HistoryRiverside has rich and fascinating history. The original Riversdale estate centred around Riversdale, a grand and imposing Victorian house built in 1885 complete with boathouse. This property was owned by, among others, Louis Bleriot, the first man ever to cross the channel in an aeroplane, and was bought in 1907 by George A. Kessler, the American millionaire, wine merchant, and (later) survivor of the sinking of the Lusitania, who was known as The Champagne King.
He made drastic changes to Riversdale to create an Elizabethan style mansion that he named New York Lodge. No expense was spared in creating this impressive riverside house, where Kessler could entertain on a grand scale, with lavish parties on the banks of the River Thames.
The mansion was destroyed in a fire in 1926 and the land was divided into plots. However, the original boat house remains to this day and forms ancillary accommodation to Riverside, having been sympathetically restored and converted to create an annexe to the new house.
RiversideRiverside is a brand new property which has been designed and built to the highest standards overlooking the Cookham Reach stretch of the River Thames. The intention was to take full advantage of this exceptional position on the banks of the river and to maximise the panoramic views whilst retaining privacy and seclusion. The house is approached through electric gates, with the driveway cleverly configured to protect the house from view. The drive is lined with lawns and there is substantial parking as well as a double garage.
On entering the house one is immediately struck by stunning views over the river which are visible from the front door. The architecturally designed house has been cleverly laid out to create an open plan space which manages to retain individual areas with a degree of separation. There is a well appointed kitchen, designed for entertaining, with vaulted ceiling and quality appliances, having plenty of work space, including a large central island unit. The utility room provides useful space for a washing machine, dryer and storage as well as a Mega flow, boiler and water softener.
From the entrance hall, the kitchen leads through the dining area onto the drawing room with a stunning working gas fireplace providing some drama, (main source of heating in the house being under floor heating). Floor to ceiling solar glass doors provide exceptional panoramic views and seamlessly open onto the terrace outside which provides an idyllic spot for relaxation and al fresco dining. Leading round from the drawing room there is a good sized family room, ideal for a games / cinema room, with full height solar glass windows offering views over the gardens and drive. This space can be instantly separated or incorporated using a huge concealed pocket door. Also on this floor there is a good sized office (potential ground floor bedroom 5) with shower room en-suite, as well as a guest WC and storage cupboard.
There are three bedrooms on the first floor. The master bedroom occupies the full width of the house across the rear, providing exceptional views over the river and luxurious space. There are plenty of built in wardrobes and an en-suite bathroom as well as a separate en-suite shower room.
The two further bedrooms on this floor each have an en-suite shower room.
On the second floor, there is a further bedroom and bathroom along with a landing space with fitted desk.
The lighting throughout the house and grounds is a particular
feature, having been designed by a leading lighting consultant,
an expert on ’Grand Designs Live’
Rako Lighting technology has been built in allowing flexibility in
the future.
The house is designed to Environment Agency calculations for
flood prevention purposes.
Riverside is a beautifully built property perfect for those with a
true appreciation of the peace and quiet of the river, yet with all
amenities on your doorstep.
