Letter from the President

Hi everyone! My name is Thu Pham, and I am so honored to serve as your president for the 2018-2019 school year. I have been in Key Club since freshman year, and I am so grateful for all of the opportunities that this club has given me, especially meeting amazing people and having the chance to make a difference in the community.

My favorite service projects are Agape Meal and the Mobile Food Pantry because it allows me to directly interact with the people I am serving! As president, my main goal is to spread the love of community service. Outside of Key Club, I play

piano for the PHS jazz band and am also involved in science club, penta club, feminist club, and recycling club. I also volunteer at my church’s food pantry and through InTune, where I get to teach elementary school students how to play piano! In my spare time, I enjoy sleeping (who doesn’t?), hanging out with my sister, and reading.

Please feel free to reach out to me or the other board members if you have any concerns or great ideas about how to make Key Club better! I’m looking forward to a great year!!

Letters from the BoardHello Key Club! My name is Grace Yeo, and I am honored

to serve as your Treasurer for this upcoming year! My goal as

Treasurer is to set a budget so that we will have the resources

needed for service projects and DCON. I am also determined

to increase the number of FUNdraisers we have as a way

to raise money, get to know fellow members better, and

promote Key Club to other students at Paschal. Aside from Key

Club, I am also an active participant in orchestra, Fellowship

of Christian Athletes and Students (FCAS), and National Honor Society. My hobbies include

running, practicing the viola, and playing with my awesome younger brother Andrew. One of

my long-term goals is to see Key Club grow and expand through serving our community. I am

so excited for what this year has in store, and I look forward to serving with every one of you!

Grace Yeo, Treasurer

Hey Key Clubbers! I am Hailey Presnall, an upcoming

junior, and I will be your secretary for the 2018-2019 school

year! I have been a part of Key Club since the beginning of

my freshman year at Paschal and have enjoyed every part

of it. I think Key Club is such a great club that offers so many

opportunities that allows me to become more active in my

community! I love to spend as much time with my family as

possible, hang out with my friends, and do little crafts that

give me time to myself, all while staying a committed student!

Letters from the BoardHi Key Club Members!!! My name is Peter Kim and I’m a

freshman at Paschal this year. I love playing basketball, playing

video games, and sleeping during my spare time. Honestly,

the beginning of the school year was so hectic and I didn’t

know what club to join. I heard about Key Club and thought

it was worth it to give it a shot. It was so nice this year to see

so many people come together and all pitch in to serve the

community. I know I was shy and awkward this year so one of

my main goals as Sophomore Rep. is to make Key Club a more open, amicable environment

for incoming freshman. I can’t wait to see this club grow next year!!!

Peter Kim, Sophomore Representative

Hey Guys!! My name is Grace Wimberly, and I’m very excited

to be your Sophomore Representative for the 2018-2019 school

year! I joined Key Club my freshman year, and have enjoyed

every moment of it. From the weekly volunteer opportunities,

to our Day of Service, Key Club is a great opportunity to get

involved and make a difference in our community. I’ve lived in

Fort Worth for most of my life, but never really been directly

involved within the community. Key Club has opened my

eyes to so many service opportunities and just how much our

community appreciates and needs local volunteers. I am excited for the upcoming year to see

all that is in store for everyone involved!

Dear Key Clubbers,

First, I want to congratulate the new board that has been elected. I know that all of you are going to do great things for the PHS Key Club, and that the club will be taken farther than it ever has, and will reach new heights. Originally, I was going to run for treasurer, but with the encouragement from a couple of my friends, I found myself running for president. Becoming president of Key Club has honestly been one of the highlights of my high school experience. I have gotten to know so many great people and been able to work with

great supervisors. I loved to see the smiles on everybody’s faces as the bell was rung every Tuesday at eight, and then hear the passion as the pledge was read.

I first joined Key Club the beginning of my junior year when my friend told me that he was going to go to a meeting on a Tuesday morning and I decided to tag along. Soon enough I saw the greatness in the club and the power of what it is doing for others. In just a little time, I went to my first Key Club event, Braille Bibles. I had no clue how to do anything, but everybody that was there was very welcoming to all the new members as well as willing to teach us how to make the bibles and have great conversations with us. Braille Bibles then became one of my favorite things to go to, because it was such a great place to have fun with friends while giving back to the community at the same time.

I am so glad that I decided to run for president because it has brought me so much joy. Key Club has brought me new friends and new ways for everybody to give back to the community. It is bittersweet that my time as president has ended, but knowing that such a great group of people is taking over the board makes it easier. Thu, you are going to do great things as president, and do not forget that you have a great group of people right there with you. I just want to say thank you to everybody that I was on the board with, and the supervisors because you all were the best people to work with. It was great to work with such a fun, caring, well-organized group. I cannot wait to hear about the great things that this club will be doing next year, and I know that this club will only keep expanding, expanding, and expanding. Good luck to everybody next year, and never forget what good a little community service can do!

Adios,

Maya Bloom

On April 29, I had the wonderful opportunity of volunteering with Laisen Jamir, Daniel Oh, some North Crowley Key Clubbers, and some Kiwanians at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life at TCU. For those of you who don’t know, the American Cancer Society is an organization that funds cancer research, spreads awareness about cancer, and supports cancer patients. The foundation holds “Relays for Life” throughout the country to raise money. At these relays, people register to walk or run, and their registration fees go to the foundation. Furthermore, many volunteers, including Kiwanis Club, come to the relays to sell various items to also fundraise for the foundation.

Unfortunately, it was forecasted to rain that day, so the Relay had to be moved to the indoor practice facility. However, this did not stop the American Cancer Society from organizing a truly wonderful event. When

Laisen, Daniel, and I arrived, we headed straight to the Kiwanis booth to ask if we could help out. The Kiwanians were going to sell pizza, generously donated by Domino’s Pizza, to raise money for the American Cancer Society, but the pizza hadn’t arrived yet.

To burn some time before we needed to help out, we walked around the track a couple times, enjoyed some live music, and looked at the other booths that were raising money. Eventually, we ran into some North Crowley Key Clubbers, who had also come to help Kiwanis Club. We still had plenty of time before the pizza arrived, so we offered to help a booth that was commemorating people who had tragically lost the fight to cancer. We helped the booth by putting paper bags around the track that contained an electric candle, a message from the victim’s family, the victim’s name, and his/her picture. We spread these bags all around the track and made sure that they didn’t fall over, because later that night, other volunteers would light the candles inside the bags.

Once the pizza arrived, we moved to the Kiwanis table to help sell pizza. We developed a very good system for selling the pizza. Daniel handled the money, which was honestly a questionable choice (no offense, Daniel); Laisen drew in customers with a smile and peppy attitude; and I helped get the pizza on the plates. Overall, we sold a considerable amount of pizza and learned that pepperoni was apparently much more popular with this crowd. Kiwanis generously gave Laisen and Daniel a pizza each to take home. We also bonded a lot with the North Crowley Key Clubbers. Overall, volunteering at the Relay for Life was a great experience: we loved getting to know our Kiwanians and fellow Key Clubbers better, and it was meaningful to volunteer for such an important cause.

Hi everybody! My name is Thu Pham, and I am your president for the 2018-2019 school year. On April 7, our (immediate past) Key Club board had the wonderful opportunity of volunteering with the North Crowley High School Key Club board at the Ronald McDonald House to make breakfast for the families staying there. The Ronald McDonald House provides a supportive home-away-from-home to families with critically ill children. By providing these families a home right next to the hospital district, the Ronald McDonald House is able to keep families together even while the children have to receive frequent (sometimes even daily) treatments. I was able to volunteer with Mr. Drummond (our amazing Kiwanis sponsor), Lauren Harris, Kirsten Bowen, Maya Bloom, Arti Golemi, and seven other North Crowley board members. It took a lot of coordination and communication, but it was very worth it. I met the North Crowley board members at one of our Divisional Council Meetings (meetings between board members of different Key Clubs

in our districts), and they have been nothing but kind and helpful since I have met them!

Before we could actually cook breakfast for the families, we had to do some planning ahead of time. I went to a Kiwanis meeting in late March to ask them for advice about this project, since they often cook dinner for Ronald McDonald. Not only did they give us valuable advice, but they also offered to completely reimburse us for the cost of the ingredients. So, thank you Kiwanis for your support and help! I then went shopping with a couple North Crowley board members to buy the ingredients for the breakfast. We wanted to make breakfast tacos, so we bought tortillas, cheese, lettuce, bell peppers, sausage, and all of the other essentials for a good breakfast taco.

13

The day had finally come! At 7:30 AM on April 7, our board members and North Crowley’s board met at the Ronald McDonald House on 8 th Avenue for our service project. Once we had brought all the ingredients into the kitchen, we split off into groups to perform all of the different jobs: making scrambled eggs, chopping the lettuce, slicing the bell peppers, heating up the tortillas, and frying the sausage. It was so fun to bond with the Key Clubbers from North Crowley! They are all very kind people who have an amazing passion for community service. If you ever see them at an event, don’t hesitate to start a conversation and get to know them!

Once we had managed to prepare all of the ingredients (we were under a bit of a time crunch, plus not many of us were very good at cooking), we laid them out on the counter for the families so that they choose what they wanted to put in their tacos. We met many wonderful families who were staying at the house, especially their adorable kids. Their gratitude and happiness made me realize how a simple gesture like making breakfast can be so important to people who are going through a rough patch in life. This experience also made me very grateful for a place like the Ronald McDonald House, which emphasizes the value of family during difficult times.

Overall, serving at the Ronald McDonald house this month was an unforgettable experience. Not only did I get to meet some other amazing Key Clubbers, but I also realized the importance of simple gestures and family. I also really felt inspired by everybody at the service project, both by the other hardworking Key Clubbers and strong, resilient families that we met. If we ever have an opportunity like this again, I encourage you to sign up to volunteer! I promise that it will be amazing!!

From April 13 to 15, Paschal High School Key Clubbers Wes Addington, Thu Pham, Taha Sharaf, Daniel Oh, and I all went to the TO-DCON! We were accompanied by our amazing chaperones Ms. Sechrist, Ms. Denton, and Mr. Bretthauer on our way to Dallas. Paschal participated in several contests. I participated in the impromptu essay and digital poster contest, Wes presented for the oratory contest, and Thu prepared the binders for the single service award and newsletter contest.

The first day of DCON was filled with different forums that you could attend. We got to hear many amazing charities talk about their organizations, and how our Key Club could get involved. My personal favorite forum was the Thirst Project forum. Their mission is to provide

clean water to third world countries so that they do not have to rely on dirty water. This has been an issue that I have cared about since eighth grade, so to hear how people can get involved with issues like this are important to me.

The second day focused on the elections of our new Texas-Oklahoma district board members and the House of Delegates. In the morning, we had to listen to several district board candidates speak about why they are running and what they plan to do. After deliberating on who our club wanted to vote for, Daniel and I attended the House of Delegates. In the House of Delegates, two representatives from each school club congregated to decide who to vote for, and what Key Club rules needed to be added, removed, or changed. Later in the evening, there was an awards ceremony and the announcement of our new TO District officials. Unfortunately, Paschal did not win any awards, but we won in spirit.

DCON is definitely an experience that I believe every Key Clubber should experience at least once. Before DCON, you do not realize how MASSIVE Key Club is as an organization. Everyone is so passionate about serving their club and community, and it is something that you do not fully understand until you attend DCON. The convention definitely changed my attitude towards Paschal’s Key Club, and it even inspired Thu and I in the creation of a long term service project, and a DCON competition committee. I encourage everyone next year to try and go to DCON. It truly is the KEY to understanding Key Club.

On May 19 on a Saturday morning, President Thu Pham, Historian Lily Goldberg, Daniel Oh, and I went to the Trinity River Trash Bash. There, we picked up trash that had been accumulated around the Trinity River’s banks over the year. Our Key Club group was surprised with the presence of some fellow Key Club family from North Crowley: North Crowley’s Key Club president Anne and her friend Justin. We all worked together to pick up approximately 10 trash bags worth of garbage across the area. From 10 in the morning to 12 in the afternoon, our team worked to clean up both the trinity river, and the bodies of water surrounding the area. We went over a hill to find a secluded stream where we were able to help out by picking up more trash that others did not see due to it being hidden. There were a lot of spiders near the stream so we did not stay there long, but we were able to pick up the trash dispersed around the area. We saw some wild life as well such as a snake skin and a turtle living on the Trinity. There were also a lot of bugs and tall grasses, and I definitely got my fair share of chigger bites, but it was definitely worth it to hang out with my fellow Key Clubbers and to help out with the cause.

This service project was a prime example of Key Club helping to serve the community. Many people carelessly dispose of their waste on the ground instead of a trash can, and this trash eventually accumulates on the sides of rivers where animals have the possibility of choking on them, and the chemicals and plastic of the trash could pollute the river. From the trinity river diatom (algae) research that I have conducted over the past year, there are several warning signs of the poor water quality in the river. The species of diatoms that inhabit the water are only able to reside in very specific water types, and several types of algae that we found indicates that the Trinity River is highly polluted. So doing this job is important in maintaining the health of this aquatic ecosystem. I am proud of our Key Club for taking the time out of their day on a Saturday morning to help out with the trash bash, and I cannot wait to do it next year!

On Tuesday, May 21st, Paschal Key Club hosted a card making event at lunch. We created this event in hopes that new recruits would come and get to experience a little taste of what Key Club is really about: serving others! We had roughly 30 kids come in and make cards to check out our club and its values. This is only one of the ways we get to recruit new people at Paschal High School. I think what’s really cool about the card making is that all of the students making the cards came on their own time to serve our school. The cards were for all of our hard working teachers to give them a tiny token of our gratitude for all that they do for us and our school as a whole. I enjoyed seeing different students from all four grades interacting with each other and communicating through serving. The teachers at school work very hard to make sure their students succeed in not only their academics but in their personal lives, too. Many times these actions go unrewarded, so card making was just a small action that we took to show our appreciation and gratitude for all of their hard work throughout the year. I really love Key Club because of the small steps we take to cause a ripple effect. By that, I mean that our small actions in our school community reaches out to our neighborhood community, and then eventually spreads to our Fort Worth community because of the service projects and volunteer opportunities we have through our Paschal Key Club. So, even though this small act of card making may seem insignificant, if I could brighten one person’s day or make someone smile, that is fulfilling enough for me. Part

of being in Key Club is giving your time and service, and not necessarily expecting anything in return. I believe that is part of what makes Key Club so special, the fact that students in high school are volunteering their time to give back to their community. Overall, I think that the card making at lunch was a great idea and great opportunity to encourage new people to join Key Club, and to give back to our teachers. I hope that we have more events like this in the future and that we can keep growing Key Club to its fullest potential next year!

Here’s the Scoop on the Ice Cream Event!

Hello Key Clubbers! This is Grace Yeo, your 2018-2019 Key Club Treasurer! I’m so excited for this upcoming year and look forward to serving with all of you!

On the last day of the 2017-2018 school year, a big group of Key Club members participated in the annual ice cream service project at Paschal. Many students leave on the last day of school as soon as possible ready to start their summer vacation. What they fail to realize is that their teachers stay behind to submit grades and prepare for the next school year.

Every year, Key Club has shown our appreciation for Paschal’s administrators, teachers, and staff by providing them with a sweet treat. Through the generous support of the Kiwanis Club (thank you Mr. Drummond!) and donations from Key Club members, we were able to create a sundae bar complete with ice cream, cherries, chocolate, cookies, syrup, and other various toppings.

The idea of this project is to serve ice cream to administrators, teachers, and staff. This was done in a variety of ways. Some of our members approached teachers as they waited in line to turn in grades. They took down their orders, ran back to assemble their sundae, and quickly delivered it to them for their enjoyment. The sundae bar was also open to administrators, teachers, and staff for them to build their own sundae. In case we missed anybody, some members visited classrooms to ask if anyone would like ice cream delivered to them; I mainly helped with this group. Although this was honestly a little tiring (I mean, who isn’t tired at the end of the school year?), and we didn’t find many teachers, it was still worth it. The few teachers we were able to find were very happy that we had remembered them, and it was fun to run around the school with my fellow Key Clubbers!

This is my second year participating in this service project, and both times have been amazing experiences. This service project is important because it is a great way of giving back in a small way to our Paschal leaders who have selflessly given their time and effort during a long school year. I loved seeing the smiles on their faces when they received their ice cream. This project was also a great opportunity to further relationships with fellow Key Club members. If you have not had a chance to take part in this project, I encourage you to join us next year, or at least donate some items to the sundae bar!

On Saturday, May 26, Zoe Seymore and I volunteered at the monthly mobile food pantry. The mobile food pantry is affiliated with the Tarrant Area Food Bank. Having worked with several food pantries, I think that the Mobile Food Pantry is really special because it distributes fresh food. For example, at my church food pantry, we distribute a lot of packaged food. Although this packaged food is definitely necessary, fresh fruit and vegetables are essential to people’s health, but unfortunately, they are usually more expensive than packaged food. This is why I think the Mobile Food Pantry is especially important, since it only gives out fresh food like lettuce, cucumbers, apples, and so much more.

Zoe and I arrived at the food pantry parking lot around 8:00 AM to help set up the distribution line. The mobile food pantry is arranged in an assembly line: the clients line up at one end and move down the tables, selecting the food they want. Zoe and I were in charge of distributing green beans and potatoes. Other volunteers helped the clients carry their food out to their cars and even took shopping carts if necessary. The stronger volunteers helped lift large bags of produce on to the table when the distributing volunteers had run out of food from a package. We met a couple volunteers that were working nearby us. They were very nice, and they reminded me again why I love volunteering: I get to meet so many like-minded and kind-hearted people!

The mobile food pantry that day was especially busy, and it was sweltering hot outside (yay for Texas summers!). Thankfully, we had set up awnings over the tables, which made it a little better. Despite the less than ideal weather, we had a wonderful experience serving people in our community. Zoe and I met at least eighty different clients, and their joy at receiving the fresh food was evident. We learned about their favorite dishes and what they planned to do with their food. We also used some Spanish (thank you Señora Rodríguez and all my other Spanish teachers) to help out the clients who didn’t know English very well.

When we left, we had served at least eighty different people, and the experience was very meaningful. I had a wonderful time meeting so many different people, and I was again reminded how important it is for people to get fresh and nutritious food. If you are ever free on the last Saturday of the month, I highly recommend that you come to the mobile food pantry. It may be a little bit out of your way, but the experience is completely worth it. It’s very important to venture outside of our usual bubbles and help the parts of the community that we’re not very familiar with. You will be amazed at the resilience of these people and gain a deeper appreciation for basic necessities like a home, fresh food, and education.
