час невизначеності». Випускники шкіл хвилюються, як проводитимуться ЗНО і вступна кампанія, а випускники вишів — чи знайдеться їм робота у світі, що швидко котиться в чергову економічну кризу. Власники маленьких кав’ярень стурбовані, чи вдасться їм відкритися після карантину, а програмісти — чи не скоротять замовлень великі закордонні компанії, на яких тримається фінансова стабільність їхніх фірм. Створюється враження, що немає сьогодні молодої людини, яка б не трепетала перед невизначеністю, що нависає над нами. Папа Франциск у своєму зверненні «Urbi et Orbi» («Місту і світу»), яке прозвучало нещодавно з нагоди молитви за відвернення пандемії коронавірусу, порівнює сучасну ситуацію з бурею на морі. Увесь світ — наляканий, дезорієнтований і розгублений, неначе сидить в одному човні, який кидають хвилі. У цій бурі ми відчуваємо свою крихкість, свою смертність, часом свою недосвідченість і зарозумілість. Проте ми, християни, знаємо, що в цьому човні на хвилях бурхливого моря з нами є сам Бог. З любові до нас Він став Людиною і помер на хресті, щоб ми «мали життя і мали його вповні» (Ів. 10, 10). Пам’ять про Воскресіння допомагає нам не поринати у відчай, а вчитися продовжувати веслувати і з довірою до Господа опановувати хвилі. Шлях до Воскресіння починається із тріумфального Входу в Єрусалим. Вхід до Єрусалиму — це початок нової епохи. У своїх стражданнях, смерті на хресті та Воскресінні Господь уклав Новий Завіт із усім людством. Ця нова угода вже не стосується одного народу, не обмежується однією країною чи культурою, а обіймає всіх — кожного і кожну з вас. На Тайній вечері, яку ми молитовно згадуватимемо цього тижня, Христос передав своїм учням Таїнство Євхаристії – Таїнство своїх Тіла і Крові, у яких цей Завіт усталений і запечатаний, — та виразно сказав, що Кров Нового Завіту проливається «за вас і за багатьох» (див. Мт. 26, 28; Мр. 14, 24; Лк. 22, 20). Це наша гарантія певності в непевні часи — Він нас викупив, зробив своїм народом, пролив і проливає за нас свою Кров. Вітаючи Спасителя, що входив в Єрусалим, молодими пагонами дерев, нові пагони людства – ізраїльські діти – стали носіями і благовісниками нового часу, нової епохи, суспільної парадигми, що змінила світ. Історія людства, зокрема історія Європи другого тисячоліття, показує, що після темних часів, трагедій чуми або холери людська спільнота трансформується і починаються нові епохи розвитку цивілізації. Багатьом стає зрозумілим, що саме це відбувається на наших очах і ми будемо свідками таких «тектонічних рухів», що змінять основи сучасних держав, економічних систем і способів організації світового співтовариства.

Подальша доля держав, систем і всього світового співтовариства залежатиме передовсім від того, чи цей сучасний «глобальний Єрусалим» відкриє свої брами для Бога, що в Христі-Спасителі приносить мир, мудрість і надію. Не менш важливо також, щоб у цей оновлений Богом «глобальний Єрусалим» молодь ввійшла не з порожніми руками, як лише пасивний спостерігач чи просто «людський ресурс». Молоді люди повинні, подібно як під час входу Христа до Єрусалиму, проявити себе, взяти за основу справжні цінності, що роблять людину людиною, і цим, наче зеленими галузками, привітати Спасителя-Месію. Лише тоді, коли сучасна молодь заспіває Йому «Осанна», цей новий світ стане світом людини і для людини, в якому будуватиметься культура життя, а не смерті, – світом, в якому людське життя, що його цінність ми вкотре для себе відкрили під час епідемії, буде наріжним каменем демократії, міжнародного права та нових глобальних економічних стосунків. Якщо цього не станеться і цих молодих «пальмових галузок» ніхто сьогодні в руки не візьме, то прихід нових смертоносних вірусів буде лише питанням часу. Проте, замість тремтіти перед невидимим ворогом, усім нам, а насамперед вам — молодим, треба об’єднатися у вірі та солідарній дії. Пам’ятаймо слова Папи Франциска: «Молитва й тихе служіння — це наша переможна зброя». Отже, перед нами чергова зміна епохи. Ми ще не знаємо, якою буде нова доба, проте чітко розуміємо, що саме ви є її людьми. Будьте благовісниками нової соціальної справедливості, нової парадигми милосердя, нових стосунків відкритості і служіння. Цьогорічні Великодні свята відзначаємо в один із найважчих періодів людства нової ери глобалізації. Протягом років ми втішалися мережевістю та взаємопов’язаністю, а тепер переживаємо глобальний карантин. Цей новий виклик вимагає від нас уважної творчості та розвинутої системи служіння. І в цьому ми потребуємо допомоги та підтримки креативної та винахідливої молоді. Ви ж справжні експерти! Не один внук чи внучка вмикали бабусі трансляцію Літургії, вчили дідуся користуватися Інтернетом, даруючи свій старий комп’ютер, показували, як оплачувати комунальні послуги онлайн і наказували не виходити з дому, а самі купували для них найнеобхідніше. Скільки благодійних громадських ініціатив з’явилося в різноманітних куточках України, що допомагають тим, хто виявився найуразливішим! Від імені старших людей Церква сьогодні каже вам: «Щире спасибі!» Продовжуйте і розвивайте своє служіння, дбаючи при цьому про особисту безпеку, скеровуйте свою енергію на тих, хто її потребує. Багато з вас давно не перебули так довго вдома — це шанс почути всі родинні історії! Спілкуйтеся, займайтеся спільними справами з найріднішими, з якими живете під одним дахом і проводите цей вимушений карантин. Це ще одна можливість відкрити дар особи, що є поруч! Не сумніваємося, що вам це вдасться. Епідемія, яку переживає наше покоління, — це наче прочуханка для зарозумілого людства, щоб відсіяти зерно від полови і ще раз усвідомити, що є найважливіше. Ми усвідомлюємо, що економічна криза, яка починається, болісно вдарить по найуразливіших – наших родинах, особах старшого віку і молодих людях. Її негативні наслідки відчують усі. Водночас, ми в цьому теж глибоко переконані, ця криза — це тест на милосердя, нагода для доброти та служіння. Хочемо, щоб зокрема ви, молоді люди, знали, що ваша Церква-мати проходитиме спільно з вами ці випробування, оточуючи та супроводжуючи вас і ваших рідних своєю неустанною молитвою. Ми стоїмо на порозі нового світу. Яким він буде – залежить від усіх нас. Сьогодні, як ніколи, час для найсміливіших ваших мрій: підкорити космос, винайти ліки від раку, подолати епідемії, збудувати справедливу економічну систему, захистити хворих і немічних, шукати альтернативні джерела енергії, сконструювати нешкідливі для планети засоби пересування тощо. Дерзайте! Мрійте про велике! Великого бажайте! Запросіть Христа до своїх мрій! Будьте певні, Він допоможе. Ісус Христос уже переміг найбільший наш страх і дав нам самого себе як невичерпне джерело надії і життя. У цей день Входу Господнього в Єрусалим відкрийте Йому всю ширину свого серця. Приймаючи нашого Спасителя в особисте життя, дозвольте Йому повести вас за Собою в те невідоме «завтра», яке саме Він зробить для нас світлим і радісним днем Його Воскресіння! PASTORAL LETTER OF HIS BEATITUDE SVIATOSLAV TO YOUTH ON PALM SUNDAY

Beloved in Christ Youth in Ukraine and abroad! Palm Sunday, the day of Christ’s triumphant entry in Jerusalem, is traditionally for me and the entire leadership of our Church an opportunity to address you with a special letter. I always cherish this opportunity because I consider it a special privilege to reflect

together and with you seek answers to questions and needs, which I have heard expressed at various encounters and conversations with you throughout the year. This year, in spite of the unique life circumstances in which we find ourselves, you, young people, without going to church due to the restrictions that have been placed on us, can listen to or read this appeal of ours. The Church comes to you, wherever you may be: we hope that the voice which will be heard on screens of various sizes and formats, will resonate in your hearts, lift up and inspire each one of you. It’s a wonderful thing to be young, but also not easy. Being a youth means having an open heart, an inquisitive mind, and a rebellious character that reacts sharply to all forms of injustice, every distortion, any wrong, which adults have learned to ignore or even exploit. For a young person today the challenge increases with the fast pace and virtualization of the global world, the economic crisis and pandemic. For young Ukrainians there is the additional factor of an unjust war of invasion in the east of the country, a war in which for the seventh year now, sons and daughters of our Fatherland continue to die, while defending peace and the future. Uncertainty and fear have enveloped the world. Motivational speakers will probably earn millions talking on the topic of “How to live in a time of incertitude.” High-school graduates worry about how they will do their SATs and apply to places of higher learning, while university and college graduates wonder whether they will find a job in a world that seems to heading rapidly towards economic crisis. Proprietors of small coffee shops are anxious about whether they will be able to reopen once the quarantine is over, programmers—whether orders from large international companies will be cancelled, as the financial stability of their businesses depend on them. One has the impression that today there isn’t a single young person who does not worry about the uncertainty that hangs over us. Pope Francis in his address, “Urbi et orbi” (To the City of Rome and the World), which was recently given on the occasion of Special Prayer for an end to the coronavirus pandemic, compares the current situation to a storm on the sea. The entire world is afraid, disoriented and lost, as if sitting in a single boat tossed by waves. In this storm we sense our fragility, our mortality, possibly our inexperience and arrogance. At the same time, we, Christians, know that in this boat on a turbulent sea God Himself is with us. He became Man and died on the cross, so that we “may have life and have it abundantly” (Jn 10:10). Remembering the Resurrection keeps us from falling into despair, and helps us to continue rowing and, with trust in the Lord, overcome the waves. The road to the Resurrection begins with the triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The entry into Jerusalem is the beginning of a new era. In his passion, death on the cross and Resurrection our Lord established a New Covenant with all humanity. This new pact no longer involves just one people, is no longer limited to a particular land or culture, but embraces all—each and every one of you. At the Last Supper, which we will prayerfully commemorate this week, Christ gave to his disciples the Mystery of the Eucharist—the Mystery of his Body and Blood, by which this Covenant is established and sealed. He clearly stated that the Blood of the New Covenant is poured our “for you and for many” (see Mt 26:28, Mk 14:24, Lk 22:20). This is our security guarantee in unsure times—He redeemed us, made us his people, has poured out and is pouring out his Blood for us. In greeting the Savior who entered Jerusalem with new tree shoots, the new branches of humanity—the children of Israel—became bearers and heralds of a new time, a new era, a social paradigm, that changed the world. The history of humanity, especially the history of Europe in the second millennium, demonstrates that after dark times, after tragedies of plague and cholera, human society transforms itself, opening a new age in the development of civilization. Many understand that this is precisely what is happening before our very eyes, and that we will be witnesses to such “tectonic movements” that will change the foundations of modern states, economic systems, and methods of organizing а common world community.

The future fate of country-states, systems, and all of global society will depend, above all, on whether the “global Jerusalem” of today will open its doors for God, who in Christ the Savior brings peace, wisdom and hope. No less important—that into this “global Jerusalem” being restored by God, the youth enter not with empty hands, as mere passive spectators or simply a “human resource.” Young people must, just as at the entry of Christ into Jerusalem, express themselves, take on as a foundation authentic values that make a person human, and thus, as if with green branches, welcome the Saviour-Messiah. Only then, when the youth of today sing to him “Hosanna” will this new world become a world of and for humanity, where a culture of life, not death, will be built—a world where human life, the value of which we have rediscovered in a time of epidemic, will become the cornerstone for democracy, international law, and new global economic relations. If this does not happen and no one picks up these young “palm branches,” then the emergence of new deadly viruses is only a matter of time. However, instead of trembling before invisible enemies, all of us, especially you, the youth, must united in faith and solidarity of action. Let us remember the words of Pope Francis: “Prayer and quiet service: these are our victorious weapons.” Therefore, we stand before the next change of an age. We do not know what the new age will be like. However, we clearly understand, that you, in fact, are its people. Be heralds of a new social justice, of a new paradigm of mercy, of new relations of openness and service. We approach this year’s Easter celebrations in one of the most difficult periods of humanity in a new era of globalization. Over the years we have enjoyed the benefits of networking and connectedness, and now we find ourselves in the midst of a global quarantine. This new challenge requires from us careful creativity and a developed system of service. And in this we need the assistance and support of a creative and inventive youth. You are the true experts! Many a grandson or granddaughter helped their baba follow the Liturgy online, taught their dido how to use the internet, gifted them their old computer, showed them how to pay for services online and insisted that they stay at home, while personally providing them with their necessities. How many charitable social initiatives have appeared in various corners of Ukraine to help those who are the most vulnerable! On behalf of our elderly today, the Church says to you: “Thank you, sincerely!” Keep doing what you do and develop your service, taking due care for your own personal safety; direct your energy towards those who need it. It’s been a while since many of us have spent so much time at home—a chance to listen to all the family stories! As you find yourselves under one roof and wait out this quarantine thrust upon us, relate to one another, do things together with your loved ones. This is another chance to discover the gift of the person that is next to you! Let us not doubt that in this you will be successful. This epidemic that our generation is experiencing is like a smack across the side of the head for an arrogant humanity—in order to separate the grain from the chaff and to become aware once again of what’s most important. We understand that the economic crisis now emerging will hit the most vulnerable the hardest—our families, the elderly, and the young. Its negative effect will be felt by all. At the same time, we are also profoundly convinced that this crisis is a test for mercy, an occasion for good and service. We would especially like for you, young people, to know that your Mother-Church will undergo these challenges together with you, embracing you and accompanying you and your loved ones with her ceaseless prayer. We stand at the threshold of a new world. What it will be like—depends on all of us. Today, more than ever, is the time for your boldest dreams: to tame the universe, to find a cure for cancer, to conquer epidemics, to build a just economic system, to protect the sick and helpless, to seek out alternate sources of energy, to construct means of transportation that don’t harm the planet, etc. Dare to dream! Dream big! Desire greatness! Invite Christ into your dreams! Be certain that he will help. Jesus Christ has already conquered our greatest fear and given us himself as a limitless source of hope and life. On this day of our Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem, open to Him the full expanse of your heart. In receiving our Saviour into your personal life, follow his lead into that unknown “tomorrow” which he himself will create for us, through his glorious and joyful Resurrection!
