TRANSCRIPT

IIn 19th century France the Arts were enlivened by an expansive concept of the artist’s working studio. Rather than being a utilitarian and solitary workshop, the studios, or Ateliers, became an exciting

creative hub, bursting with the energy of the times—a meeting place for artists, writers, infl uential thinkers, and musicians. Th e cross currents of infl uence and mutual inspiration brought new vibrancy to all the arts. In this tradition, artists like Rodin, Carpeaux, and Carrier-Beleuse supervised busy workshops, encouraged the growth of new talent, and employed skilled artisans. Today in Monterey, a visitor to Richard MacDonald’s Studio experiences a pristine environment fi lled with light and music, where world-renowned performers stretch and chat—juggling, playing tricks, or swinging on an improvised trapeze, while artists from Europe, Asia, Russia, Canada, and Australia sculpt, watch, and learn from Richard MacDonald. Drawn by their admiration for Richard MacDonald, fascinating people from all walks of life meet and gather to exchange ideas and inspiration. Richard MacDonald has recreated the 19th century Atelier, and from this lively, working studio a collection bearing the name “Atelier” has emerged. Th e bronze sculptures of the Atelier are individually numbered, limited edition pieces, and represent some of the artist’s most memorable works. Only a few sculptures from the collection are presented in cast marble or other proprietary, contemporary media and these editions are signed and numbered. Th e Atelier collection is an organic outgrowth of Richard MacDonald’s creative life and in the tradition of sculptors from the nineteenth century, like Carrier-Beleuse and Rodin, the work of the Atelier will be allowed to fl ourish, for the enrichment of society as a whole.
