READINGS FOR SUNDAY, JULY 5, 2020 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Zechariah 9:9-10 Second Reading: Romans 8:9, 11-13
Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30 FOCUS: Jesus’ kingship is one of mercy with humility
and compassion for all who struggle.
In the kingship of Jesus, we celebrate his humility and
gentleness, and in a particular way, his understanding of
the blessings of children. His dominion is not one of
power and control, but of a servant who lifts up the fallen
and raises all who are burdened; he is gracious and
merciful.
LITURGY OF THE WORD:
Zechariah tells Jerusalem to rejoice, for their king shall
come to [them] … riding … on a colt, proclaiming a
message of peace to the nations. Saint Paul instructs the
Romans that whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ
does not belong to him. In the Gospel, Jesus gives praise
to the Father for what he has revealed to the little ones.
Readings for next week, July 12: Fifteenth Sunday in
Ordinary Time: Isaiah 55:10-11; Romans 8:18-23;
Matthew 13:1-23 or 13:1-9
From Liturgical Commission Publishing, Lansing, MI

Dear Friends:
Every organization that works with the public knows that the first face one sees at the
office and the first voice one hears over the phone can make people feel welcome,
informed, and at home: or not. This is especially true of the Church. St. Benedict’s rule of
hospitality tells us to “treat everyone as Christ.” This is not just a slogan. Catholic
parishes are, and should be, held to a higher standard because we aspire to re-present
Jesus to all who come to our doors, particularly the poor and needy.
For eight years, our community has been blessed to have someone who lives up to this
ideal, Mrs. Ann Ferro. A long-time parishioner, Ann came to St. Mary’s Rectory with
organizational skills honed over the years at a prestigious law firm and extensive
knowledge of parish history. With our fearless leader, Mrs. Laura Fay, Ann has set the
standard of professionalism in our office, keeping track of our records, communications,
bulletin, and special notifications. At the same time, her kindness and care for our
parishioners could not be more evident.
At the end of July, Mrs. Ferro will be moving to live closer to family in Virginia and
Maryland. We were hoping to mark her departure with a celebration, but given the
present circumstances that will not be possible. We will, however, be seeing Ann over the
course of July at Mass, especially the 5 PM Saturday Liturgy. Please assure her of our
love and prayers for a well-deserved retirement. Ann, we will miss you! Come back soon!
With much love,
Fr. Valentine

And then there was light
In Genesis 1:3-5 there is the following passage: And God said, ”Let there be light,” and there was
light. And God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.
The restoration of the St Mary’s steeple Cross is ongoing and improvements are continuing daily. The
latest milestone achieved is the removal and replacement of the florescent light above the lantern of the
steeple and the installation of a lighting system at the top of the steeple. Let me explain both. For years,
lighting was maintained in the tower - the area above the Church, below the belfry and lantern, the
section with the largest display of stained glass. Chris O’Neil, our Church Sacristan, explained the light
in the tower is used to prevent bats from trying to take up residence. This light has not operated
properly for years. A new LED light has been installed and combined with a new timing system will
now illuminate the tower along Bryant Avenue at sunset.
More importantly, the light that fell from its housing and sat perilously close to the edge of the Church
has been replaced. Our intrepid electrician Rob singlehandedly climbed up, through the top hatch and
installed a new LED light system. This will illuminate the Cross when it returns. Rob said the new light
will last for years to come and while installing it also manufactured a safety harness to prevent the light
housing from falling if dislodged from its base.
In talking with our Cross restoration manager, Matt Doherty the wood for the cross has been ordered
and should arrive within two weeks. Then the craft of milling and preparing the wood to the exact
specifications of the old Cross will begin. More information about the wood and milling process to
follow in two weeks.
So, when you have a moment drive or stroll by the Church at dusk. See the new light in the tower and
imagine for a moment what the new Cross will look like when returned to the top of St Mary’s
Church.
