YARD WORK-OUTREACH

Since our call for Outreach last month, we have had many inter-ested parties who want to take on specific niches within our com-munity. One of these niches is taking care of the needy/homebound/disabled that need yard work (mowing, raking, snow removal etc). We need a list of folks in our parish AND in our com-munity that could use a helping hand. The Soffel family will be organizing those individuals (matching a helper with a helpee). Are you interested? Do you know someone that needs assistance? Email Nyrma Soffel at [email protected] and get started today!

Attention College Students (18-25) The Diocese of Cheyenne is excited to be organizing a trip out to Seek2017, sponsored by Focus (Fellowship of Catholic University Students), January 3rd-7th, 2017 in San Antonio, TX. What is Seek? Tons of college students from hundreds of schools. Fabulous speakers. Cool artists. Amazing worship. Five incredi-ble days. One extraordinary adventure. How does that sound? SEEK isn’t your typical conference. It’s the start of a journey. This January, come join FOCUS and thousands of your future new friends for inspiring talks, awesome entertainment and one unforgettable experience. C'mon. Let’s SEEK together. (www.seek2017.com). We are excited to be able to offer grant money to students who are currently enrolled in one of the Wyoming Community Colleges or the University of Wyoming who wish to attend this great conference. The grant money will cover the cost of your registration (which includes lodging, quad occupancy). You will be respon-sible for the cost of transportation (a group flight has been arranged out of Denver) and meals, so approximately $400. For more information or to register, contact Amy at [email protected], 307-638-1530 (w) or 307-389-6010 (c ). Registration deadline is Saturday, Oc-tober 15th, 2017. Grant money is limited, so do not wait until the last minute to sign up!

MERCY CHALLENGE

“If you lavish your food on the hungry and satis-fy the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness, and your gloom shall become like midday.” (Isaiah 58:10)

Explore the Work of Mercy of Give Food to the Hun-gry. Examine yourself, your talents, your spiritual gifts. Does cooking bring you joy? Then cook. Do you have the gift of service? Then serve. Evaluate your time, your joys, and your interests, then try one or more of the following:

1. Organize a weekly food drive by a place of employment. For example: Food Bank Fridays is a twist on the traditional casual Friday where you buy-in to the privilege of dressing casually for work with a food item for the food drive.

2. If you regularly drive by a place where the hungry or homeless are present, bring a sandwich or snack with you to give to some-one on your way to work or school.

3. Volunteer once a month at a food bank or as a driver for Meals-on-Wheels.

4. Join the St. Patrick’s funeral dinner ministry. Participate once a quarter.

Buy supermarket gift-cards (get them from St. Anthony’s Tri-Parish School) and hand them to people begging at the Walmart parking lot or elsewhere.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF

When you provide food to a stranger as in example 2, 3 or 5 above , look that person in the eye. Ask their name and give them yours. Shake their hand and say their name. Feed his or her body with the sandwich. Feed their soul with your acknowl-edgement of their humanity.

Carry cash. Hand a $10 or $20 bill to a person who is begging. Challenge yourself to not judge or question how that person will use the money. Challenge your assumptions and give money freely and without fear.

While giving donations of cash and food to charities are helpful, challenge yourself to find a way to make it personal. It is Jesus you are serving.

Strive to incorporate a deliberate action towards each Corporal Work of Mercy throughout the year. Try to make one of the Works a regular activity. At least one of the Corporal Works should challenge you and bring you out of your comfort zone. If you have questions or any ideas for living the Works of Mercy, and/or you would like to work together to explore the Works of Mercy, please contact Nyrma Soffel at (307)251-6232 or [email protected]. You can anticipate an intense reflective, possibly painful, but spiritually honest self-encounter. You will also find support, warm fellowship, and community. The next Beginning Experience weekend will be in Casper and starts at 7:00 P.M. on Friday evening Nov. 4th, 2016 and runs through Sunday afternoon around 4pm 6th, 2016.
