Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse

• Locations in the Midwest vs. California

Introduction• Focus for my project was to analyze and compare

the locations of Ruth’s Chris steakhouses in the Midwest and California. Also chose to take a look at our home state of Indiana!

• Why Ruth’s Chris?o Who does not love a good steak? Ruth’s Chris

is my favorite place to eat and has (in my opinion) the best steak around.

o However I was curious to analyze why there really are not many locations around our area compared to other areas.

What is Ruth’s Chris?• A luxury fine dining steak company in the US • 135 locations in the United States, Several others

internationally • Original “Chris Steak House” was founded in 1927

in New Orleans• Ruth Fertel bought company in 1965 and turned

into a business.

Ruth Fertel• Bought the restaurant in 1965

for $18,000 to hopefully pay for her children’s college

• She worked and learned every part of the business herself and sold 35 steaks on day one for $5 dollars each!

• At the beginning she hired single mothers to work her restaurant because they are “The hardest workers” according to her.

Methodology• Get addresses of all Ruth’s Chris in Midwest,

California, and Indiana • Geocode Addresses separately in ArcCatalog

o Midwest on its own (Indiana included) and California on its own

• Rematch the majority of the addresses • Enter geocoded results separately into ArcMap• ‘Select by attributes’ to create new layer for my

locations• Then clip each maps accordingly

o Clip Indiana map from my Midwest map clip

Conclusion and Theme• Analyzing these maps what is common about the

locations?• Located near major cities!

o Looking at both these maps you can see that each map features Ruth’s Chris locations that are in or near major cities

• 14 locations throughout all Midwest (8 states)• 13 in just California!

o The population of the cities/states located plays a factor.
