Mercy Challenge: Shelter the Homeless

“If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it?” James 2:15-16

Imagine yourself homeless. Imagine that you cannot take a shower before a job interview; that you cannot give them contact information. Imagine the sleeplessness you expe-rience, worried about your physical safety. Would you be the same person you are now?

How many times will you walk across town to an interview, without a shower, without sleep, without contact infor-mation? How many times will you be turned down before you become discouraged and give up? What do you do then?

There are people right now in Casper experiencing these same feelings of despair. What can we do to help? Educate yourself. The National Coalition for the Homeless is an advocacy group that has a wealth of information re-garding research on homelessness. It also tracks National and local legislation that affects the homeless and has a comprehensive “Take Action” section. You can find them at http://nationalhomeless.org/. Support the Housing First program. https://www.usich.gov/solutions/housing/housing-first, including the Casper Housing First program: http://www.chaoffice.org/services.The Star-Tribune wrote an article in the program’s initial success in 2015 which you can search online using the key words Housing First Casper. Seton House (http://www.setonhousecasper.org/)helps single parent homeless families. Contact 307-577-8026 to learn how you can help. Volunteer at The Sandwich Ministry. This inter-denominational group puts together sack lunches for the homeless. Many of the places where the homeless can get food are closed on the weekends and this group helps to fill the gap. Join them to help put together the lunches or to help distribute them. Donations of warm items (socks, blankets, etc.) are needed, as well. Please email or call Terry at 333-4618 or [email protected] for more information. A great op-portunity to help happens on January 27th. Please volunteer for the 2017 Point-in-Time Count. This is an annual count of persons who are homeless in each state. This year’s count will be held at King’s Corner Outreach Center at 112 N. Beech from 8:00am to 8:00pm. Volun-teers are needed for various tasks. Please contact Serve Wyoming- [email protected], 234-3428.

Let’s work together to help our brothers and sisters in Christ by working to provide the necessities of the body, so that we may rightly say, “Go in peace, keep warm and eat well.” If you have questions or any ideas for living the Works of Mercy, and/or you would like to work together to explore the Works of Mercy, please contact Nyrma Soffel at [email protected].
