The history of Nadine Salembier’s company dates back to 1962 when she opened her first beauty parlour in Belgium. 10 years later the Nadine Salembier brand of products, based on her first-hand knowledge of the beauty requirements of her clients, was launched. In 2000, Princess Mathilde of Belgium selected Nadine Salembier beauty salons for beauty treatments and relaxation therapy and Nadine became the princess’s official beauty and wellness adviser. In November 2013, Queen Mathilde appointed Nadine Salembier as the “Official Supplier to the Court of Belgium”. After the success of a leading men's shower gel re-launch in Europe in 2011, RPC Zeller Plastik Shanghai has employed a novel moulding technology in China to produce a custom disc top closure, ideal for hair care and skin care applications. The two-piece disc top closure is produced using in-mould assembly technology that enables two parts to be assembled in a single mould. This means that the overall manufacturing process complexity is reduced: with one single machine, each cycle produces a finished part in a higher quality. The custom disc top closure has been designed to satisfy leading personal care brands in Asia. Easy to open and close, thanks to its one-hand dispensing, its rounded shape and glossy finish also create an elegant appearance and eye-catching appeal, ensuring on-shelf differentiation. This latest development demonstrates the group’s ability to bring its global know-how to local markets, enabling each of its factories to industrialise projects efficiently with high quality standards that ensure cutting edge technologies are available to customers around the world. In the past decade the company has strengthened its position as a key player in China with a leading role in the personal care and household markets. RPC ZELLER PLASTIK SHANGHAI DELIVERS AN EXCEPTIONAL SHOWER EXPERIENCE BPI is a leading manufacturer and supplier of polythene films for a diverse range of end markets, including agriculture and horticulture, construction, industrial, healthcare and waste services, and retail food and non-food. BPI has a proven reputation for new product development, and is one of Europe’s largest recyclers of waste polythene films. Sectors where the company enjoys market leadership include silage stretch films and sheet, form fill seal films and industrial, food and drink packaging. The arrival of BPI increases the range of polymer conversion technologies within RPC, and has provided an excellent strategic opportunity to acquire an established business within the European polythene films sector, with strong market positions. The deal also provides an ideal fit with a key element of RPC’s Vision 2020 growth strategy for selective consolidation in Europe. Both businesses have a strong focus on innovation and complementary knowledge and expertise. Like RPC, BPI’s broad portfolio of customers across a wide range of market sectors and geographical regions enables it to service both large global blue- chip companies and smaller local players. “We are delighted to welcome BPI into the RPC Group,” comments RPC Chief Executive Pim Vervaat. “The additional technologies that we can now offer customers confirm our position as one of the world’s leading plastics design and engineering companies with the widest range of technologies to meet the specific needs of a large number of end markets.” The enlarged RPC Group has a turnover in excess of £2.5bn with over 20,000 employees, operating from over 140 sites in 29 countries. BPI will form a separate, sixth, division within the company. The innovative pack solution is being used for a new selection in Orkla’s Denja range including shrimps, beans, chicken or beetroot. Two different technologies and two different resin materials (PET and PP) have been brought into play to create the convenient and lightweight pack. PLASTIC BOTTLE IS A NATURAL FITA custom-moulded bottle from RPC Promens Consumer Llantrisant is ensuring that a new range of healthy, probiotic drinks stands out on-shelf.London-based Plenish is using the 330ml PET bottle from RPC to pack all three fl avours – Lime Cucumber, Pineapple Ginger and Blueberry Pear – of its organic Water+ range. The fi rst non-dairy probiotic drink on the market, it promotes sugar-free hydration and a healthy gut and immune system.

The clear RPC bottle creates a strong on-shelf impression, with an aura both svelte and imposing. Its understated curves merge into a large area that is ideal for eye-catching labels.

“We designed this bottle shape to fi t in with our existing range of cold press juices that come in 250ml and 500ml, and we’re really happy that RPC could turn it into a reality,” comments Amanda Grace, Operations and Supply Chain Manager at Plenish.

The 'WATER+' range from Plenish is a simple, convenient way to start a detox period or healthy eating plan. It may benefi t customers who feel bloated after eating, want to lose weight, or are addicted to caffeine or sugary or fried foods.

“RPC were great to deal with,” concludes Amanda. “They were even able to work with their tooling partner to reduce our lead-

time and provide the bottles ready for our nationwide launch. We wouldn’t hesitate to work with them again in the future.”

The unique Multitainer is also UN approved as a combined pack for the carriage of hazardous goods.

Available in fi ve and 10 litre sizes, Multitainer comprises a transparent LDPE container within a cardboard outer. This combination provides a wide area for high-impact branding while reducing overall transport costs, as the container uses up to 75% less plastic than a rigid alternative and takes up less space on a pallet – with 540 fi ve litre and 360 10 litre Multitainers per pallet.

The lightweight pack also offers easy handling and excellent pouring control for end users, including full discharge of the contents with no glugging. Standard neck sizes are 31mm and 45mm.

A variety of accessories, such as taps, screw caps with tamper evidence and jolly adaptors, can be specifi ed, enabling the Multitainer to be adapted to precise customer requirements.

POT HELPS BABY FOOD’S NEW KID ON THE BLOCKThe convenience and barrier properties of RPC Superfos’s injection moulded SuperLock® polypropylene pot have proved the ideal solution for a new range of readymade organic baby foods now on shelf in major supermarkets in Sweden.Lovemade™ is the brainchild of Silvia Wulff, a Danish entrepreneur and mother of two. The eight varieties in the range are locally produced, which is unique in this category, and her team includes two Danish celebrity chefs, vouching for the high-quality ingredients, high level taste and texture.

Silvia Wulff opted for the SuperLock® packaging solution, holding 215 ml of product with a 95 mm diameter lid, which she considers to be part of the success. From her own experience, she knows how irritating it can be to feed a baby if the food container is too narrow:

“In terms of giving parents an ease-of-use experience the diameter is important,” she explains. “The SuperLock® pot is the right size, making it easy to stir, get a spoon in and the baby food out. Add to this the click-on screw-off lid makes it hassle-free to open and reclose the pot.”

The barrier labels of the SuperLock® pot provide a long shelf life, enabling the products to be placed in retail stores under ambient temperatures alongside competing products sold in glass. While the market for baby food is generally dominated by glass packaging, Silvia Wulff believes her pack solution has all the properties she requires:

“Plastic has low weight which means reduced transportation costs and reduced environmental impact. I also appreciate the fact that SuperLock® is suitable for autoclaving, so we can ensure suitable shelf life and at the same time deliver pure and natural products, avoiding the need for additives or preservatives. In addition, the pot can be re-used at home multiple times, which adds value to our product.”

The eye-catching artwork design of the labels adds to Lovemade’s™ on-shelf appeal, while the base of the pack is

A natural, safe and versatile craft material designed to nurture children’s creativity, PlayMais® is made of maize, water and food colouring. It allows for simple fun creating colourful collages or 3D shapes and fi gurines, and because it is easy to use – requiring only a dash of water and a gentle squeeze to make pieces of it stick together – it is suitable for even very small children.

Now, in the SuperLift® pail from RPC Superfos, it is becoming increasingly popular not just in Europe, but in overseas markets like Japan, Brazil and the United States.

The eye-catching and attractive injection-moulded polypropylene SuperLift® is semi-transparent, allowing customers to see the contents, and beautifully decorated in vivid colours using the In-Mould labelling technique. Thanks to its handle, customers can easily pick it up from the store display on the way to the cash register, and once bought, the empty pail can also be used for storing toys in the playroom.

Alexandra Farin, from the Purchase Department at Loick Biowertstoffe GmbH, is pleased with the recent market development: "At the beginning, we used the SuperLift® plastic pail for occasional promotional campaigns, but then we could clearly see that the plastic pail sold much better than the cardboard box we also use. Our retailers tell us that they prefer the pail because it is very popular with customers, so now we are increasingly looking at using plastic pails.

"Our business relationship with RPC Superfos is very good, and I feel extremely well-treated as their customer. In the rare case of a hurdle, the RPC Superfos team immediately makes an effort to fi nd a viable solution for us, so we truly enjoy working with them.”

Loick Biowertstoffe GmbH distributes the PlayMais® products through major toy stores including Toys R Us, Vedes and El Corte Ingles. PlayMais® is also given away as part of the kids' menu at various fast food restaurants across Germany.

RPC Protect is available for containers from 5 litres up to 25 litres in size. A 30 litre container is also currently in development. The special barrier additive, a blend of polyolefi ns and inorganic silicates, forms multiple strips on the inside of the container. Importantly, unlike other plastic barrier solutions, used containers can be recycled if appropriate.

The availability of RPC Protect enables plastic containers to be selected for an even wider range of products - including extremely hazardous items that previously could only be packed in metal - offering plastics’ traditional benefi ts of lightweight, easy handling and stacking, and reduced transportation costs.

RPC Protect containers have successfully undergone drop,

pressure and stacking tests, and their barrier properties have been proven to maintain their performance for up to a year with no reduction in the effectiveness of the barrier.

RPC Protect can be specifi ed across the majority of RPC Promens’ range of HDPE containers, giving customers the fl exibility to create family ranges with both mono and barrier versions, as well as the option for customised shapes. RPC Protect containers are FDA and EEC approved for food use, and UN certifi ed versions are also available.

AIRLESS JAR IS THE CREAM OF THE CROPThe award-winning Slidissime Quarz jar from RPC Bramlage Barcelona has been chosen by Germany-based MBR - Medical Beauty Research for its new premium face cream, BioChange® CEA.

RPC Bramlage Barcelona t +34 93 777 24 48 e [email protected]

The 50ml jar, bi-injected in PMMA with an ABS cap, combines a unique opening experience with airless technology that provides a high level of protection of the cream’s active ingredients from oxidation. The opening of the jar is located at the extremity of the innovative ‘touch and slide’ pump and closes after each dosage to avoid air-intake and drying. Equally important, users do not have to put their fi ngers into the jar.

The action and tactile fi nish of the ‘touch and slide' pump allows the cream to be released with a simple caress of the fi nger, delivering a new touch sensation for the consumer, as well as an accurate dose of product.

MBR is a high-tech premium skin care and anti-ageing brand. Its products are developed in accordance with the research of leading German dermatologists and aesthetic physicians.

“We were looking for a special jar for our new CEA product, and the innovative Slidissime has provided the ideal solution,” explains Mathias Kruse, Graphic Arts & Production at MBR. "In particular, we liked the elegant priming of the product, thanks to the slider-pump.”

Since its 2013 launch, the Slidissime jar has received three international awards.

transparent, making it possible to see the contents at the time of purchase, enabling the packaging to communicate authenticity, freshness and a healthy nutritious product.

As Silvia Wulff concludes: “Our goal is to sell a product that fully takes baby food to a higher level: organic, high-quality ingredients that are cooked following gourmet recipes, served in a safe and user-friendly pack of low weight that can be used over and over again at home.”

Silvia Wulff cooperates with the leading supplier of branded consumer goods in the Nordics, Orkla Foods Sweden.

RPC ASTRA PLASTIQUE PUTS CARREFOUR IN THE FAST LANE RPC Astra Plastique St Georges de Reneins has fi ne-tuned its Jeroboam snap-hinge standard dispensing closure to help Carrefour accelerate sales of its range of own-branded coolant and windscreen washer products.

BOWLS PROVE A SOUP-ER SOLUTION

Automotive product containers are traditionally diffi cult to handle during pouring which often leads to glugging, spills and splashes. The Jeroboam overcomes these problems thanks to several innovative design features.

Its pouring spout can be rotated to allow the container to be used in the most convenient position, making it simple to use in confi ned spaces such as the engine compartment of a car.

An effi cient anti-glug system, integrated fl ow regulator and splash-guard device ensure a constant, accurate fl ow of product and clean pouring without any spillage.

“No need for funnels, no more struggling with bulky containers to pour liquid into places which are awkward to reach,” says Mohamed Bekkar, Carrefour’s Product Development Manager Car Accessories. “Jeroboam’s in-built controlled dispensing system solves a long-standing problem in the market and makes life so much easier for consumers.”

Developed by RPC Astra Plastique, the Jeroboam’s fl ip-top pourer opens and closes with an audible click and has a patented locking device to prevent any leakage during storage or transportation.

For product security, the fl ip-top has a tamper-evident tear-off strip while the polypropylene screw-on base incorporates a

tamper-evident band on the neck of the container. The base also has a locking tab that engages with a lug on the container to prevent its removal.

RPC Astra Plastique is supplying the Jeroboam in a variety of striking colours to match Carrefour’s label graphics for greater on-shelf impact and product differentiation.

Burton’s and RPC Superfos worked very closely together not least to give the tub the distinguished and well-known purple colour as with all Cadbury products.

“We were able to attend the factory for the colour proofs which meant we could perfect the colour and tweak right until the last minute,” explains Amy Heap. “We had the colour mix adjusted a few times to make sure it was perfect - the RPC Superfos team kept the process moving and the colour turned out exactly as we wanted it to be.”

The Christmas tub was targeted towards women looking for a nice little gift for their children, family or friends. The mini-bags stay fresh inside the tub which is easy to open and re-close – a great advantage for products generally and for portion control. The artwork design depicted knitwear, snowfl akes and Santa Claus - all clearly communicating the delightful moments of Christmas.

“Retailers are defi nitely aware of the fact that consumers like to shop something special for the season,” Amy Heap concludes. “Our purple tub was attractive and suitable for the family audience.”

The popularity of ready-to-eat soups in Finland has seen strong demand for RPC Bebo Food Packaging’s extensive range of trays and bowls. The company offers a choice of over 200 different sizes and designs from 120ml to 24.4 litres, producing around 100 million units each year. The strong, lightweight and microwaveable HDPE packs combine consumer convenience and on-shelf appeal to help maximise brand image. In addition, the lightness of the material reduces transport costs while the trays are also fully recyclable.

In the Finnish market, RPC Bebo Food Packaging is currently supplying bowls to brand leader Kokkikartano for its eight soup varieties. The soups are available in all the main grocery stores throughout Finland.

SPOON IN THE LID ADVANTAGE FOR SALAD RANGEThe good looks and convenience of RPC Superfos’s EasySnacking™ pack were key factors in its selection by Lithuanian food producer Viciunai Group for a range of surimi sticks and fi sh salads.

RPC Superfos Region Central t +48 54 4291000 e [email protected]

In particular the special spoon in the lid feature of the pack makes the new VICI salads range – which includes Surimi sticks with shrimps in white sauce, Atlantic herring fi llets in a mushroom sauce and 10 other delicious varieties of surimi and herring - ideal for eating on-the-go as the perfect companion for a picnic, a trip or at work.

“We wanted a new type of pack for our new range of salads, and the 210ml EasySnacking™ appealed to us,” explains Erda Jurgaityte, Packaging Category Purchasing Manager at Viciunai Group. “The solution is completely new on our market and one of the biggest advantages of the package is the integral spoon, which is smooth and pleasant to touch.”

Like the EasySnacking™ pot, the spoon is injection moulded. Beautifully designed and in one single piece, it is a pleasure to use and very easy to grasp by removing the self-adhesive label on the top of the plastic lid. As well as its outstanding convenience and functionality, the EasySnacking™ pot is also re-closable, stable and optimised for stacking – whether fi lled or empty. The pack won the Foodservice Packaging Association Product Innovation Award and has also received a ScanStar.

The VICI salad range is available in supermarkets, petrol stations and other local stores, and as well as Lithuania, is available in Latvia, Estonia, Poland,

the Czech Republic and, in the near future, Bulgaria.

In addition, Viciunai Group is planning to launch a larger size, giving consumers the choice between a

KUTENHOLZ CELEBRATES SUPPLIER AWARD

RPC Promens Consumer Kutenholz t +49 4762 890 e [email protected]

RPC Promens Consumer Kutenholz has received the International Preferred Supplier Award from one of its major customers Homann Feinkost GmbH.This is the highest possible award that the company can bestow following its annual evaluation of all its suppliers. As in previous years, RPC Kutenholz stood out for its excellent delivery reliability and outstanding quality.

“To receive this award is a great honour for the entire Kutenholz team,” comments Key Account Manager Björn Müller. “We look forward to a continuing successful working relationship with Homann Feinkost.”

PRINTER BRINGS A NEW DIMENSION TO THE DESIGN PROCESSA £220,000 investment in new equipment – including the latest in 3D printing technology – will enable RPC Design to further enhance its new pack development services.

RPC Design t +44 1933 414855 e [email protected]

The new Connex 3 Objet 500 liquid polymer printer can print items – including a container with a label – in up to 5 litres in size and with a 0.8mm wall, enabling the early creation of physical designs for assessment and further adjustments.

In addition, the Connex is able to print prototype tooling for injection moulding, blow moulding and vacuum forming, from which a series of packs can be produced in the relevant polymer (around 100 blow moulded, 35 injection moulded and 10 vacuum formed) for compatibility and line testing.

“Speed-to-market is a vital factor in any design project,” explains RPC Design Manager Brian Lodge.

“Our 3D printer means creative concepts can very quickly be turned into physical items, allowing important decisions to be taken earlier in order to move the project to the next stage. This greatly speeds up the process of successfully getting the pack into production and on-shelf.”

RPC Design has also installed a Faro 3D scanning arm, which is able to accurately measure existing packs and convert this data

TALENT SPOTTING FOR THE NEXT GENERATIONRPC is sponsoring the 2017 Student and Schools Starpack Awards as part of its ongoing commitment to attract the next generation of packaging professionals. The awards are designed to encourage the cream of the UK's young people to consider a career in packaging design and technology, and play an important role in fostering talent within the nation's schools, colleges and universities.

Working with organisers the Packaging Society, RPC has drawn up separate project briefs for the two awards. The challenge for schools is to design a ‘fun’ soap dispenser to encourage children to wash their hands, while students are being asked to consider how to balance the sometimes confl icting demands of a takeaway pack that also meets environmental criteria.

The awards were launched at the start of the new academic year and the winners will be announced in May 2017.

“Great packaging has a major impact and makes a signifi cant

difference in many end markets,” comments RPC Design Manager Brian Lodge.

“The packaging industry has a proud heritage and it is vital that we maintain this by attracting the best new talent. We are therefore delighted to be supporting the Starpack education awards and helping to raise the profi le of packaging as a long term career choice.”

RPC’s pro-active education policy also includes a graduate entry scheme and comprehensive apprentice programmes across its sites, along with internships, school visits and work placement opportunities. The company launched its on-site Apprentice Academy at the RPC Superfos Oakham site in 2014 and opened a specialist blow moulding training facility at its RPC Promens Rushden site the following year.

The award-winning packs will be displayed in the PMMI Showcase of Packaging Innovations at the international packaging exhibition Pack Expo International in Chicago in November.

The IMDA is a trade association that represents moulders, printers, material suppliers, equipment suppliers and others committed to the development and growth of in-mould labelling and decorating products, technologies and markets. This year’s awards were the tenth since their inception.

The new designs for the company’s decorative paint range, inspired by the Irish landscape, are accompanied by an advertising campaign on TV and radio. Using the tagline "Infi nite colour from Ireland", it features an evocative voiceover by Fiona Shaw, one of Ireland's most famous actresses.

But while the artwork is new, the 10 litre injection-moulded S-range polypropylene containers from RPC Superfos have remained a constant.

Wendy Shaw, Marketing Executive at Colourtrend, explains: "We have changed the graphic design but kept the bucket, because it is user-friendly and has a lot of positive qualities. The In-Mould labelling technique ensures a brilliant look for our products, including our new logo.

"RPC Superfos did a great job in coordinating the production of our buckets with our plans for the relaunch, and smoothly facilitated delivery with the timeline of our fi lling process.”

The paint range from Colourtrend provides superior coverage and washability, and is sold in both metal cans and plastic buckets, to accommodate the different packaging requirements of the market. RPC Superfos is a long-term supplier of the plastic packs to Colourtrend.

"The RPC Superfos team has worked impeccably for Colourtrend over so many years, and the new 10 litre containers really look great,” concludes Wendy.

Colourtrend, established 60 years ago in Kildare, is Ireland's largest paint company. Its collections are available across a network of more than 140 carefully-selected paint retailers in Ireland and the UK, and the company only sells its paint through independent stockists.

Strong Sustainability Practices

ACCREDITATIONS CONFIRM POSITIVE CSR PERFORMANCE

RPC Group has underlined its commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) following two important accreditation assessments this summer. The company is now a constituent of the FTSE4Good Index and has achieved a Silver supplier sustainability recognition from EcoVadis, the global CSR ratings provider.

The FTSE4Good Index Series is designed to measure the performance of companies demonstrating strong Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices. These ESG ratings provide a multi-

dimensional measure of environmental, social and governance exposure and practice.

The EcoVadis assessment offers a collaborative platform for the measuring and monitoring of a company’s CSR performance. The customised survey provides an easy-to-understand scorecard that can be shared with all customers and clients. RPC’s Silver rating means the company is in the top 20% of surveyed companies involved in the manufacture of plastic products for environmental performance and in the top 23% overall, while across all businesses surveyed, it is in the top 27%.

“We are delighted at our success in these two major assessments,” comments RPC Group Sustainability Manager Katherine Fleet.

“Customers worldwide are seeking independent confi rmation of a business’s CSR commitment and the effectiveness of its systems and policies, which these evaluations deliver.”

GOLD AWARD FOR IML TUBSRPC Bramlage Morgantown has won a Gold Award from the In-Mould Decorating Association (IMDA) in recognition of the margarine containers it produces for Unilever.

Along with its label supplier Verstraete In-Mould Labels, the site in Morgantown, Pennsylvania accepted the honour for 'Best Product Family' at the IMDA Awards on 6th June.

RPC Bramlage Morgantown produces the high quality injection moulded margarine tubs and lids in 15oz and 80oz sizes, part of a range of seven different sized tubs for four Unilever brands. The various sizes, combined with the attractive, photographic quality of the Verstraete IML label, ensure that each brand has a unique market position.

The award comes after Unilever overhauled the designs of its tubs and lids, changing their shape from round to rectangular and moving the decoration from direct printing to in-mould labelling. The all-over coverage of the IML process attracts the eyes of the consumer and has made the tubs a commercial success story.

At the same time, RPC Bramlage Morgantown has succeeded in reducing the wall thickness of its tubs to their production limits while ensuring that they continue to be fi t-for-purpose and adhere to demanding technical specifi cations such as drop and stability tests.
