  2. 2. Roy [email protected] Dinosaur Discoveries: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas C: 646-245-2749 Project description: - Travelling exhibition produced by the American Museum of Natural History - 1500 sq ft exhibition - Retain elements of existing exhibition on a condensed scale - Created installation documentation - Fabrication Budget: $100K Project duration: 15 weeks (design), 10 weeks (fabrication and installation) This spin-off exhibition is based on a much larger (6200 sq ft) exhibition on the science and technology of modern paleontology. It was pre-sold by AMNH to a client for a two-year run where it would visit six venues. Everything about the exhibition had to be smaller and simplified. The original exhibition takes three weeks to install, this one had to be completed in four days. The original exhibition needs to hang from the ceiling, attach to the floor and is handled by a team of in-house installers. This exhibition had none of those luxuries. It needed to be plug-and- play. Because this exhibit would never appear in New York, it received less scrutiny from the Exhibitions Department and AMNH administration. I was at the head of a small team that re-wrote, re-designed, re-evaluated and re-populated the exhibition with replacement objects and casts. To scale down the exhibit, everything had to be re-thought. In the end we produced an exhibit that is easier to travel than the original. It can be sold to a wider range of venues who do not have the necessary facilities for the other travelling exhibitions that are produced by AMNH. 0 5 10 15 FT 6.1 5.5 5.46.3 1.3 1 Introduction 2 Theropod Biomechanics 3 Sauropod Biomechanics 4 OMIT 5 Display or Defense 6 Liaoning Diorama 7 Extin 1.1 Show Intro 2.1 Section Intro Panel 3.1 Section Intro Panel 5.1 Section Intro Panel 6.1 Section Intro Panel 7.1 Sectio 1.2 Show Title 2.2 Interactives Kiosk 3.2 Metal Apatosaurus Neck 5.2 Triceratops Case 6.2 Specimen Graphics 7.2 Extinc 1.3 Credit Panel 2.3 T-Rex Leg 3.3 Interactives Kiosk 5.3 Protoceratops (X2) & Juvenile Skull 6.3 Diorama 7.3 Surviv 2.4 Small T-Rex Model 3.4 Vertebrea IA 5.4 Spikes & Hardheads 6.4 Flip Panel IA 7.4 Extinc 2.5 T-Rex Walking Video 3.5 Video Wall 5.5 Scientists @ Work Video (5 & 6) 7.5 Scien 2.6 Scientists @ Work Video (2 & 3) 0 5 10 15 FT 6.2 2.1 5.1 6.1 2.2 2.3 2.4 2.5 2.6 3.3 5.5 7.1 7.3 7.4 3.2 3.5 5.2 7.5 5.3 7.2 5.4 3.1 6.3 6.4 1.1 1.2 1.3 3.4 Sub-Woofer Plan - 1500 Sq ft Scale: 3/16" = 1'-0" 1 1 Introduction 2 Theropod Biomechanics 3 Sauropod Biomechanics 4 OMIT 5 Display or Defense 6 Liaoning Diorama 7 Ex 1.1 Show Intro 2.1 Section Intro Panel 3.1 Section Intro Panel 5.1 Section Intro Panel 6.1 Section Intro Panel 7.1 Se 1.2 Show Title 2.2 Interactives Kiosk 3.2 Metal Apatosaurus Neck 5.2 Triceratops Case 6.2 Specimen Graphics 7.2 Ex 1.3 Credit Panel 2.3 T-Rex Leg 3.3 Interactives Kiosk 5.3 Protoceratops (X2) & Juvenile Skull 6.3 Diorama 7.3 Su 2.4 Small T-Rex Model 3.4 Vertebrea IA 5.4 Spikes & Hardheads 6.4 Flip Panel IA 7.4 Ex 2.5 T-Rex Walking Video 3.5 Video Wall 5.5 Scientists @ Work Video (5 & 6) 7.5 Sc 2.6 Scientists @ Work Video (2 & 3) Drawing Name: Date RScale:Exhibition:
  3. 3. Roy [email protected] Dinosaur Discoveries: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas C: 646-245-2749 Triceratops Case To display a this skull cast, we built a large box to surround it. This allows the visitors to get very close to the object and fully appreciate its scale. The tips of the horns are only 4" away for the acrylic. Left: In the original exhibition, the Triceratops was hung up high and out of reach. Right: The entire wall of the exhibition had many skulls and specimens to compare different display or defense traits. Metal Apatosaurus Neck & Video Wall To explain how an Apatosaurus neck works, the exhibition has a model of a neck. The model is patterned after a computer simulation of dinosaur neck. Behind the model is a wall of 6 LCD monitors, showing how the bones and muscles work.
  5. 5. Roy [email protected] Dinosaur Discoveries: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas C: 646-245-2749 Left: In the original exhibition, there was a model of a full 60' long Apatasaurus. Right: The skull of the Apatasaurus. Metal Apatosaurus Neck & Video Wall When presented together the model, the interactive touch screen and the video show visitors how a dinosaur's long neck would work. Limitied by size, this exhibition had the front 12' of the neck and the skull.

This exhibition focuses on the biomechanics of theropods, with T-Rex as an example. However, such a large theropod would never fit in such a small exhibition.
