    Macro

    Since the site lies within the Lake Victoria basin, it receives abundant Convectionalrainfall, suitable for agriculture. This will reduce the need to depend on irrigation forthe proposed Permaculture demonstration garden.

    The orientation of the proposed prototypes and hospice units are influenced by theprevailing South-east winds from the lake in order to maximise natural ventilation.

    Micro

    The proposed community hub is neighboured by a Primary School for the physicallyhandicapped in the east. The proposed market is situated next to the s chool, with apublic lawn to provide spillover space for community gatherings. This is intended tofoster interaction among the children from the school, the elderly on site and othermembers of the c ommunity.

    Apparently, the site lacks a public sewer system. There is also lack of a culture ofseparating biodegradable material from non-biodegradable waste.

    The proposed waste management facility will be situated east of the Permaculturegarden. This facility has compartments to separate non-biodegradable waste frombiodegradable waste. Non-biodegradable material such as plastic bottles and canswill be filled with soil and reused as flower pots.

    All the biodegradable waste from the Hospice unit, Market and Health centre will bechanneled to biogas digesters.

     Composting toilets are used for the proposed Prototype due to;

    Social concern- According to the public consultations carried out within the community,people preferred Composting toilets since they require less water to clean andmaintain them compared to water closet toilets.

    Recycle and reuse- The solid waste is converted into compost which is used in thegardens to improve on soil fertility. The ash from the kitchen and organic garbage isadded to the compost to enable the process of decomposition.

    The proposed prototype incorporatesvertical gardening for the very purposeof maximising the minimal space. Thevertical gardens are also advantageousin the following ways:

    -They enable the elderly to work whilestanding hence saving the back from alot of wear and tear.

    -Keeping plants off the ground freesthem from soil-borne diseases andpests.

    -They increase the green cover of theneighbourhood.

    The crops planted grow out of the potsby the process known as Phototropism-the natural response of plant shootstowards light.
