Alternative Sort: What Is Alike?Show sets of ten pictures at a time, and have children take turns finding two or three pictures that show things that are alike in some way without revealing to the class how they are alike. Classmates can guess the similarity.
ELL English Language LearnersIf children have difficulty pronouncing words from the sort, model using each word in a sentence. Have children repeat the sentence or use the word in a new sentence of their own.
Teacher TipTo help children keep picture cards separate from different sorts, have them attach together each sort’s cards with a paper clip before storing them.
Vocabulary Building VocabularyShow children the goose picture card. Ask them what other bird it looks like. Explain that a goose is a swimming bird that is like a duck but it has a larger body and longer neck.

ELL English Language LearnersModel how to correctly pronounce the beginning sound of c as in cup. Teach children how to exhale and squeeze abdominal muscles in order to emphasize the sound.
Teacher TipEncourage children whose names begin with c, h, f, and d to play the Bingo! game.

Alternative Sort: Things We UseHave children re-sort into groups of things people use and other objects. As children identify objects that people use, have them explain how each object is used.
ELL English Language LearnersThe names of some of the pictures may contain sounds that do not exist in a child’s native language. Guide children by asking them to repeat the name of each picture after you, as needed.
Teacher TipIf a child is having trouble pronouncing a particular sound, watch the child’s mouth to be sure his or her lips and tongue are positioned correctly.
Vocabulary Building VocabularyTell children that some words have more than one meaning. Explain that a watch is a small clock you wear on your wrist. The word watch can also be an action word. Watch means “to look at and pay attention to.”

Alternative Sort: ColorsHave children re-sort the pictures according to colors on them. The categories can include pictures that contain blue, red, green, and black.
ELL English Language LearnersReview picture names that might be unfamiliar to children, such as violin, zucchini, zigzag, or volcano. Ask children to use each word in a sentence.
Vocabulary Building VocabularyUse the zigzag card to help children see that a zigzag has sharp turns, first to one side and then the other. Ask them if they have seen lightning zigzag across the sky. Have them demonstrate zigzag as they walk.
