The solution is to organize information by academic

subject and make it accessible at different libraries on campus

Each library is a conduit for information related to specific

academic subjects for its location on campus

The role of libraries

An academic library is an environment for searching, accessing, and using information related to a specific research need

Information, especially specialized information, is a valuable social resource

Libraries accumulate, organize, protect, and make available information in many forms

University libraries are a major repository of information in a vast number of subject areas

Page 18: Revised FR 2013-05-17 14:35 EST Created WE 2004-07-21 Lesson 03. Library Resources / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © 2003-2013

The role of libraries (2/3)

This information is available in physical as well as digital form, such as books, audiovisual materials, and online, searchable databases

In libraries, information is a key resource, but not the only resource

Trained personnel who can assist in searching for and finding needed information are an equally valuable resource

Page 19: Revised FR 2013-05-17 14:35 EST Created WE 2004-07-21 Lesson 03. Library Resources / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © 2003-2013

The role of libraries (3/3)

At West Virginia University, the libraries are central to the academic mission of the university: educating students, fostering innovative research, and providing valuable resources to the larger community

As such, libraries are the “place to be” for knowledge acquisition and production

Page 20: Revised FR 2013-05-17 14:35 EST Created WE 2004-07-21 Lesson 03. Library Resources / Bringing Learners and Library Skills Together Copyright © 2003-2013
