Introduction to the AVATAR® Gas and Radiation Detector Mount
The AVATAR® Gas and Radiation Detector Mount allows the user to mount
and remotely view data from the MultiRAE Pro, MultiRAE, or MultiRAE Lite
detectors mounted on the Avatar robot. Using the robot as a mobile base,
the user can navigate the detector into a hazardous scenario and collect gas
and radiation level data. The mount only supports the listed detectors.

Setup & Use Instructions
Please read the main AVATAR®III User Manual BEFORE proceeding with use of
mount. The manual was included with your robot purchase.
A) Preparing the Detector Mount
1. The mount is comprised of four pieces – a top cover, a base, a detector bracket, and a USB
bracket. First, take off the top cover by using a flat head screw driver and partially unscrewing
the smaller screws (as pictured below). There are 2 in total, located on either side of the mount.
Take off the cover and set aside.

2. The detector bracket can be positioned in 3 different configurations to accommodate
other payloads if necessary. This bracket can be moved by loosening the 4 flat head screws
on the base of the mount and sliding the bracket off, then reattaching by putting it back on
in one of the other locations on the bracket and tightening down the screws again. Decide
on one configuration and make sure the detector bracket screws are tightened down
properly. The “Fore Configuration” is the default.
Note: Make sure that the rubber bumper is always facing toward the front of the robot in
the Fore and Aft configs. It is easy to put the bracket on backwards.

3. Next to install the detector first make sure the clear plastic filter is properly attached over the gas pump input. It twists on and off. Do NOT use the detector without attaching the
filter. Note that the detector unit must be charged for >12 hours before use. Make sure
the detector is turned on and working properly before installing in the mount. Once
installed in the mount, there is no access to the power button.
FOR A FULL EXPLANATION OF HOW TO USE AND READ THE DETECTOR, PLEASE REFER TO
THE MULTIRAE USER MANUAL INCLUDED WITH THE DETECTOR.
4. Take the Travel Charger (M01-3021-000) that comes with the MultiRAE detector and plug
it into the detector. Make sure the smaller end of the USB cord is also connected.

5. Loosen both screws on the USB guard on the mount and slide the small bracket
over to the side so you can plug the USB cable into the mount. When fully plugged
in, then slide the bracket back over to hold the connector in place and retighten
down the screws.
6. Next, with the rubber straps out of the way loop the excess cable and set at the
base of the bracket and then place the detector face down on top of the cables into
the mount as shown. Again make sure the detector is ON before placing in mount.

7. Pull the straps snugly around the detector and fasten by inserting the blue buckle into the
corresponding hole on the other belt strap.
8. Once the detector is secured inside the bracket, the mount cover can be reattached. Slip
the cover over the top making sure to route the USB cable through the slot on the top
cover so it doesn’t get pinched (see above). Secure by tightening down the two flat head
screws on either side of the bracket. The mount is now ready to install on the robot.

B) Attaching the Mount onto the Robot
9. The robot must be powered off (battery removed) before taking off or putting on the
Detector Mount or any other robot payloads. Remove the payload cover off the payload bay #2 (the one closer to the antenna).
10. To install the detector on the robot, line up the large 25 pin connector on the bottom of the mount with payload alignment pins in payload bay 2. Press the detector into place on the robot and fasten the 4 large payload screws on each corner of the detector mount with a flat head screw driver. Be careful to not over tighten and strip the screw heads. If used with the PTZ, install the PTZ in payload bay 2 and the mount in payload bay 1.
