FRANCE AND EUROPEAN UNION

One of the founding fathers of European unity was the statesman Robert Schuman. He was a qualified lawyer. Between 1948 and 1952 he was French foreign minister. In cooperation with Jean Monnet he drew up the internationally renowned Schuman Plan. He proposed joint control of coal and steel production, the most important materials for the armaments industry. His Plan was published on 9 May 1950. This date is regarded as the birth of European Union.

„The six states signed the agreement for the European Coal and Steel Community in Paris in April 1951. In this way, Europe began as a peace initiative.”

Robert Schuman was also President of the European Parliament between 1958-1960.

HISTORY OF FRANCE

The Celtic Gauls arrive in France in 700-500BC. In 58-50BC Roman Emperor Julius Caesar defeats the Gauls in 58-50 BC and France becomes part of the Roman Empire until 476AD. During the Middle Age, Charles I (Charlemagne), the Kings of the Franks, united most of Western Europe and laid the foundations for modern France and Germany. In 768 he took the Frankish throne and in 774 became King of Italy. In 800 he became the first Holy Roman Emperor - the first recognized Roman emperor in Western Europe since the collapse of the Western Roman Empire three centuries earlier. The expanded Frankish state created by Charles I is called the Carolingian Empire.

The Hundred Years’ War was a series of conflicts waged from 1337 to 1453 between Kingdom of England and Kingdom of France in order to control of the latter Kingdom. Joan of Arc is considered a French heroine of this war and a Roman Catholic saint.

Louis XIV (5 September 1638 – 1 September 1715), known as Louis the Great (Louis le Grand) or the Sun King (le Roi-Soleil), was a monarch who ruled as King of France from 1643 until his death. His reign lasted 72 years and 110 days.

French was ruled by kings for many centuries until the storming of the Bastille during the French Revolution in 1789. Then Napoleon becomes Emperor of the French Republic until he is sent to exile.
