SATURDAY 26 OCTOBER 2019KICK OFF 15:00
EGHAM TOWN v COBHAM
GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE. We have the pleasure of entertaining for the first time in a long time our friends COBHAM FC for this Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League match. We welcome their players, supporters and officials, as well as the match officials. We hope you enjoy your stay here and get home safely. Our last home game was the FA Vase match against Binfield. We were behind in a minute and never recovered. The 0-4 scoreline was a bit of a downer, as was last Saturday’s 0-3 loss at Raynes Park Vale. What we needed for our Surrey Senior Cup tie at Woking’s ground to play Sheerwater was an improved performance, and that is exactly what we got. Despite going behind early on for the third game on the trot we rallied, played some lovely football on a dream surface and, thanks to some brilliant finishing from hat-trick hero Anthony Thomas, won 3-1. He could not have scored those goals without superb work from all his team mates. His first came from an assist by Luke Daley, our debutant goalkeeper, and there was sterling work also from new centre-back Rory De Costa. Luke Maguire will not be available today as he is suspended.

On Tuesday we travel to Knaphill in the search for more league points. Our guests today won 2-1 at home to Knaphill, having picked up three points at Badshot Lea (3-1) and Sheerwater (2-1) for three wins on the bounce. On 2 November we travel not quite as far as the Tesco in Sunbury to play at Spelthorne Sports, a week later we go to Krooner Park to face Camberley Town and on Tuesday 12/11 we are at home to Badshot Lea.
Enjoy the match Mark

Following an inspection earlier this week, it has been necessary to make a number of decisions relating to a member club, Raynes Park Vale FC. The immediate problem is that the floodlights at the club no longer reach the required standard and, as a result and subject to the approval of the Management Committee, all CCL Saturday matches at the ground will kick off at 2.00 p.m. as from the imminent end of summer time. Also, no CCL midweek
evening matches will be played at the ground until such time as the situation has been rectified. The club has been given until the end of the year to carry out a number of other repairs/improvements.By co-incidence, the League Management Committee has recently approved a new ground share arrangement between Raynes Park Vale and Kensington & Ealing Borough with immediate effect, with the latter’s agreement to play at Leatherhead FC having been terminated. The same proviso, therefore, will apply to Kensington & Ealing Borough. There are not too many Saturdays where the fixtures of both clubs clash, i.e. both are due to be at home on the same day and these will be dealt with on an individual basis.Whether or not Raynes Park Vale can play their forthcoming FA Vase match at the ground on Saturday 2 November is in the hands of the FA, who are fully aware of the situation.

SPECASVERS SURREY SENIOR CUP FIRST ROUNDWEDNESDAY 23 OCTOBER 2019SHEERWATER 1 (1) Luke Taylor (4)EGHAM TOWN 3 (1)Anthony Thomas 3 (24, 46, 90)
Egham Town earnt a home tie against Frimley Green in the Surrey Senior Cup with this confident and well deserved win against a decent Sheerwater side at Woking’s Laithwaite Stadium. Tony Choules’ men bounced back superbly after two poor showings, aided by a magnificent hat-trick from leading scorer Anthony Thomas. The Sarnies had two debutants on show, with Luke Daley in goal and Rory De Costa at centre-back. On a perfect pitch the home side took the lead when Luke Taylor’s shot took a horrible deflection to leave the new Egham keeper
![Page 10: s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com · Web viewtook the lead. Jay O’Connell slipped a perfect through ball to Thomas, who rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the end with the massive](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022041808/5e55cda8c5879e31e4273f76/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
flatfooted. Mr Daley had his revenge twenty minutes later, a long and accurate drop kick upfield bouncing between the Sheerwater 6 and 18 yard lines, from where Thomas was waiting to drill a perfectly executed half volley beyond Craig Smith. Two excellent saves by Daley from Jimmy Norman kept the score level. The second half was barely a minute old when Egham took the lead. Jay O’Connell slipped a perfect through ball to Thomas, who rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the end with the massive (empty) stand. “Tommo” then hit a 35 yarder that lifted just over the bar. O’Connell hit the left post with a thunderous shot after being played in by the impressive De Costa as the Sarnies dominated. Home sub Chris Machay forced Daley to make another decent save as Sheerwater tried to breach an Egham defence looking considerably more organised than in those two preceding losses. Amin Belaid replaced Robinson and showed an encouraging enthusiasm for having a shot, forcing Smith into a decent save at the foot of his right post. In the last minute Belaid ran from the half way line and rolled in a perfect through ball for Thomas who, once more, took the ball on, left Smith stranded and rolled the ball into the net. Egham face Cobham at home in the League on Saturday and go to Knaphill next Tuesday.EGHAM TOWN: Luke Daley, Ben Peden, Justin Thompson, Rory De Costa, Tristan Toney (Captain), Adam Humphries, Jay O’Connell, Prince Mbengui, Anthony Thomas, Luke Maguire, Kiemon Robinson. Substitutes: Jake Sobolak (Maguire, 58), Craige Tomkins, Amin Belaid (Robinson, 73).

Cobham Football Club was formed on Friday 5 November 1886 by Founding President, Hon. Alan Egerton MP and villagers connected with the local Coffee Tavern. The Vicar offered to supply it with a football. On 4 November 1890, The Evening Telegraph reported on the death of our Centre Half, Arthur Smith, following injuries sustained in a match vs Kingston Wanderers. In 1892, the Club affiliated to the Surrey FA. The home ground was never settled with various fields around the outskirts of the village being used at different times. During the late 1920's they played in the Kingston and district league winning division 1 in 1928/29 and 1929/30. In the 1930's they gained intermediate status and quickly achieved senior status in 1938 upon election to the Surrey senior league. The war years between 1939 to 1945 saw a vote to agree a temporary merger with the Avorians Sports Club to form Cobham Avorians to ensure local football continued. After the War, the Club made home at Cobham recreation ground until 1955/6 when it moved to Anvil Lane also known as the Leg o' Mutton field. The club took its nickname from the word anvil and thus became the Hammers. During the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s the club had a really good local feel with the ground being a vibrant hub of football. The floodlights were installed in1997/8 and were christened with a game against Conference side Woking. The Hammers were founder members of the Combined Counties League moving up from the now defunct Surrey Senior League. They finished second to Ash United in 1998/9. Amongst long serving stalwarts such as Dave Tippetts who first joined the club in the 1980’s, the pride of place on the clubhouse wall goes to a picture of Reg Madgwick, who served as player, committee member and fund raiser. When he died in 1995, he requested his ashes be scattered on the pitch and left all his worldly possessions to the club and the decision was made to rename the ground The Reg Madgwick Stadium in his honour. The Club won the Combined Counties Premier League Challenge Cup in 2001/2 beating Bedfont FC 3-2. After the stand went up in 2004, the club was a mainstay in the Combined Counties under the overall guidance of the late Ken Reed who died in 2017. After a new committee was elected in 2015, the club has built its Junior football with 16 sides to compliment the men’s team and the new seated stand, new fencing and the dual turnstile were put in during April 2016 to allow the ground to achieve a Grade D (Step 4) rating. 2017/2018 saw the club promoted for the first time in its history to the Combined Counties Premier Division under the stewardship of Sam Merison and the introduction of an U23 side to support the first team. Indeed, the Hammers most recent silverware was in 2018/19 when the Cobham Under 23’s beat SCR FC Under 23’s on Penalties to win the Development League Cup. The Summer of 2019 saw the Hammers become an FA Charter Standard Club. With many of the towns businesses now on board as sponsors and suppliers, the Hammers are on a firm footing for progression and are delighted to have Committee members who have so many ties between them and their families who have the club and town at heart.
