Dear fellow Rotarians, Happy New Rotary Year and may peace be with us !

As we start another year of service, we are again hoping and striving to give justice to our motto of Service Above Self. RI President Tanaka in announcing the theme for this year, “Peace Through Service”, is simply stressing that whatever we do for Rotary, no matter how simple or grand, will lead to peace in our home, community and the world.

Let us then be guided and be inspired by these thoughts. Let us focus on serving our community, which is the main reason why we joined Rotary. To be more relevant and to make more impact, RI has told us to start our year with strategic planning. We need to put more careful understanding of the needs of our customers, more creative thinking in solving these needs, a deeper assessment of our resources and a more dedicated and participative implementation of our service projects. We are also told to plan for the next three years.

For our clubs to remain preeminent in our respective communities, we have to follow the lead of Rotary International.

To the Peace Builder Presidents and District Officers, congratulations on your assumption to office. Let us keep our mandate to lead our fellow Rotarians in achieving Peace Through Service. Let us take advantage of this opportunity to be of greater service to our fellow men. Let us be the guiding light in all our endeavors.

Our year will not be all work. Your District leadership will provide a lot of opportunities for fellowship. Our sports program will continue and so with the other social activities. After all, Rotary started as a fellowship club. Participate and enjoy all these activities, not only for the fun and camaraderie, but the opportunity to meet fellow Rotarians in the District.

Spouse Glo joins me in wishing that we will all have an exciting, fruitful and enjoyable year of Peace Through Service.

It is expected that, by this time, all the Peace Builder Presidents should have received their club’s copies of the SAR from RI, which were sent to our district office and distributed since the presidents’ assembly on July 7, 2012. These SAR, which can also be seen thru members access of RI, will be the reference for the clubs’ starting point of membership this Rotary Year. All clubs are reminded that new members inducted should be reported to RI by the club presidents thru the member access immediately. Regular monitoring will be made by the District Membership Committee to avoid problem. All Rotarians are encouraged to pay attention to all the RI Awards available throughout the Rotary Year. There are deadlines for nominations to be received by RI, that is why the district office will set respective deadlines of accepting local nominations by any club before District Governor Lirio evaluates and submits the qualified nominations to RI. For more information, please visit our website, “www.rotarians.district3800.org”. For immediate nomination, we need to receive any qualified nominee for the “RI Service Above Self” award before August 15, 2012. This is a very prestigious award from RI for any qualified Rotarian. We should honor our deserving Rotarians by nominating them to RI. The District Nominating Committee (DNC) is about to be formed this year. District Governor Lirio has already circulated the call for nominees from qualified clubs. In order that our district will be able to have a good selection team for a deserving District Governor Nominee, all qualified clubs must nominate a past president who is more familiar in our district affairs. Please take note of the submission deadline. We do hope that the most qualified candidate for a next Governor position in our district will be chosen by a well-rounded DNC team that will be formed this year.

It was a glittery evening for R.I. District 3800 as the Peace Builder Team led by District Governor Lirio Sandoval gathered on June 29, 2012 at the Bayanihan Center, Pasig City, for the District Handover and Induction Ceremonies hosted by RC Marikina South.

Majestic Governor Rafael “Raffy” Garcia III thanked and congratulated the Majestic Presidents

and District Officers during his Valedictory Address. DG Lirio and DGL Gloria together with their children and grandchildren were then presented by

Secretary General Augusto “Augie” Soliman. This was followed by the induction of DG Lirio with PDG Eduardo “Edi” Chua CK as Inducting Officer. PDG Edi was also the one who inducted DG Lirio as member of RC Marikina Central in 1989 and provided guidance to him in his journey in Rotary.

In his Inaugural Address, DG Lirio thanked IPDG Raffy for clearing the path for him to trailblaze in other aspects of the way Rotarians do things in Rotary. Per DG Lirio, “In this world, nothing is permanent except change. We have to adapt to the developments happening in Rotary and in this world. Some of these changes, I already announced during the District Assembly, and I need not repeat them now. What is important is that we Rotarians should be able to accept them and proceed from there. The road to resistance is sometimes easier but for us to be more successful and become more relevant we should embrace change. Tradition has a part in our life and we must respect it but it should just remain a part of our life if circumstances warrant it.”

With all the training sessions that the Peace Builder Presidents attended, he is confident that the clubs they lead will achieve all their plans and objectives for this Rotary Year.

The occasion glittered all the more with the presence of DG Lirio’s colleagues in the book industry with whom he worked with for a long time in his roles as President of BDAP, including his high school classmates, close friends and associates, past and future District Governors, his brother and sister.

DG Lirio and the Peace Builder Team are now ready to SERVE FOR PEACE!

It was a well-attended training seminar with 85 presidents-elect and 64 secretaries-elect coming from Zone 1 to Zone 8 of the Rotary Club network. Everyone was in high spirits, as one of the delegates jokingly looked for a shot of whisky during registration.

The seminar started promptly at 8:00 a.m. with discussions and breakout sessions on the topics of ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, WORKING WITH THE DISTRICT, CLUB ADMINISTRATION, MEMBERSHIP, SERVICE PROJECTS AND ROTARY FOUNDATION conducted by PP Tomas ”Tom” B. Rocamora, PP Alfredo “Buboy” M. Campos, PP Bienvenido “Jun” C. Angeles, PDG Fabio “Fabie” J. Enriquez, CP Manuel “Manny” R. Reyes, and PDG Marcos “Mac” C. Hermoso, respectively. These discussions were as intellectually filling as the breakfast, lunch and merienda that were served.

With the first day sessions still going on, the host, Rotary Club of Marikina East, was already busy with the preparations for the second part of the training seminar scheduled the following Saturday, March 10, 2012.

If the first day of the training program was successful, the second and concluding portion held at the same venue was even better with a huge turn-out of almost 200 presidents-elect, secretaries-elect, assistant governors and district officers.

Discussions and breakout sessions on topics like the ROLE OF SECRETARIES, ON-LINE COMMUNICATION TOOLS, PUBLIC IMAGE, GOAL SETTING AND RESOURCES, were brewing from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., this time by renowned and seasoned resource speakers such as SG Augusto “Augie” C. Soliman, PP Joselito “Joel” M. Guevarra, PP Ferdinand Dindo “Dindo” C. Santos, PP Dolores “Dodie” F. Cheng, PP Anthony “Tonipi” N. Parungao, PP Roberto “Bobby” F. Rosadia, and unselfishly sharing his Dale Carnegie knowledge, PP Bienvenido “Doods” S. Policarpio.

After the exhausting but intellectually stimulating discussions and learning wins, it was time for the Rotarians to party.

The fellowship started at 7:00 p.m. with over 100 Rotarians enjoying each other’s company over dinner. The evening was made more exciting raffles, with prizes ranging from San Miguel Beer tower to digital cameras, sing-along, parlor games, dancing and definitely a lot of drinking.

The day officially ended at 12 midnight while others still stayed on.

Surely, everyone will be eager for the next PESETS with this last one as a benchmark.

By Rtn. Karen Javier, RC Marikina East

R.I. DISTRICT 3800 HOLDS SEAMLESS SEMINAR By PP Jovie Sison, RC San Juan

It was a 3 for 1 event, interpreted; “Three seminars in one afternoon” or “Three seminars for the price of one.” Hosted by the Rotary Club of San Juan and the Rotary E-club of San Juan 3800, held at the historic Kalayaan Hall of Club Filipino, 209 delegates from District 3800 (43 Peace Builder Presidents) experienced its first Seamless Seminar in what normally would have been three separate sessions (each charging participants PHP 300 per seminar) was offered all together for just PHP 300. What a bargain!

Three Past District Governors from three other Rotary Districts were resource speakers namely: (speaker and their topic) PDG Ursula “Chit” Lijauco, D3820, Public Image; PDG Rolando “Oyan” Villanueva,

D3790, Membership; PDG Roberto “Bobby” Viray,

D3790, The Rotary Foundation – all Coordinators of their special fields for their respective district – all high calibre speakers, all in one afternoon. What a deal!

The room was packed, the food sumptuous (everyone had their fill), and there were raffle prizes donated by the generous Rotarians of D3800. That’s value for money!

In summary, the event organizers who were then incoming district officers (DG Lirio Sandoval, SG Au-gie Soliman, DSG Danilo Santos, PP Gina Sanchez, PDG Pepe Peralta) ascertained that participants learned about the three important Rotary subjects, were fed well, immensely entertained, and went home smiling. Now that’s Service Above Self!

On July 7, 2012, Saturday, RI District 3800 under the helm of Peace Builder Governor Lirio Sandoval, held its First Dinner Meeting and Fellowship Night at the Renaissance Hotel Ballroom, Riverbanks, Marikina City. Cluster 2, composed of Zones 4 and 6 of RI District 3800, hosted this event.

This meeting was a sort of innovation of our previous breakfast meetings wherein this time, fellow-ship and camaraderie were highlighted in order to strengthen the bond between the Peace Builder Presidents

Our seasoned Project Chairmen and speakers successfully and concisely discussed the assigned topics for the business meeting. Simultaneously, our spouses held their meeting at the 2nd floor of the Riverbend Hotel Café presided by District Governor Lady, Glo Sandoval.

Dancing, raffle and parlor games added to the fun and excitement of this memorable evening. Rotarians and spouses of RI District 3800 are now looking forward to the next Dinner Meeting and Fellowship night to be hosted by Cluster 1.

CELEBRATING THE NEW ROTARY YEAR WITH SPECIAL CHILDREN by PP Carla R. Dejeres, RC Metro Marikina

Photos courtesy of Pres. Ricky Cinco, RC Metro Marikina

The most unforgettable part of the program was the showcase of talents of the beneficiaries. Visually impaired children sang solo and in groups while a child with Down syndrome proved that her condition will not stop her from rendering a very entertaining dance number. Some of the beneficiaries even requested the Rotarians to take their pictures to show how happy they are with the visit and the treats.

In celebration of the New Rotary Year, the Rotary Club of Metro Marikina led by Pres. Ricky Cinco together with District Governor Lirio Sandoval held a Program for Special Children at the Barangka Elementary School in Marikina City on July 2, 2012. The seventy (70) beneficiaries with visual impairments, developmental disabilities, mental illness, learning problems, and behavioural challenges were treated with snacks and provided with loot bags containing educational materials like pencils, sharpeners, papers, notebooks, coloring books, and crayons.

RC VALENZUELA’S MULTIMEDIA CLASSROOM PROJECT By PP Benjamin Ngo, RC Valenzuela

Computer classrooms of today are not only considered as high technology, with high cost, high maintenance but also requires specialized training for the teachers. Although computers have a niche in education, these equipment reach only few children in our school systems. In the last ten years, our elementary schools have been gifted with CDs and DVDs by various agencies covering subjects like Anatomy, Science, Botany, English, Singing, and Astronomy, among others. But until now, these CDs and DVDs are only kept in storage, gather-ing dust, lacking the delivery system for our ele-mentary classrooms.

Enter the multimedia classroom kit now being installed in Valenzuela City elementary schools by the local Rotary Clubs complete with a large screen LCD television mounted on the class wall, 1 computer with DVD/RW plus USB inputs, keyboard, mouse, with a large amplified stereo speaker system, combining USB, FM Radio, and SD card inputs. It is a fraction of the cost of a computer classroom but definitely more effective. Whether the teaching format is a karaoke for the younger students in English or Tagalog, or an animated lecture on planetary bodies for the older grade levels, the multimedia classroom reaches more students and enhances learning for the entire student body. Imagine the teaching benefits of being able to pause a presentation to be able to

make clarifications or answer students’ questions. Teachers can even develop their own formats on media outside the school or at home and bring the finished packages to present to their class. For the creative and dedicated teaching professional, this will be a comprehensive and wonderful tool.

A total of 15 schools benefitted from this project and these are: Malinta Elementary School, Pio Valenzuela Elementary School, Tugatog Elementary School, Canumay West Elementary School, Santiago de Guzman Elementary School, Coloong Elementary School, Pasolo Elementary School, Isla Elementary School, Paso de Blas Elementary School, Sitio Rosario Elementary School, Mapulang Lupa Elementary School, Valenzuela Science Elementary School, A. Fernando Elementary School, Karuhatan Elementary School, and Mapulang Lupa National High School. The project started under the term of IPP Prac Nelson and is continued by Pres. Robert Nelson.

A huge number of participants attended the said event. The program started with the inspiring message of District Governor Lirio Sandoval. After his speech, the Rotaractors had their picture taken with DG Lirio. The next presenter is New Generation Chairman PP Manny E. Tamayo from the Rotary Club of Pasig. He tackled RAC-100 (DRACOM). He gave us ample time to prepare for the DRACOM since this is the highest activity of the District for Rotaractors. In RAC-200 he said that the Zones and District are tasked to host Rotaract Discon 2012. The said Discon will be under the supervision of the District Rotaract Committee in collaboration with the Rotary Clubs. In RAC-300, each zone is required to do a midyear report. After PP Manny’s presentation, the participants enjoyed the flaming and sumptuous lunch.

The program resumed at exactly 1:00 pm. PDRR Wheng Tejada introduced the guest speaker, President Jonjon Salarzon from the Rotary Club of Rodriguez who discussed “Protocol and Decorum”. Prior to the said discussion, he gave some tips on how one should introduce himself or herself in front of fellow Rotaractors, Rotarians, and guests. The Rotaractors listened intently to Pres. Jonjon. This was followed by the presentation of PDRR Erwin Macam of RI D3810 who tackled the Roles and Responsibility of a Club President. Thereafter, PDRR Cathy Gonzales from RI District 3830 conducted an activity which is related to her topic, “Project Documentation and Presentation for the Secretaries”. The event concluded with a message from DRR Clarisse Felix and distribution of Certificates to all the Rotaractors who attended.
