OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE ~ NOVEMBER 21, 2021

LOOKING TO SUNDAY® The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe MY TRUTH? “For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.” With those words, spoken in this Sunday’s Gospel (John 18:33-37) Jesus tells Pilate the reason for his ministry and preaching. He came to testify to the truth. Such testifying to the truth continues today. It happens during court cases, congressional hearings, company board meetings, arbitration conferences, police investigations, and at family dinner tables. At those times, people are asked to testify about certain situations, events, or individuals. But as we know, very often what one person proclaims to be the truth, another person claims to be a lie. One person’s truth may not be another’s truth. In fact, today the word “truth” seems more and more to be modified by possessive personal adjectives. There is my truth, your truth, his truth, and her truth. Today, what is judged to be true seems to be determined by each person. For example, if I believe that human life is a gift from God to be cherished from conception to natural death, that is my truth. But if someone believes that human life is the lucky result of a series of random coincidences in a meaningless universe, then that is his or her truth. Of course, when truth is believed to be something determined by every person, it makes it difficult, if not impossible, to reach a common understanding of what is good or bad, right or wrong, or to agree on the meaning, value, or purpose of life. However, as Christians, we hold that truth is not something that we determine but rather something revealed to us by Jesus Christ. As he said, “I came into the world, to testify to the truth.” Jesus testified that God is a loving Father who created us to have a relationship with him. He testified that we become truly free by following God’s will and not our own. He testified that we are not meant to be isolated individuals, but we are created for a relationship with God and with our neighbor. He testified that by losing our life for his sake and that of the Gospel, we find it. Jesus not only testified to the truth, he embodied it. In seeing him we see the truth. As he said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) We hear that same message in Sunday’s Second Reading (Revelation 1:5-8), where we are told, “Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth.” This Sunday, the final Sunday of this liturgical year of 2018, we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. As we do so, we need to remember that our King is also the King of Truth. In a world where so many people define their own truth, Christians believe there is one truth that holds for all people everywhere and for all time. That is the truth to which Jesus testifies. Until people come to know and accept that truth, our world will be pulled in every direction but the right one! “For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.”

This email, entitled Looking to Sunday®, focuses on one or more of the scripture readings for the com-ing Sunday. It prepares readers to hear God’s Word at Mass and it offers a point of reflection to con-sider in the days leading to Sunday. Looking to Sunday is written by Father Tom Iwanowski.

Scripture Readings

November 21st - November 27th

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT First Reading: Jeremiah 33:14-16 The Lord tells of fulfilling the promise he had made to Israel. He will send a replacement for David, someone who "shall do what is right and just in the land," believed by most to mean Jesus. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 3:12—4:2 Paul encourages the Thessalonians to be ready for the coming of the Lord. He explains that although they are conducting themselves in a way that would please God, they should always strive to do even better. Gospel: Luke 21:25-28, 34-36 Jesus warns his followers to be prepared for the end of the world. He reminds them not to be preoccupied with unimportant events, or they will be caught unaware rather than being on watch as they should.

RECONCILIATION Saturday 1 PM

“Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom does not be-long to this world.” (John 18:36) Life is short. How much time, energy and money do you put into building “your” king-dom here on earth? We all know we can’t take it with us. The real kingdom is in the next life. Yet, how much time, energy and money do you invest in working for that eternal king-dom? Ask God for His guidance. Detach from earthly possessions. Generously share your material goods with others for the greater glory of God.

Trying to cope with grief? St. Catherine’s Be-reavement Ministry is a support group to give comfort to those who are suffering the loss of a loved one.

We will begin an abbreviated 4 week series on Monday, November 22 and Monday, Novem-ber 29, Tuesday, December 7 and Tuesday, December 14. We will cover a variety of topics chosen to help those who are grieving. The death of a loved one is difficult to accept and meeting with people who are feeling the same way can help. We will meet in the Parish Center Chapel from 7 pm until 8pm and light refreshments will be available. If you would like to attend these meet-ings or if you would like more information, please call Rosemary Couillou at (973) 239-7960, extension 104. Please join us for various presentations on relevant topics in a supportive atmosphere.

ALL ARE WELCOME!

Holiday Shopping & amazonsmile As you begin to do your holiday shopping, please consider using the smile.amazon.com website this year. Every purchase on this website directly helps St. Catherine of Siena Church at the same time.

You shop. Amazon gives back. Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the charita-

ble organization of your choice. Amazon Smile is the same Amazon you know and use every day. Same products, same

prices, same service. The prices of the items you purchase are the same as Amazon’s regular website. So it’s a

win-win for you and St. Catherine’s. Last month we received a check for $113. Simply go to http://smile.amazon.com, create an account, search for “St. Catherine of Siena Church” Cedar Grove, NJ and choose our name and correct town. Note: There are many dif-ferent churches with the St. Catherine of Siena name so make sure you choose the correct one. It’s a one-time setup that will apply to all eligible future purchases with no additional cost to you.

You may think that 0.5% doesn’t sound like much but if hundreds of shoppers in the parish sign up, donations back to St. Catherine of Siena will add up quickly! If you’re shopping and order-ing anyway, this is just one more simple way to help your parish all year long. Thank-you in advance for your support.
