Collaboration with Private Sectors:Gaps between Research Laboratory and IndustryTechnology in laboratory is not always usable in industry. Technical training, Collaboration research are important to transfer know-how and to develop applied technology. AIST started Collaboration research for utilizing IP.
-
How can we improve our ability to create IP and promote Collaboration ?

Technology Transfer from AIST
-
Technology Transfer by former AIST(1) Glucose IsomerazeThis enzyme makes fructose from glucose. The patent was licensed in Japan, US and Germany, and earned 14 million US$. AIST was founded as a bureau of ministry of commerce & industry in 1948, integrating laboratory under the ministry. ETL MKIIIFirst transistor computer in the world, developed in 1956, led Japanese computer industry.
-
Technology Transfer by former AIST(2) Poly-acrylo-nitril (PAN) based carbon fiberCarbon reinforced plastics are widely used for golf club shafts, fishing rods and aerospace base.Transparent conductive filmsIndium oxide thin film by vacuum deposition process, is used for liquid crystal displays and also applied to anti-icer of shields for bullet train.AIST provided new technology to industry and support Japanese economic growth in the latter half of 20th century.

Many of technology in a laboratory can not be used in factory, even if people want to use the technology as it is.We should transfer know-how in the course of technical training in order to show how to apply in the industry . And in some cases, we need to collaborate with companies to develop applied technology for manufacturing. In the year 2001, the new AIST established Patent policy and Technology-transfer policy. And we made some rules for managing IP in accordance with policies.AIST Innovations makes licensing agreements by steps negotiating with companies and disclosing confidential information related to the IPRs.In some cases, collaboration research are needed to develop applied technology. The IP Department can spend some budget for the collaboration research for utilizing IPRs.
Former AIST was founded in 1948 as a industrial science research laboratory of the government. It conducted science research to catch up with the technology of industrialized country. Former AIST provided new technology to industry and supported Japanese economic growth in the latter half of 20th century. Our royalty revenue has increased fortunately since we started New AIST.We do not think our Technology Transfer system is completed. We should learn more and improve out technology transfer system.
