Ignition Switch

2005 - 2007 (WK) Jeep Grand Cherokee

2006 - 2007 (XK) Jeep Commander

The ignition switch on about 640,000 of the above vehicles may experience an

unintended change in ignition switch position while driving. This may result in a

loss of engine power, power steering assist, power brake assist or disable the

airbag function. Disabling one or more of the vehicle’s safety features could

increase the risk of vehicle occupant injury during a crash and/or cause a crash

without warning.

The ignition switch and lock cylinder must be replaced.

SPECIAL NOTE: To prevent any misunderstandings about the modification

performed to the vehicle, be sure to explain to the customer the new process

to turn the ignition off (push and turn).

Models

IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer used vehicle

inventory. Dealers should complete this recall service on these vehicles

before retail delivery. Dealers should also perform this recall on vehicles in for

service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process.

1. Disconnect the negative battery

cable from battery.

2. Using a plastic trim stick, carefully

remove and save the ignition switch

bezel (Figure 1).

NOTE: The ignition switch bezel

snaps off.

3. Remove and save the silencer pad

(two screws) (Figure 2).

4. Remove and save the knee blocker

(Figure 2).

5. Using a T20 TORX® bit,

remove and save the two key

cylinder housing retaining

screws (Figure 3).

6. Remove and save the instrument

panel bezel (Figure 4 or

Figure 5).

7. Using a T20 TORX® bit, remove

and save the one key cylinder

housing retaining screw

(Figure 6).

8. Carefully lower the key cylinder

housing assembly and disconnect

two electrical connectors (one at

ignition switch and one at Sentry

Key REmote Entry Module

[SKREEM]).

9. With the key in the ignition and

in the “RUN” position, press the

park lock cable release tab and

disconnect the cable from the key

cylinder assembly (Figure 7).

10. Place the ignition key cylinder

assembly on a clean work bench

(Figure 8).

11. Remove and save the SKREEM

unit from switch housing

(Figure 8).

12. Using a T10 TORX® bit, remove

and save the one ignition switch

retaining screw from the ignition

switch housing (Figure 9).

13. Using needle nose pliers,

simultaneously press in the two

ignition switch release tabs and

remove the original ignition

switch by pulling the ignition

switch from the ignition switch

housing (Figure 10).

14. Remove and discard the original key lock cylinder from the ignition switch

housing by rotating the key to the “ON” position. Then press on the release tab

and pull the ignition lock case out of the ignition switch housing (Figure 11).

15. Use the following procedure to determine the key code for the vehicle.

a. Log onto DealerCONNECT.

b. Select the “Service” tab.

c. In the “Repair Information” box select “Key Code”.

d. Enter the vehicle VIN number.

e. Select “Reason Code” number 2 “Lock/Replacement Key”.

f. Enter password.

g. Check the small box in the disclaimer box.

h. Select “Search”.

i. Write down the key code information for future reference.

16. Use the following procedure to code the tumblers for the new lock cylinder to

the original vehicle key:

a. Using the key code obtained in Step 15 of this procedure, use the Key

Code-to-Tumbler Code chart (pages 17 through 32) in this document to

determine the correct tumbler code. Write down the tumbler code for future

reference.

b. Using the tumbler code obtained in Step 16a., layout the tumblers as shown

in Figure 12.

NOTE: The tumblers in the kit are in plastic bags labeled 1 through 4.

Also the tumblers are stamped with a number 1 through 4.

c. Place a tumbler spring into the

ignition lock cylinder slot hole

closest to the key side of the

ignition lock cylinder

(Figure 13).

NOTE: The kit contains extra

tumbler springs in case one is

lost and/or damaged during

installation.

d. Insert the correct tumbler for the

first tumbler slot (Figure 13).

CAUTION: Do not force the

tumbler into the ignition lock

cylinder. Use a rocking motion

to engage the tumbler into the

ignition lock cylinder. When the tumbler is properly installed it will not

come out and is spring loaded.

NOTE: The kit contains extra tumblers in order to accommodate all

tumbler codes. The extra tumblers can be discarded or saved for future

repairs.

e. Rotate the ignition lock cylinder ½ turn and install a tumbler spring into the

second ignition lock cylinder slot hole.

f. Insert the correct tumbler for the next tumbler slot.

CAUTION: Do not force the tumbler into the housing. Use a rocking

motion to engage the tumbler into the ignition lock cylinder. When the

tumbler is properly installed it will not come out and is spring loaded.

g. Repeat Steps 16e. and 16f. until all seven lock tumblers have been installed

into the ignition lock cylinder.

17. Push the spring-loaded tumblers into the ignition lock cylinder and insert the

ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder.

18. Use the following procedure to test fit the ignition lock cylinder into the lock

cylinder (Figure 14):

a. Insert the ignition lock cylinder into the key cylinder (no detent springs or

pin installed).

b. Turn the ignition lock cylinder from stop-to-stop while it is inserted into the

key cylinder:

If there is no binding while turning the ignition lock cylinder, continue

with Step 20 of this procedure.

If there is any binding while turning the ignition lock cylinder, continue

with Step 19 of this procedure.

19. Use the following procedure to eliminate any binding of the ignition lock

cylinder in the ignition lock case:

a. Remove the ignition lock cylinder from the ignition lock case.

b. Verify that the correct lock tumblers have been installed.

c. Verify that the key was cut correctly.

d. Verify that the key is not bent, excessively worn or damaged.

NOTE: If a damaged key(s) is found, the cost of key(s) replacement is

the customer’s responsibility.

e. Test fit the ignition lock cylinder in the ignition lock case. There should be

absolutely no binding when turning the ignition lock cylinder. If binding is

still present, repeat Step 19 of this procedure.

CAUTION: Be sure that there is no binding when turning the ignition

lock cylinder in the ignition lock case. If there is binding, determine the

cause and correct the condition. The ignition lock cylinder cannot be

assembled until the binding condition has been identified and the cause

corrected.



20. Remove the ignition lock cylinder

from the ignition lock case.

21. Apply grease to the detent springs

and detent pins (Figure 15).

22. Install the two detent springs and pins into the ignition lock case (Figure 15).

23. Apply the provided grease to the

ignition lock cylinder tumblers and

the inside of the ignition lock case

(Figure 16).

24. With the ignition key in the ignition lock cylinder, insert the assembly into the

ignition lock case. Turn the ignition lock cylinder clockwise to the key stop

(Figure 17).

NOTE: The first time the ignition lock cylinder is turned to the key stop,

it will require extra effort to get past the detent pins. Verify that the

“Push to Turn” feature is functioning properly.

25. Rotate the key to the “ON” position (lock cylinder retaining tab on side of

ignition lock case can now be depressed) (Figure 18).

26. Insert the lock cylinder assembly into the ignition switch housing (Figure 18).

27. Push the new ignition switch onto the back of the ignition switch housing until

the two retaining tabs snap into place.

28. Using a T10 TORX® bit, install the ignition switch retaining screw.

29. Install the SKREEM module onto the key cylinder assembly.

30. Test the function of the ignition lock assembly by rotating the key to all

positions. Verify that there is no binding when turning the ignition key.

Correct any binding condition if present before installing the ignition lock

assembly into the vehicle.

31. Use the following procedure to install the ignition lock assembly into the

vehicle:

a. With the key in the ignition and in the “RUN” position, insert the park lock

cable into the key cylinder assembly.

b. Connect two electrical connectors (one at ignition switch and one at Sentry

Key REmote Entry Module [SKREEM]).

c. Place the key cylinder housing assembly into position in the instrument

panel.

d. Using a T20 TORX® bit, install the three key cylinder housing screws.

e. Install the instrument panel bezel.

f. Install the knee blocker.

g. Install the silencer pad (two screws).

h. Install the ignition switch bezel.

32. Connect the negative battery cable to the negative battery post.



33. Install the “Push and Turn” label in the location shown in Figure 19.

34. Return the vehicle to the customer.

SPECIAL NOTE: To prevent any misunderstandings about the ignition

switch modification performed to the vehicle, explain the new process to

turn the ignition off (push and turn) to the customer.

Claims for vehicles that have been serviced must be submitted on the

DealerCONNECT Claim Entry Screen located on the Service tab. Claims

submitted will be used by FCA to record recall service completions and provide

dealer payments.

Use the following labor operation numbers and time allowances:

All involved vehicles have been entered into the DealerCONNECT Global Recall

System (GRS) and Vehicle Information Plus (VIP) for dealer inquiry as needed.

GRS provides involved dealers with an updated VIN list of their incomplete

vehicles. The owner’s name, address and phone number are listed if known.

Completed vehicles are removed from GRS within several days of repair claim

submission.

To use this system, click on the “Service” tab and then click on “Global Recall

System.” Your dealer’s VIN list for each recall displayed can be sorted by: those

vehicles that were unsold at recall launch, those with a phone number, city, zip

code, or VIN sequence.

Dealers must perform this repair on all unsold vehicles before retail delivery.

Dealers should also use the VIN list to follow up with all owners to schedule

appointments for this repair.

Recall VIN lists may contain confidential, restricted owner name and address information that

was obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles of various states. Use of this information

is permitted for this recall only and is strictly prohibited from all other use.

FCA has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2005 through 2007 model

year Jeep® Grand Cherokee vehicles and 2006 and 2007 model year Jeep® Commander vehicles.

The problem is... The ignition switch on your vehicle may experience an unintended change in ignition

switch position while driving. This may result in a loss of engine power, power steering

assist, power brake assist or disable the airbag function. Disabling one or more of the

vehicle’s safety features could increase the risk of vehicle occupant injury during a

crash and/or cause a crash without warning

What your dealer

will do... FCA will repair your vehicle free of charge. To do this, your dealer will replace the

ignition switch and lock cylinder. The work will take about one hour to complete. However,

additional time may be necessary depending on service schedules.

Simply contact your Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge or RAM dealer right away to schedule a

service appointment. Ask the dealer to hold the parts for your vehicle or to order them

before your appointment. Please bring this letter with you to your dealer.
