subject and make it accessible at different libraries on campus

specific information they need

§3.1

Libraries and information



The role of libraries

An academic library is an environment for searching, accessing, and using information related to a specific research need

Information, especially specialized information, is a valuable social resource

Libraries accumulate, organize, protect, and make available information in many forms

University libraries are a major repository of information in a vast number of subject areas



The role of libraries (2/3)

This information is available in physical as well as digital form, such as books, audiovisual materials, and online, searchable databases

In libraries, information is a key resource, but not the only resource

Trained personnel who can assist in searching for and finding needed information are an equally valuable resource



The role of libraries (3/3)

At West Virginia University, the libraries are central to the academic mission of the university: educating students, fostering innovative research, and providing valuable resources to the larger community

As such, libraries are the “place to be” for knowledge acquisition and production



§3.2

Library Collections



WVU Libraries, Morgantown

There are five libraries on the Morgantown campus at West Virginia University: Downtown Campus Library (DCL) Health Science Library (HSL) Law Library (Law) West Virginia & Regional History Collection Evansdale Campus Library (EVL)

Each library serves a specific set of academic disciplines



WVU Libraries, Morgantown (2/19)

The Downtown Campus Library is a newly constructed building with collections related to the humanities, mathematics, social sciences, physical sciences, and business and management

It is also a Regional Depository of U.S. Government documents




The Health Sciences Library is located on the second floor of the Basic Sciences building at the Health Sciences Center

It houses collections serving the WVU Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy




The Law Library is located on the second floor of the Law Center

It contains the largest law collection in the state, with materials in all areas of American law as well as resources in international law

It supports the students and faculty of the WVU College of Law




The West Virginia and Regional History Collection is located on the sixth floor of Wise Library, Downtown Library Complex

It contains the largest collection of historical, legal, folk music, photographic, map, and genealogical materials in the state




Evansdale Library serves a diverse number of academic departments on the Evansdale campus

In addition to its specialized collections, there are some general materials, such as encyclopedias, reference, and of course the extensive databases, available in-house and remotely




Evansdale Library possesses collections in a number of subject areas, consisting of books, specialized journals, CDs, DVDs, government documents, patents, audiovisual and other materials

Let’s list some of these subject area collections …




Agriculture: Serves the Davis College of

Agriculture, Forestry, and Consumer Science faculty and students

Resources include materials in subject areas such as plant science, entomology, agronomy, animal and veterinary science, landscape architecture, forestry, wildlife management, parks and recreation, food and nutrition, and interior design

Many of these materials are located on the second floor




Art and Art History: Serves the College of

Creative Arts faculty and students

Consists of resources on all areas of art

Art Department keeps a slide collection at the Creative Arts Center

Most of the library resources are on the ground floor




Children’s Collection: Serves the College of Human

Resources and Education faculty and students as well as public education teachers

Located in the Compact Shelving Unit on the ground floor




Education: Serves the College of Human

Resources and Education faculty and students

Consists of materials on all aspects of education

Most of these materials are on the ground floor

Some materials are located at the remote Depository




Engineering and Computer Science Serves the College of Engineering

and Mineral Resources faculty and students

These materials on the second floor cover chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, computer science and electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, mining engineering, and petroleum and natural gas engineering




Government Documents: Materials from such entities as the

Department of Education, the Department of Energy (DOE), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

Located in the Compact Shelving Unit on the ground floor




Music and Music History: Serves the College of Creative Arts

faculty and students Contains books and journals on

the ground floor Scores are located in the Short

Compact Shelving Unit on the ground floor

An extensive CD collection is located behind the Service Desk on the main floor




Physical education: Serves the School of

Physical Education faculty and students

Consists of books and journals in dance, sports studies, outdoor activities, etc. located on the ground floor




Theater: Serves the College of Creative Arts

faculty and students Consists of books and journals on

acting, production, set design, costumes and other aspects of technical theatre while many of the actual plays and drama criticism are located at the DCL

Located on the ground floor Script collection is located in the low

wooden book shelves on the main floor in the Food for Thought snack room




Theses: Masters theses and Pd. D./Ed. D

dissertations written by WVU graduates in the library’s subject areas

Beginning in 1998, WVU theses are available electronically from the libraries’ Database web page

Earlier, paper editions are currently stored at our remote Depository




U.S. Patents: Evansdale Library is a Patent and

Trademark Depository Library Resources include full-text copies of

all utility, design, and plant patents, going back to 1972

Abstracts of patents issued prior to 1972 and dating back to 1873, are found on microfilm #172

Patents are located on the main floor



Digital resources

All of the WVU Libraries have access to an extensive set of electronic databases

In addition, there are over 300 specialized databases available only at Evansdale Library

You will be given training on the database resources
