Trinity to Share in Ministry CO-OP – Youth and Mission The Rev. Richard L. Vinson

Trinity Church, Solebury is joining with Trinity, Buckingham and St. Philip’s, New Hope in a cooperative initiative to more effectively engage in ministry. The youth ministries of both Buckingham and Solebury will join efforts this fall to foster a program by, with, and for young people.

On the second and fourth Sundays, youth in grades 6-12 will gather (the second Sunday at Buckingham, the fourth Sunday at Solebury). Youth, 3rd through 5th grades, are also invited to be participate on the fourth Sunday. In addition, the first Sunday will provide a service opportunity for youth of all ages, and on the third weekend there will be a “fun”, usually off campus, activity.

Peacemeal/Community Meal For years Trinity, Solebury has hosted Peacemeal along with St. Philips and Trinity, Buckingham. Through this ministry we have served countless people whose lives have been challenged by HIV/AIDS. Although Peacemeal has continued to offer opportunities for socialization and support, the population of those in need has lessened.

Community Meal, hosted at Trinity, Buckingham, is one of three such gatherings in Central Bucks which grew out of Code Blue, the ministry to provide shelter in the winter months to homeless persons.

Beginning in September, Peacemeal and Community Meal are going to join forces to create one event that will meet the first Sunday of each month beginning at

Trinity, Buckingham. The main dish will be provided, but help is needed to supply side dishes. Please call the parish office (215.297.5135) if you are willing to assist.

FUEL@5:55 FUEL@5 is back for a second year, but with more 5s. This creative liturgy will begin at 5:55 p.m. on the fourth Sunday of every month. Why 5:55? Because it sounds cooler than 6 o’clock.

Starting with a half hour worship time, followed by a meal, this will be an opportunity for the young and not so young to come together to do what the church does best – praise God and eat.

Once the meal is served, the youth will gather in age-specific groups.

Worship and the meal is open to all.

Will the Real Mary Stand Up? Advent Day of Reflection Saturday, December 9, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon The Rev. Dr. Virginia Sheay

What do we really know about Mary, the Mother of Jesus? We shall explore the Jewish Mary, the life she might have experienced in the first century, Jewish customs, prayers, temple feasts, and rituals. What do we know about Mary through the scriptures, paintings, poetry, ancient and modern, and in hymnody? What are the myths and legends surrounding Mary? How has the Church throughout its history portrayed her? The morning will be led by Susan Wells, Mary Miller, Barbara Tortorello, and Ginny Sheay. It is our hope you will experience a deeper understanding of Mary.

Trinity Music Update Timothy Harrell

Deadlines! Deadlines!!???? If one sees oneself as a writer, I guess writing an article for the “Tidings” would be viewed as a wonderful opportunity. For me, leading worship through music is one of the high points in my week. Seeing the expressions on peoples’ faces as they engage in the singing of hymns, service music, or listening to one of our choirs can be moving. On the Sunday nearest Memorial Day, when I announced changing the closing hymn to “Almighty Father, strong to save”, I saw how people were touched by the singing of the tune we associate as “The Navy Hymn” and watched people comfort each other as tears were shed, including my own. I was reminded of how important music is in the act of worship.

It is hard to believe I am finishing 19 years at Trinity. I continue to be thankful for this community of faith we call Trinity Church. It is a pleasure working with all ages hoping to instill the love of music making. The generous spirit of many people made it possible for us to have

the finest church organ in this area. It is that same generous spirit that continues to support our “Friends of Music” concerts. Later in the year, you will receive a “Friends of Music” brochure listing all the musical performances for 2017-18 season. The list of performing groups include Concordia Chamber Players, La Fiocco, Dryden Ensemble, Cantus Novus, and our own concerts under the “Friends of Music” heading. Our 19th annual performance of Handel’s “Messiah” is Sunday, December 17 at 4:00 p.m. I hope you will take the opportunity to enjoy the various musical offerings through the year.

The Chamber Choir and Senior Choir begin rehearsals on Thursday, September 14 at their usual time - 6:50 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saint Cecilia Choir begins rehearsals on Wednesday, September 27 from 5:00 - 5:45 p.m. For further information, please contact me at the church office.

Soli Deo Gloria!

Aid For Friends will commence for the season of 2017/2018 with the first gathering on Friday, September 15. Additional dates to follow for alternate months. This is a great opportunity for outreach and fellowship. Contact Cathy Dafrico for details: 215.348.8835 or [email protected].

The Year of NIMBY Trinity Outreach Day scheduled for Sunday, September 10

Please join us for our Annual Outreach Day after the 9:30 a.m. service on Sunday, September 10. We are focusing on activities that address our annual NIMBY focus. Living in the greater New Hope/Solebury area most of us see very little poverty or human suffering and assume it is down in Philadelphia or up in New York City and Not In Our Backyard. Well, it is in our backyard, but it often not as obvious. Our Outreach Committee is dedicating this year to raising awareness and supporting programs dealing with local poverty and suffering.

Outreach Day will offer the following opportunities for hands-on participation:

• Preparing breakfast bags: Aid For Friends

• Filling backpacks for homeless youth: Valley Youth & Fisherman's Mark

• Organizing school supplies: Lambertville Food Pantry

• Information table: New Hope Solebury (NHS) Cares

During our 9:30 a.m. worship service we are happy to be commissioning New Hope Solebury (NHS) Cares as our outreach partner. NHS Cares is a community based organization established “to create a safe and healthy community, one without the negative effects of substance abuse, particularly amongst our youth”.

All that is needed is YOU and your enthusiasm (and family members and friends)! Supplies, materials, and work areas will be provided and set up and waiting for your energy. Please join us!

Look for additional Outreach Opportunities this year!

• Various days and times to be announced: Aid For Friends

• October: Halloween costumes for Fisherman’s Mark and Lambertville Food Pantry

• November: Spread the Warmth - Hat and Glove Drive

• December: Pearl Street Giving - Church School/Parish

• First Sunday of the month at Trinity, Buckingham: Community Meal - an outgrowth of

Peacemeal and the Code Blue initiative

Education for Ministry Forum Earlene Austin

Back by popular demand, Pastoral Care has invited Ginny Slichter to present her forum, “Education for Ministry (EFM): Mentoring to the Inmates at Graterford Prison”. Ginny has been a Rector’s Warden at Christ Episcopal Church, chartered in 1826, and has been a mentor for over 10 years to over 35 graduates. This is an important ministry at the Prison and has shown to bring spiritual and theological education to a population that needs it desperately.

Please join Ginny, including slides of the graduates, on Sunday, November 19 at 11:15 a.m. in the Chapel.

For questions, please contact Earlene Austin at 215.208.5128.

Spiritual Formation Ministry Kay Rock

The Spiritual Formation Ministry is pleased to announce their theme of “PEOPLE OF THE BOOK” for the 2017-2018. In doing so, we are aligning ourselves with a major initiative from the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. In his launch, Bishop Gutiérrez writes, “To know the Bible better, is to know ourselves as the People of God better, to know our mission to the world better, and to know our faith better”.

Three Abrahamic Religions grew from the sons of Abraham and Hagar, and Abraham and Sarah. These three religions have provided us with powerful mythological stories that shape our understandings of God, our religious heritage, and the patterns of human life.

From the campfires of oral tradition, to the printed scrolls of the early Torah, to the Biblia—library of books—we hold in our hands today, our understanding of what it means to be a “people of the book” influences the choices we make and the ways we live. In addition, an understanding of the Koran will help us better understand our Islamic brethren, the descendants of Ismael, son of Abraham and Hagar.

We hope you will join us to celebrate and learn more about the scripture that serves as the foundation of our church and our liturgy, as well as participate in family and other educational events included in our Fall calendar.

SEPTEMBER SUNDAYS September 3 HAPPY LABOR DAY September 10 Outreach Day: “Basic Need” Backpacks, Family Event, McArthur Hall This is the year of NIMBY (Not in My Backyard!) for our Outreach Ministry as they strive to educate us that many social issues are indeed In Our Back Yard, right here in beautiful Bucks County. Please bring backpacks with working zippers, and friends and family, to help assemble “basic need” backpacks for homeless youth and adults in Bucks and Hunterdon Counties, as well as school supplies for ECS. September 17 Ministry Fair with Vestry Ministry Support, Family Event, McArthur Hall Come one, come all for a fun and informative way to learn more about the various ministries at Trinity, Solebury and discover where you might want to lend your time and talent for a ministry that’s close to your heart. The Fair will also introduce you to your Vestry members and the ministry they support. September 24 The Love Quilt Project with Gretchen Ginnerty, Chapel The Love Quilt Project uses the power of love to change the lives of vulnerable and orphaned South African and American children, many of them affected by the AIDS pandemic. Children send messages of love expressed through art to brighten lives and help heal souls. These messages are stitched into beautiful quilts that are then given to a child in need. The Love Quilt Project teaches tolerance and compassion. Participants learn that the healing power of love can change the world. Slides of some of the children and quilts will be shown. Gretchen Ginnerty, a new parishioner to Trinity, Solebury, is the Founder of The Love Quilt Project. Please come and meet and greet her, as well as learn more about the valuable services provided by The Love Quilt Project.

Spiritual Formation Ministry (continued) OCTOBER SUNDAYS October 1 Welcome Liturgy and Reception, All Parish Event, McArthur Hall October 8 “Scripture and Spiritual Growth” with Rev. Rick, Chapel Holy Scripture has been used for a variety of purposes, none more important than to strengthen the body of the faithful in the walk of faith. Scripture reminds us who we are and whose we are and calls us to return to the source of all that is. Join Rev. Rick to discover the power and potential for spiritual growth within the sacred texts.

Three-Part Series: BOOKS OF THE ABRAHAMIC RELIGIONS October 15 People of the Book—Part I: Hebrew Testament with Helen White, Chapel Join us for an outrageous, hands-on romp through the Hebrew Testament with Helen White. Bring your own Bible (BYOB) or use one of ours. We are delighted to welcome back Helen White, a pre-eminent Bible study facilitator who has led classes across the Diocese of Pennsylvania. Bishop Gutiérrez has acknowledged her work with “Approaching the Gospels Together,” a Synoptic Gospel approach to Bible study. We are grateful for her time with us. October 22 People of the Book—Part II: Christian Testament with Helen White, Chapel In Part II of our outrageous, hands-on romp through the Bible, Helen White will shine the spotlight on the Christian Testament. October 29 People of the Book—Part III: Introduction to the Koran with Will Rivinus, Chapel 1.2 billion Muslims around the world base their faith on the Koran, which they believe is the revealed word of God through the Angel Gabriel to Mohammed. This program will introduce the Koran to western eyes and ears—how it is organized and what it says for believers and non-believers. Parishioner Will Rivinus is an historical activist interested in the wide world around us and we appreciate this sharing of his carefully researched knowledge on the Koran. He has previously led Trinity programs on “God” and “The History of the Bible”.

NOVEMBER SUNDAYS November 5 Listening Session with Bud Holland, All Parish Event, McArthur Hall Join us for this parish-wide event where we revisit the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges faced by Trinity, Solebury and the larger church. Learn what initiatives have been pursued since our first Listening Session last January and identify what steps need to be taken for the future. November 12 Christian Apologetics - Not Apologies with Rev. Rick, Chapel Tired of apologizing for what people say and do in the name of religion? Embarrassed at times for what some "people of faith" profess? You aren't alone. In 21st century usage, apologetics is often identified with debates over religion and theology. Apology is admitting wrong. Join Rev. Rick to identify and clarify these two distinct and sometimes confused terms and how to apply them in today’s world. November 19 Education for Ministry (EFM): Mentoring to the Inmates at Graterford Prison

with Ginny Slichter, Chapel Back by popular demand, Pastoral Care again welcomes Ginny Slichter to Trinity. Ginny has been an EFM mentor for over 10 years to inmates at Graterford Prison, and has shepherded over 35 inmates through the 4-year program to graduation. This important ministry brings spiritual and theological education and awareness to a population that needs it desperately. Ginny will be showing slides of the graduates as part of her presentation. For questions, please contact Earlene Austin at 215.208.5128. November 26 THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY

Trinity Day School Looking Forward to New School Year Jessica Williams

Trinity Day School finished our wonderful 2016-17 school year with our traditional “Lolly & Yoyo” concert party (complete with popsicles). We celebrated a big step for our 19 children

who are moving on to kindergarten this fall. Field Day was an active day of games, focusing on cooperation and the importance of teamwork. Our new organic school garden is blooming, blossoming, and growing strong. Our lettuces have been delicious, and beans are now abundant. Peas, and hopefully squash, will be ready for a fall Day School harvest.

Now we are preparing for another school year full of fun educational and social opportunities for the youngest in our communities. Our classes are filling in nicely, and we will be

introducing new group program ideas. We will be offering a full schedule of engaging afternoon enrichment programs like, art history, holiday baking, young authors, Super Sleuths,

STEM, and more. School begins Tuesday, September 5. We do still have some spaces available, so please encourage inquiring families to contact us!

TDS is looking forward to this next year of partnership with Trinity Episcopal Church. We intend to once again engage in service projects and we invite the church community to join us. Please stay tuned as we finalize plans for our second annual “Bounty

Fest: Bake & Broth” fundraising event in October. We will also roll out the new year of small fundraisers like Giant A+ Rewards and KidStuff Coupon Books. With your help this past year, the Giant A+ Rewards program collected $436 for the school and KidStuff Coupon Books netted $425. These fundraising programs allow us to expand our enrichment opportunities for our students and provide extra support for facility improvements. We appreciate your assistance.

We send our best wishes to everyone for the 2017-18 school year!!

NHS Cares at Trinity

New Hope-Solebury Cares, a nonprofit based in the New Hope–Solebury community, began in March 2008, with a group of community members who were concerned that students were using and, in some cases abusing, alcohol and other drugs. It was determined that a strong and unified community response was necessary. Some eight years later, the organization is still going strong, focused on reducing underage drinking and substance use amongst the community’s youth. In the fall of 2015, NHS Cares received a federal grant to help sustain this very important work.

Currently the coalition is working to build community support for its youth substance abuse efforts. Andrea de la Flor, executive director of NHS Cares, has stated, "Success is achieving positive and lasting change in a community requires an all hands in approach."

Last month, our parish offered a dedicated office space to NHS Cares to accommodate their growing team. "We are heartened by those who have stepped up, and we look forward to doing great things together to benefit our community," de la Flor continued.

"Trinity Church is committed to its partnership with NHS Cares in prevention of drug and alcohol abuse and recovery from addiction. We support this important work in the community with our prayers, our investment of time and resources and by offering our physical space. The work of helping make the church and community a safer and healthier place is paramount and consistent with the Christian message of loving one's neighbor," said The Rev. Richard Vinson.

Tabasamu Outreach Mission Trey Wilson

Tabasamu, the Dental Education outreach mission, supported by Trinity Episcopal Church and scores of individual donors and volunteers is pleased to announce it 2017 missions adventure to Haiti.

The dates for this exciting opportunity are October 4-9.

We are seeking persons of all ages and vocations who are seeking experiences for tremendous spiritual growth, as well as meeting and making new friends. Our mission is to give societies with little access or means to achieve potential dental health the proactive ways to become healthier. As Rev. Rick recently taught us in the Gospel of Matthew, we are all seed scatterers and the potential for a harvest is great!

No experience required. Volunteers will receive education about teaching dental health and the

programs we have developed to help stem the wages of dental disease.

The training will take place on a Saturday in September (roughly 5 hours). All are invited to participate.

Any interested party should contact Kim Laughlin (215.718.3973) or Trey Wilson (917.714.8134).

We welcome you to join the 2017 Haitian Tabasamu Team!

Liturgy of Welcome The Rev. Richard L. Vinson

On October 1, we will observe a Liturgy of Welcome as part of the regular worship time. The purpose is two-fold. One, to recognize those who are "new" or "relatively new" to the parish, and two, give thanks and bless their journey in faith among us. So often people arrive at a church and begin to become a part of the fabric of the place without having been properly welcomed and thus struggle to know and be known. Also, it is easy to feel as if you are on the outside looking in at long established circles of friendships. Without meaning to be, the church is too often a closed system, difficult to break into. We want to change that.

If you are ready to stand up and be counted, ready to take the next step in your spiritual pilgrimage, ready to declare to others at Trinity that you are here, then I invite you to take part in this liturgy. All you have to do is say yes and on October 1 stand with me to be welcomed and blessed to share in the ministry of this place.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 215.297.5135 or [email protected].
