Dear Parent/Guardian: Thank you for taking the time to fill out a TRiO Talent Search (TTS) application for your
student. TTS is a free program available at your school to help your student have a successful College career. Filling out a
TTS application is one of the most important things you can do to help your student have a smooth road to College!
Here at TTS your student’s school success is very important to us! We would like to help you prepare your
student for a successful College experience by offering wide variety of workshops aimed at helping improve your child’s
overall educational health such as:
Study Skills
Time Management
Budgeting Skills
Financial Aid Navigation Skills (available to you, too)
If your student is brought into the TTS program, meeting with their TTS advisor is vital!1 TRiO Talent Search advisors can:
Help match your student’s interests with potential career choices Provide support and advising in courses challenging to your student
Recommend universities that offer the best courses for your student’s interests
TRiO Talent Search also offers Campus Visits2, free to all TTS participants (grades 9-12)!3 Some of the Universities we visit include:
University of Michigan (Ann Arbor)
Northern Michigan University
Saginaw Valley State University
Ferris State University
Grand Valley State University
Central Michigan University
Michigan State University
Lake Superior State University
Please note that we are a federally funded, grant-based program.
As such we are responsible for verifying income, and promise to keep all information confidential.
It is only used for income verification and for classification (see below).
TRiO Talent Search’s primary target is low-income, first-generation students (LI/FG). However, we are allowed
to work with a smaller number of students that are not in this category (LI, or FG, or neither), but they may be put on a short-
term Waiting List. All of our schools must maintain a ratio of 70:30 (70% LI/FG to 30% that do not meet the LI/FG criteria)
Please don’t let this discourage you from applying. We do our best to bring students in off the Waiting List as soon as we can!
Because we are a popular program and do have a Waiting List, don’t wait to send in your application in the attached, self-
addressed envelope.
You may think that you have time to wait—but you don’t! The earlier we receive your application, the greater
opportunity you have to get your student into the program and on a smoother road to College! So start early, 6th graders
welcome!
If you have any questions, or would like more information, call us at (989)358-7348, or send us an email at
You can also checkout our website (listed below) for valuable resources available at no cost to you, and to see who we are and
what we can do for your student!
1 TTS participants must meet with their TTS advisor a minimum of three times per school year, or be discharged from
the TTS program.
2 Campus Visits vary by school year and by University availability.
3 Students pay a deposit for a seat on the bus. They will receive the deposit back when they are on the bus.
If they cannot go on the trip, they must call the TTS Office at least one week prior to the trip date, in order to have
their deposit returned.
TRiO may be able to help your

articipation in the TRiO Talent Search program is an honor and privilege. Included below are procedures and explanation for
both participants and parent/guardians. Please indicate that you have read and agree to the included information by signing below.
You must return a copy to our office to be considered “in good standing” with the program.
Academics: Academic success leading to postsecondary education and completion is the goal of the TRiO Talent Search program.
Therefore, participant grades are closely and regularly monitored by our office and advisors. Students MUST maintain a 2.0 grade point
average in core course, as well as an overall 2.0 GPA.
Attendance: You cannot learn if you aren’t in school. Poor attendance in school sets a precedent for poor attendance in college and/or
the workforce. As such, Talent Search participants are expected to exemplify good attendance. Please make the TRiO Talent Search
office aware of extenuating circumstances that impact the participant’s attendance by calling (989)358-7348 or emailing
Probationary Status: If a participant’s GPA falls below 2.0 or absences are excessive, the participant will be placed on probation by
the TRiO Talent Search program. The participant will then have a mandatory meeting with his or her advisor where they will discuss
and complete an Academic Improvement Plan (AIP). Participants must follow through with activities stated in the Academic
Improvement Plan; failure to comply with the AIP may result in dismissal from TRiO Talent Search. Advisors will be monitoring the
participant’s progress and academic improvement.
While a participant is on probationary status, he or she will not be able to take advantage of some of the wonderful opportunities offered,
including campus visit field trips and summer camps, because it is imperative that the participant is in school. It is the goal of TRiO
Talent Search to help students recognize the importance of their education and the steps necessary to bring grades up to satisfactory
level.
Expectations: It is required that all participants meet with their advisor a minimum of three times each academic year. Advisor
schedules for each school will be posted within the first two weeks of school. Seniors are expected to meet with their advisors more
often to ensure maximum benefit from our program. It is the responsibility of each participant to meet this obligation.
TRiO Talent Search is proud to provide many resources to assist students in college and career preparation. Participants are expected
to utilize these resources, as usage is tracked. This includes Constant Contact (email) and EZ Texting, these tools allow us to stay in
better contact with our participants. Participants are asked to provide an email address and check it often for important information,
responding as necessary. Mandatory surveys may be sent out to all participants.
Our 12th grade participants are required to complete a Postsecondary Educational Survey (PES). It is critical that 12th grade participants
provide accurate information in a timely manner on this form, as graduates will be tracked for six years post-graduation cohort, per
Grant.
Please keep the TRiO Talent Search updated with any changes to address, phone number or email address. You will receive important
communications throughout the year. We must have an accurate contact information on file (email, mailing address, phone number).
Field Trip Policies & Procedures: College campus visits and cultural field trips are an incredible opportunity for TRiO Talent Search
participants. Participants in grades 9* and above will be encouraged to visit college campuses to experience first-hand the campus
atmosphere, academics programs, and financial aid opportunities unique to each campus. Participants will be responsible for a $10
deposit (unless otherwise specified) to registered for each field trip. Advisors will give registered participants a permission slip and an
itinerary. Participants are required to be ON THE BUS prior to the listed departure time from their stop. This is critical, as the bus will
stay on schedule and will not wait for participants beyond the time listed. When boarding the bus, the participant will give the advisor
on the bus his or her completed permission slip, and the $10 deposit will be returned.
Participants must adhere to the behavior and dress code listed on the permission slip. Field trip attendees are representatives of the
TRiO Talent Search program, and must present themselves in a favorable way at all times.
If a participant is registered for a field trip and there is a change and he or she will not be able to attend, it is imperative that either the
participant or a parent/guardian call the TRiO Talent Search office at (989)358-7348 prior to the time that the bus would depart. If this
call is not made in a timely fashion, the participant will not be refunded the $10 deposit, and he or she will be placed on the “No Show-
No Go” list for the remainder of the academic year and will not be allowed on subsequent field trips.
Participation in the TRiO Talent Search program is an elite honor. It is a partnership between the program, the participant, and the
parent/guardian(s). In order for a participant to enjoy a rewarding experience in the program, all involved parties must be committed to
meeting expectations. If you have any questions, please contact the TTS office at (989)358-7348.
*there may be an 8th grade exclusive campus visit. Rules remain the same no matter what grade the field trip participant is in.
