Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo

"Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" is a rock song written byRick Derringer.[1] It was first recorded in 1970 by JohnnyWinter And, Johnny Winter’s band from 1970-71, whichincluded Derringer. In 1973, Derringer recorded a soloversion and it became his only Top 40 chart hit, peakingon the BillboardHot 100 at #23. They both have recordedseveral live versions of the song and several other artistshave recorded their interpretations.

1 Johnny Winter And versions

“Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” was recorded by JohnnyWinter in 1970 with his band “Johnny Winter And”,which included Rick Derringer and other former mem-bers of The McCoys. According to Derringer, “The firstsong I wrote for Johnny was 'Rock and Roll, HoochieKoo'. 'Rock and Roll' to satisfy the rock 'n' roll that I wassupposed to be bringing into the picture, and 'HoochieKoo' to satisfy the king of blues sensibility that Johnnywas supposed to maintain. And it worked out great”.[2]However, for Winter “The reviewers liked it. I didn'tthink 'Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo' would do as wellas it did 'cause it was a little corny. Rock and Roll,Hoochie Koo. You don't ever know”.[2] The song is in-cluded on the Johnny Winter And album, which reached#154 in the Billboard 200 album chart.[3][4] In 1970, theyrecorded the song during the Live Johnny Winter Andtour, which was released as Live at the Fillmore East10/3/70 in 2010. Together they later recorded the songwithWinter’s brother for EdgarWinter’sWhite Trash live1972 album Roadwork.

2 Rick Derringer versions

In 1973, the song’s author, Rick Derringer recorded thesong for his solo debut albumAll American Boy. The songwas released as a single and reached #23 on the BillboardHot 100, making it his highest showing in the recordcharts. It has become a staple of 1970s rock music com-pilations and classic rock radio. Derringer has recordedseveral live versions of the “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo”over the years.[1] In 2012, Derringer recorded and re-leased a new version of the song with lyrics reflectinghis Christian beliefs. Titled “Read The Word And LiveIt Too,” the song also credited a “Big D” for the rappedverses.

3 Other versions and appearances

In 1975, a live performance of “Rock and Roll, HoochieKoo” by Van Halen was recorded, although it is offi-cially unreleased.[5] Suzi Quatro recorded the song forher 1978 album If You Knew Suzi.... Dutch band Livin'Blues was recorded live and studio versions of “Rock andRoll, Hoochie Koo” in 70s, which were released on reis-sued albums “Live'75” (1975) and “Blue Breeze” (1976)as bonus. Canadian funk/rock band Bootsauce coveredthe song on their 1993 album Sleeping Bootie. Superflyincluded it on their albums My Best of My Life (2009)and Wildflower & Cover Songs: Complete Best 'Track 3'(2010).Derringer’s solo version of “Rock and Roll, HoochieKoo” has appeared in several films,[6] including The Spiritof '76 (1990), Rush (1991), Dazed and Confused (1993),Stag (1997), and What a Girl Wants (2003). The songis available as a downloadable track for the music videogame Guitar Hero III Mobile and a cover version is fea-tured in the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II.[6]

Derringer played the song live with the 11th Ringo Starr& His All-Starr Band in the November 2011 tour. Theband also features Edgar Winter.Derringer recorded a new version of the song in 1987withWorld Wrestling Federation announcer “Mean Gene”Okerlund for the second WWF album, Piledriver. Der-ringer also performed in the song’s music video alongsideOkerlund and Hulk Hogan.A version was recorded by Kenny Wayne Shepherd andEdgar Winter for the CD Les Paul & Friends: AmericanMade World Played (2005)In 2008, the Los Angeles based metal band My Ruin,covered the song on their 2008 UK tour.[7] The song wascaptured on film and the band released the video officiallyvia their YouTube profile in March 2009.[8]

Joe Lynn Turner released a cover of this song in the albumUnder Cover 2 in 1999.Albert Järvinen Finnish guitarist released a cover of thissong on hes single: Albert Järvinen Bronx – Rock'n'RollHoochie Koo/Into The Blues/Fenderal. Albert Järvinenis famous from the band called: Hurriganes
