La 26-an de julio Esperanto festas sian 129-an datrevenon, ĉar tiun da-ton en 1887 aperis Международный языкъ, la ruslingva unua libro publik-igita pri la nova "internacia lingvo" de iu mistera Doktoro Esperanto.

Okaze de la venonta "Esperanto-Tago" la Universala Esperanto-Asocio pretigis afiŝojn kun la trafesprimo "Justa Komunikado" en pluraj ling-voj, inkluzive de la angla. Tiuj afiŝoj diponeblas en pluraj formatoj, ĉu por presi sur paperon, ĉu por plusendi per virtualaj rimedoj.

at this year's AGM. He's been an Esperan-tist for nearly half a century. That doesn't mean he's old, by the way—he just start-ed out very young! Back in his early days he even corresponded with Gaston Warin-ghien—I've seen "Jano Carter" mentioned in GW's 1887 kaj la sekvo. Ian couldn't be present at the conference in Liverpool in person because he was already contract-ed to work elsewhere over the weekend before we set the date, but he still man-aged to appear virtually, sending a short video clip to the event.

EXAM SUCCESSRenato Corsetti successfully ran an exam session in Esperanto for the Common European Framework of Reference. There were, I think, nine candidates at different levels. EAB agreed to pay back the exam costs of successful candidates in order to encourage participation. The candidates will receive their diplomas from Renato at a meeting of the London Esperanto Club on September 9th.

KOMITATANO-AI asked at the previous two AGMs that people who would be interested in rep-resenting EAB on UEA's committee let us know. The role requires participation in a discussion list and in two or three meet-ings at the Universala Kongreso. UEA and EAB each pay half of the UK kotizo for the occupant.

The role is now vacant for the period 2016-19 because nobody has volunteered for it. If you think you might be willing to carry it out, please get in touch.

ESPERANTO CYMRUHats off to Dee McCarney, who has launched a website for Esperantists from Wales at esperantowales.wordpress.com. Dee has even gone to the trouble of writing nearly all the content in Esperan-to, English and Welsh too! It's also useful for people outside of Wales. For example, you'll find details about the Internacia Amikeca Renkontiĝo in Aylesford, from the 9th to the 12th of September, and the 2nd Tutkelta Kongreso in Britanny, from the 13th to the 20th of August.

Alina Mironova & Kat Newbould, new to Esperanto and now new members of EAB

I was awarded the Diploma of the (then) British Esperanto Association in 1968, which marked a turning point in my love affair with the International Language.

You see, I started taking it seriously. I asked myself “What can I do in Esperanto?” To my amazement, the answer wasn’t just “Write to people in different countries” (although I did my share of that). I was thrilled by the idea that I could translate things or even write original material that would appeal to a general readership.

When Ian Parker resigned as Editor of Kial Ne? (the magazine of the youth section, JEB), I took over, drawing (and lettering) each page by hand. No computers back then! I couldn’t keep it going forever, of course, and the final is-sue was the “festa numero” published in 1978. I recently put that issue online—all 100 pages of it—at kialne.info, so that

anyone could re-discover my somewhat irreverent cartoon strip “Superzam”, laugh at some jokes, or even do a cryptic crossword!

Now I find myself, all these decades later, taking over the reins from Paul Gubbins as provi-sional editor of La Brita Esperantisto. It’s exciting, but also a bit daunting, and I’d like to ask anyone who’s interested to send me material to be considered for publication at ian.carter@esperan-to.org.uk. If you were at the confer-ence or Buchanan Masterclass in Liverpool, I'd be delighted to re-ceive reports and photographs.

You can read a report (in English) from one of our new members, Kat Newbould, who attended one of our Lernu sessions last October and migrated to Lernu Plu this time, at esperanto.org.uk/events/lernu/reports. I think it's well worth five minutes of anybody's time to read some-thing so positive.

LIVERPOOL WAS THE ESPERAN-TO CAPITAL

Many of us were present in the Beatles' home city for two Esperanto events in March. The University of Liverpool hosted a three-day seminar, the Buchanan Mas-terclass, which was organised by Angela Tellier (in a voluntary capacity rather than for EAB) and featured contributions from Wim Jansen, Anna Lowenstein, Paul Gubbins, Duncan Charters and Renato Corsetti. Feedback from the 52 partic-ipants was that it was excellent. The 5th annual Buchanan lecture will be given by professor Sabine Fiedler on October 20th.

It was followed by our annual confer-ence, at the Gateway Centre. There was much to enjoy, particularly the Beatles competition in which several of our friends sang Esperanto translations of the Fab Four's songs. Thank you to those of you—the translators and the performers—who contributed. The conference's youngest attendee, eight-year-old Maggie, did ster-ling work as the judge and awarded two first prizes, to Peter Bolwell and Elizabeth "Cilla Black" Stanley.

Ian Carter was elected president of EAB

Long time, no see! Well, at least as far as Update goes, the "April" issue having had to come out in January because of the very early AGM. There's been a fair bit happening since then.

I'm typing this having just come back from another exhausting but exhilarating weekend at Esperanto House with our new learners, most of whom came our way after learning Esperanto on Duolingo. Our session for beginners, Lernu, sold out within three weeks of the previous session, back in April, having finished! Esperanto House was packed to the rafters, even with a couple of last-minute cancellations. We had about a third the number of people signed up as we've managed for our conference in some recent years!

You might notice that the list of new members is lengthier this issue than usual. It also contains a lot more younger people than it normally does. These two things aren't coincidental, several sign-

Jack klarigas, ke "en la progresanta grupo studentoj plifortigos sian kom-prenon de Esperanto per diversaj lingvaj ekzercoj. Tiuj estos precipe parolaj kaj ankaŭ celos amuzon. Inter kromaj temoj pritraktataj estos la internacia poŝtser-vo, difinoj de vortoj el PIV (kun kvizo), aŭtoŝildoj de Eŭropo kaj la vivociklo de la papilio."

Paul sciigas, ke "en la progresinta grupo ni pritraktos diversajn tekstojn de vidpunkto kaj de gramatiko kaj de enha-vo. La tekstoj inkluzivos aktualaĵojn, ĉu pri mondaj, ĉu pri esperantaj aferoj, ĉer-pitajn ĝenerale el revuoj kaj magazinoj. Ni esploros kelkajn aspektojn de esperanta literaturo, ekzemple surbaze de mallon-gaj poemoj. La celo: konversaciigi kaj, super ĉio, amuziĝi."

Partopreno en Somerlernejo sen-kostas, sed nepre mendu vian lokon (prefere rete, sed ankaŭ retmesaĝe aŭ

Drondo: Por la tria sinsekva jaro ni starigos sesion de nia paroliga kurso la 1an de oktobro 2016 ĉe la YMCA Club, 112 Great Russell Street, Londono. Kiel en la antaŭaj du jaroj, la kurso daŭros de la 11a matene ĝis la 5a posttagmeze kaj kotizo kostos £10.

Lernu/Lernu Plu: Following the two successful sessions of our beginners' and post-beginners' courses Lernu and Lernu Plu earlier this year, we've added another episode! The third session will take place from Esperanto House on October 14th

and 15th, with Anna Lowenstein looking after our beginners, whilst Ian Carter and Tim Owen share the teaching duties for the students who have progressed a bit more. For more details and to sign up, visit esperanto.org.uk/events/lernu.

Students will need to sort out their accommodation (we recommend the Travelodge at Trentham, espinfo.org/travelodge-trentham) and pay for their own meal on Saturday evening at a local restaurant, but the tuition and refresh-ments are entirely free.

Valle, ĝis lastatempe redaktoro de Esperanto, informas, ke "fariĝi la eldonis-toj de la tre renoma Heroldo de Esperanto estas revo de ĉiu ambicia entreprenisto".

Kial? Ĉar Heroldo portas brilan nomon kaj dum pluraj jardekoj estis unu el la ĉefaj Esperanto-legaĵoj. Je sia fondiĝo en 1920 (sub la nomo Esperanto Triumfonta) de Teo Jung, Heroldo estis unusemajna gaze-to, kiu sukcese travivis la nazian reĝimon kaj la skismon inter UEA kaj la Internacia Esperanto-Ligo. De Jung transprenis la redaktoradon Ada Fighiera-Sikorska en 1961, kiu ĝin redaktis ĝis sia morto en

Elizabeth Stanley raised in this year's AGM the idea of using a website to raise money for EAB, with the perk being that it wouldn't cost EAB members anything at all.

All you have to do when you do your regular online shopping is access the site from a certain page, and a percentage of the money spent is returned to a nominat-ed charity.

So what I've done is make it possible for EAB to be one of those charities, and all you have to do is create an account at easyfundraising.com and nominate Esperanto-Asocio de Britio as your charity

to support.Then whenever you fancy shopping

on Amazon, ebay (with have our own ac-count there too, espinfo.org/ebay), John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, or any of the oth-er hundreds of online retailers associated with it, go to easyfundrasing.com first. Find the retailer, click the "Go shopping" button and it will take you straight there, with a percentage of any money you spend during that visit returned to EAB. To simplify things you can even add your regular shopping sites to a favourites list.

So why not give it a go? It's quick and a way you can get a little money to EAB without it costing you anything!
