Summer, 2010

Dear Residents:

Wow! Be careful what you wish for! We’d hoped for some freezing weather on a few consecutive days so the Roselle Park District could bring ice skating back to Turner Pond this past winter. Mother Nature cooperated and then some! For 24 of 31 days in January the green “all clear” fl ag was waving proudly. Kudos to our Parks Department for engineering their own mini-zamboni...otherwise known as a riding lawn mower minus the mower deck, plus rotating brooms. Who’d have thought we’d be shoveling so much snow off the ice? We could not get enough of seeing so many people taking advan-tage of this new, yet traditional, fun in Roselle.

Yours truly fi nally kept a New Year’s resolution longer than a week by spending some quality time in our newly renovated Fitness Center. Hey, folks, if I can get into this, ANYBODY can. Plus, the van-tage point atop my favorite stair master machine off ers a wonderful view of so many residents happily coming and going from our facility. Your tax dollars at work and people are looking and feeling better because of it.

Youth baseball and adult softball will soon be in full swing again, and the smell of chlorine will waft from our very own Kemmerling Pool....

We’re looking forward to new special events at the Pool this summer including an Aqua Volleyball Tournament, a concert “at the pool,” the Senior Splash Bash and an 8th Grade Graduation Party. Get your pool pass early...the best deal in town!

Our staff can’t wait to kick off our revamped kids’ summer camp format, Camp Laugh-A-Lot! *New for 2010* 2 and 3 day per week options. Look for details on Counselor-in-Training and a Teen Travel Camp for those too old for camp, but too young to work or drive. All wonderful opportunities for aff ordable local summer fun.

Our theme this year is “having a ball in your own backyard.” Start off the season at our Spring Family Fun Fest May 15 at Turner Pond, and keep checking our website, www.roselleparkdistrict.com for more ideas as the summer goes on. Th ere’s a new dog park event in the works and a night out in early August that very well could include a duck race.

We encourage you to join us this season in taking advantage of all the Roselle Park District has to off er -- a great place to work and play!

Roselle Racers Swim Team (MR)New and returning swimmers are invited to join the Roselle Racers Swim Team for a fun-fi lled summer at the newly improved Kemmerling Pool! Kemmerling Pool is conveniently located here in town at Prospect and Bryn Mawr Avenue. Many swimmers may be able to walk or ride their bike to those early morning practices!

The Roselle Racers are a member of the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference. This competi-tive swimming program is designed for swimmers 5-18 years old. Swimmers age 8 and under must be able to swim one length of the pool without stopping and swimmers 9 and over must be able to swim two lengths. Swimmers compete against individuals in their own age group. New team members attend a swimming tryout before they can be on the team. The tryout dates will be announced at registration.

REGISTRATION: Registration night for the Roselle Racers Swim Team will be held at the Clauss Recreation Center (CRC) on April 13, 2010 and April 21, 2010 from 6-8 pm. Members of the swim team parent club will be present to provide information and answer questions. A special fi rst time swimmer/parent informational meeting will be held 6pm to 6:30 pm each of those nights. Swim team suits and other attire will be available for viewing, fi tting and ordering. If you can not make the registration night, you may still join by completing a registration form at the CRC front desk by June 8. Practice and meet times will be announced at the Registration Nights. If you have any ques-tions, check out the Racers website at www.roselleracers.org.

Being a member of swim team requires attending practices regularly. These practices help swimmers develop fundamental swimming skills, including four diff erent competitive swim strokes. Practices also involve endurance training which is great cardiovascular exercise! Swim meets take place on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings with a fantastic social network of families volunteering to ensure their success. The swim team is a great way to make friends and get fi t!

Shotokan Karate Program (VO)Through a variety of fun and creative activities, young children (5+) and adults will develop coordination, strength, and personal safety skills in a well-supervised setting. The self-assurance gained through Shotokan Karate helps foster a strong, positive self-im-age. The mental aspect involved in karate builds self-confi dence, control, and discipline. The physical aspect of this program is both enjoyable and benefi cial. Our program will give your child the lead she/he needs in developing memory and agility skills necessary to be successful in school and other sports, while improving overall muscle tone. Karate is ideal for adults as it releases tension and develops cardiovascular fi tness.

All classes are taught by instructors of the Illinois Shotokan Karate Club under the direction of John DiPasquale (6th degree black belt), four time National Champion, former U.S. team member, Karate National Coach, and National Faculty Member of ACEP (American Coaching Eff ectiveness Program). Classes are available in our area on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

Anyone interested in tennis lessons and league play can stop by the Clauss Recreation Center for a list of classes or visit our website at www.roselleparkdistrict.com. We can also fax and e-mail informa-tion in regards to a description of classes off ered along with dates, times, and fees. Give us a call at 630-894-4200!

Fall Soceer League

Emphasis in the Mid-Suburban Soccer League is placed on individual instruction, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Teams will be based on approximately 12 to 15 players per roster depending on age groups. Waiting lists will be used until there are enough players and a volunteer head coach to form another team. Games are played on Saturdays against neighboring park districts. Competition will start September 11. Practices will be held during the week based on coach’s availability. Practices will start two weeks prior to game play dependent upon securing enough volunteer coaches. Parents will receive a call from their child’s coach once the team selection process is completed. Registering before the August 2 deadline does not necessarily guarantee a spot on a team due to maximum numbers established to form a team. The number of teams competing this fall out of the Roselle Park District is to be submitted to league offi cials on August 4 for scheduling purposes. It is imperative to register prior to that date! Registrations will be accepted on a fi rst come, fi rst serve basis.

Volunteer coaches are always needed for this program. Please indicate on enrollment form if you would be able to manage a team. Also, please let our front desk staff know if you would be interested in coaching. If you are not familiar with the game of soccer, don’t worry, we can teach you everything you need to know.

W.O.W. Women on Weights (TL)Strength training has been proven to benefi t all populations, from adolescent athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremen-dous benefi ts from strength training. Traditionally, women relied on cardiovascular activity and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets merely punish the soul and decrease the metabolism. Without including consistent strength training in our program, eff ecting change can be an impos-sible goal. Strength training is absolutely essential if we wish to create visual changes in our bodies, and we’ve discovered that the benefi ts of strength training extend far beyond the visual.

Goose Lake Park Disc- Golf Course

The concept of the game is easier to understand when the term ‘Frisbee® golf’ is used, but since Frisbee is a registered trademark, we call the game disc golf instead. The game is similar to traditional ball golf. Players use special Frisbees (golf discs) instead of balls and clubs, and throw them at an above-ground target instead of a hole in the ground. The object of the game is to throw a golf disc into the target, ‘par’ or better, i.e., in the fewest number of throws. The com-bination of challenges to players, including distance, accuracy, wind, trees, shrubbery, water and terrain changes, off er plenty of action and excitement during the course of a game. It is not possible for the District to perform the service of providing cash back or in-system credit on any overwritten personal checks, company checks, government-issue checks, or money orders.

In Case of an Oops!

Complete details of program policies, procedures and guidelines are sometimes omitted from the program brochures because of space limitations. Also, errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur as well. We apologize for any errors that may appear in the brochure. We thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise.

SUMMER 2010

Nothing ruins a good program quicker…

than everyone waiting until the last minute to register for it. There is a point where if there aren’t enough registrants to hold the program, it is cancelled. Coming in the day of, or the day before the program won’t resurrect it. Please register at least a week early to avoid disappointment.

Registration will continue until

classes are fi lled or cancelled due to low enrollment (at the discretion of the corresponding Recreation Supervisor).

ResidencyNot all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another park district. Therefore, proof of residency is required when registering for programs for the fi rst time. This may be done with a driver’s license, utility bill, (or a mortgage statement for those who are recently moving to the area).Roselle Park District residents support the district through property tax contributions and therefore these residents have fi rst priority in the registration process each program period.

Returned Check PolicyWe gladly accept personal checks as payment. If, for any reason, a check is returned to our offi ce marked “NSF,” we will contact you. You will then be required to submit a full cash or money order payment, as well as a $30 bookkeeping fee, within a fi ve business day period. Class privileges will be suspended and new registration will not be accepted until payment is received.

All refund requests must be made at least two business days before the fi rst class meeting or practice of program. Trips and special events require reservations and planning weeks ahead of time and therefore do not allow us to accept refund requests unless there is a wait list and someone can fi ll the spot. Individuals requesting refunds with two or more business days notice, prior to the fi rst class meeting or practice will receive a full refund, less $5 for administrative costs. No refunds will be issued for any program after second meeting of a program, unless a physician’s note is provided. Re-fund requested for medical reasons will be prorated from the time the request is received.

Non Resident FeesUnless specifi ed by a particular program, the non-resident program fee is an additional $15 or 50% of the regular fee, whichever is less. This does not apply to facility rentals. For all facility rentals, CRC or Turner Park, there is a consistent $25 increase for non-residents in addition to the stated resident fees.

Roselle Park District

and the ADAThe Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability. The Roselle Park District will make reasonable accommodations in recreation programs to enable participation by an individual with a disability that meets essential eligibility requirements for that leisure program and facilities. If you have questions or believe you have been unfairly discriminated against by the park district, please contact the Roselle Park District Director of Parks & Recreation at (630) 894-4200 ext. 228. Those who use the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf may reach the park district by calling (800) 526-0844.

Wait List ProcessA wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait list is designed to maintain interested people in a holding area until more spaces in the program are available, someone drops out or transfers or a new section is added by park district staff based on interest. The wait list is maintained based on the order we process registrations. Customers will be contacted for confi rmation before being added to one of our wait lists (or transferred from a wait list into the desired program) by the front desk or specifi c program supervisor. Please note: before a participant is transferred into a program all corresponding paperwork and payments are required..

What about insurance? The Roselle Park District does not provide medical coverage for injuries suff ered while participating in park district programs, or while using park facilities. The park district, therefore, cannot assume responsibility for personal injury for persons participating in a recreation program or using facilities. Patrons are advised to make provisions for this coverage in their own personal insurance program.
