The role of libraries
An academic library is an environment for searching, accessing, and using information related to a specific research need
Information, especially specialized information, is a valuable social resource
Libraries accumulate, organize, protect, and make available information in many forms
University libraries are a major repository of information in a vast number of subject areas

This information is available in physical as well as digital form, such as books, audiovisual materials, and online, searchable databases
In libraries, information is a key resource, but not the only resource
