MESSAGE FROM FR. ROBERT

December 22, 2019 Fourth Sunday of Advent

Dear Friends, Advent is almost finished and Christmas preparations are in full swing! There is so much happening at Guardi-an Angel and I am thrilled to be a part of it! I hope you all are, as well. Last Sunday, we had our final Advent Children’s Church. Children’s Church is a special Liturgy of the Word where pre-K through 4th grade children are taken out of the main Church at the 11:30 am Mass into the vestibule to have the readings and the Gospel presented to them in ways that younger minds can understand. They even make a little craft to help cement the learning — this past week’s was a Nativity Sticker Scene. It looks like they really liked it! In the new year, we will be having Children’s Church twice per month. Look to the bulletin for the next one!

This past Wednesday, our Parish of Guardian Angel delivered the gifts from the Giving Tree to the Kindergar-ten and special needs students of Paterson Public School #28. This year 220 gifts were delivered — a fantastic amount! I thank all who participated for their generosity!

At each of the Masses this weekend, you will see the wares of Bethlehem Handicrafts displayed. Please take a look and see if there is something you would like to give someone at Christmas (or keep for yourself)!

This Sunday, December 22nd, at 7pm, we will enjoy the annual Festival of Carols! It is one of our church's most beloved events, which features the Children's Choir, Adult Choir, a reenactment of the Nativity Story, and of course, great music. Attending this event is a wonderful opportunity for families to spend quality time together, welcome the Christmas season, and celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I am very much looking forward to tonight! Please join me!

Finally, I am very excited to be here for my first Christmas at Guardian Angel. Please consult the Mass schedule in the bulletin, online, or in the special mailing that was sent to your homes! Knowing that some of you may be traveling over the holiday, I wish to extend to you on behalf of myself, Fr. Don, and all the staff of Guardian Angel our best hopes and prayers for a happy, healthy, and holy Christmas! For those remaining in Allendale or close by, please bring your family and friends to our happy Church for the Christmas celebrations! Let us all rejoice in the birth of our Savior together in happiness and peace!

May the coming of the Christ-child fill our hearts with love and tenderness towards all we encounter! May God bless you and your family this Christmas!

In Christ,

Fr. Robert

STEWARDSHIP

“When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.” MATTHEW 1:24

Putting our complete trust in the Lord without expecting any-thing in return. Striving to put God first in all things and follow Him wherever He may led us. As we prepare for the birth of our Lord, pray for the strength and courage to be a model of discipleship, just as Joseph was.

During Advent we prepare our minds and hearts for the real meaning of Christmas, the birth of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. As we reflect on the upcoming Christmas Season, it is likely that we will be busy with parties and family gatherings. Perhaps even a trip out of town to visit friends. With all of those joyous celebrations, we might miss Mass. That’s where eGiving with Faith Direct can help simplify your life. By supporting Guardian Angel, both you and our parish can save some time and peace of mind this holiday season. .

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

• The next Youth Mass is January 5th at the 11:30AM mass.

• The second Sponsor Retreat option is also January 5th from 8:30am through Youth Mass. If you did not attend the first Sponsor Retreat, you must attend the second.

• I am still waiting on Sponsor Forms.. Please have the document (can be found on our website under Confirmation Program) filled out by the sponsor, sealed by the sponsor’s parish, and brought/delivered to Guardian Angel.

• I would like to build a schedule of service, whether it be once a month or more/less with teens that are in-terested. That would be ideal, but it depends on availability and interest, of course. Service is a huge part of our mission as Catholics. Just a friendly reminder that colleges absolutely love to see their applicants have a record of service through high school (not to mention it can seriously offset some tuition costs).

• January 7th is the first Large Group CCD session. All Confirmation Candidates must attend! It is at 7:30pm in the Red Barn. There will likely be a Guest Speaker and we will discuss the Sanctity of Life.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

YOUTH MINISTRY

THE SEASON OF CHRISTMAS By Frances Ferraro

Time is a funny thing; if you ask my children, they’d say it drags - particularly when they are at school. If you were to ask me, I’d say it flies - particularly in the morning when we are all trying to leave the house for work or school at the same time. One thing is for sure though - whether we think it drags or flies or no matter what we do with our time - once it’s gone, we can never get any of it back.

Of the many important truths our Catholic faith has taught me over the years, there is one in particular that has become my steadfast companion; namely to appreciate the passage of time and to savor each liturgical season. What does this have to do with Christmas? Well, plenty.

The “unofficial” beginning of the Christmas season for most begins on the first Sunday of Advent. The Advent wreath in my home in its own quiet way, has taught me the vital meaning of patience and holy waiting; neither of which come easily to me. Advent is followed by the Christmas season which begins at sundown on Christmas Eve and contin-ues through the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (Jan 12, 2020). For many, the fact that Christmas isn’t a “one day only” event may come as a surprise given the common tendency to return to “business as usual” shortly thereafter. Why then, does our Church teach and encourage us to celebrate Christmas from sundown on Christmas Eve through the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord? What is our Catholic faith trying to tell us or more specifically, to teach us during this period of celebration?

For one thing, we are encouraged during this time to reflect on the liturgical title of the Christmas Mass; THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD and to discern how the entry of God into the world through the birth of the infant Jesus has profound meaning for our lives. In other words, what can we learn from God and about God by the form in which He chose to manifest Himself? The word NATIVITY is key to unlocking the meaning of this period of celebration. As we gaze upon the many nativities that are set up in our homes, communities and Churches, we see that Christianity isn’t simply a vague spirituality but a religion of incarnation. We can more clearly appreciate the visible link between God’s timeless truth and His enduring love and in this way, the incarnation can never be far from our hearts. Put simply, we learn a most profound and timeless truth: in the birth of a child lies the hope of the world.

ON THE MEANING AND IMPORTANCE OF THE NATIVITY SCENE

Excerpt from the December 1, 2019 Apostolic Letter Admirabile Signum of the Holy Father Francis

Continuation from December 15th bulletin

Reflecting on the various elements of the nativity scene in order to appreciate their deeper meaning. First, there is the background of a starry sky wrapped in the darkness and silence of night. We represent this not only out of fidelity to the Gospel accounts, but also for its symbolic value. We can think of all those times in our lives when we have experienced the darkness of night. Yet even then, God does not abandon us, but is there to answer our crucial questions about the meaning of life. Who am I? Where do I come from? Why was I born at this time in history? Why do I love? Why do I suffer? Why will I die? It was to answer these questions that God became man. His closeness brings light where there is darkness and shows the way to those dwelling in the shadow of suffering (cf. Lk 1:79).

The landscapes that are part of the nativity scene also deserve some mention. Frequently they include the ruins of ancient houses or buildings, which in some instances replace the cave of Bethlehem and become a home for the Holy Family. More than anything, the ruins are the visible sign of fallen humanity, of everything that inevitably falls into ru-in, decays and disappoints. This scenic setting tells us that Jesus is newness in the midst of an aging world, that he has come to heal and rebuild, to restore the world and our lives to their original splendour.

It is customary to add many symbolic figures to our nativity scenes. The presence of the poor and the lowly in the nativity scene remind us that God became man for the sake of those who feel most in need of his love and who ask him to draw near to them. Jesus, “gentle and humble in heart” (Mt 11:29), was born in poverty and led a simple life in order to teach us to recognize what is essential and to act accordingly.

Gradually, we come to the cave, where we find the figures of Mary and Joseph. Mary is a mother who contemplates her child and shows him to every visitor. The figure of Mary makes us reflect on the great mystery that surrounded this young woman when God knocked on the door of her immaculate heart. Mary responded in complete obedience to the message of the angel who asked her to become the Mother of God. Her words, “Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38), show all of us how to abandon ourselves in faith to God’s will. By her “fiat”, Mary became the mother of God’s Son, not losing but, thanks to him, consecrating her virginity. In her, we see the Mother of God who does not keep her Son only to herself, but invites everyone to obey his word and to put it into prac-tice (cf. Jn 2:5).

At Mary’s side, shown protecting the Child and his Mother, stands Saint Joseph. He is usually depicted with staff in hand, or holding up a lamp. Saint Joseph plays an important role in the life of Jesus and Mary. He is the guardian who tirelessly protects his family. When God warned him of Herod’s threat, he did not hesitate to set out and flee to Egypt (cf. Mt 2:13-15). And once the danger had passed, he brought the family back to Nazareth, where he was to be the first teacher of Jesus as a boy and then as a young man. Joseph treasured in his heart the great mystery surrounding Jesus and Mary his spouse; as a just man, he entrusted himself always to God’s will, and put it into practice.

When, at Christmas, we place the statue of the Infant Jesus in the manger, the nativity scene suddenly comes alive. God appears as a child, for us to take into our arms. Beneath weakness and frailty, he conceals his power that creates and transforms all things. It seems impossible, yet it is true: in Jesus, God was a child, and in this way he wished to reveal the greatness of his love: by smiling and opening his arms to all.

As the feast of Epiphany approaches, we place the statues of the Three Kings in the Christmas crèche. Observing the star, those wise men from the East set out for Bethlehem, in order to find Jesus and to offer him their gifts of gold, frank-incense and myrrh. These costly gifts have an allegorical meaning: gold honours Jesus’ kingship, incense his divinity, myrrh his sacred humanity that was to experience death and burial.

Dear brothers and sisters, the Christmas crèche is part of the precious yet demanding process of passing on the faith. Beginning in childhood, and at every stage of our lives, it teaches us to contemplate Jesus, to experience God’s love for us, to feel and believe that God is with us and that we are with him, his children, brothers and sisters all, thanks to that Child who is the Son of God and the Son of the Vir-gin Mary. And to realize that in that knowledge we find true happiness. Like Saint Francis, may we open our hearts to this simple grace, so that from our wonderment a humble prayer may arise: a prayer of thanksgiving to God, who wished to share with us his all, and thus never to leave us alone.

The son born of Mary shall be called Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

(Matthew 1:18-24)
