Pope Francis’ Year of Mercy Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father,

and you have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved.

Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money;

the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things;

made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.

Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:

“If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the Invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by

forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world,

its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be

clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who

approaches them feel sought after, loved and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing so that the Jubilee of Mercy

may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good

news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the op-pressed,

and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy;

you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Amen

Mercy

There are many definitions of “mercy.” Traditional Catholic moral theology

treats the virtue of mercy as flowing from love of neighbor. Namely, it is that virtue which inclines us to offer assis-tance to a person suffering from want or misery. This being so “mercy” in moral theology…. is not love itself but love’s result and extension (quoted in “Pillars of Fire in my Soul: the Spirituality of St. Faustina,” Marian Press, 2003, p. 95).

SAINT ANTHONY PARISH CATHOLIC SOCIAL

TEACHING COMMITTEE Quotes for Reflection

“There is a need for financial reform along ethical lines that would produce in its turn an economic reform to benefit everyone. This would nevertheless require a courageous change of attitude on the part of political leaders.” Pope Francis

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK:

Today we come to the end of the Christmas season with the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord. With the Baptism that Jesus submitted to by John the Baptist in the Jordan, he bridges the Old and the New Covenants, and the coming cycle of sacred scriptures will open up his years of public ministry. We might even examine the

meaning of our own Baptism: What does my baptism mean to me? Before we leap ahead to Ash Wednesday on February 10th, we have one last opportunity today to reflect on the question: How have I experienced Christ this past Christmas and/or Advent season? This weekend is the final opportunity to reflect and pray at the Nativity scene and respond to these questions: Where do I find Christ in my life right now? How do I live my baptism? What am I thankful for as I enter into this New Year? In the pamphlet from Our Sunday Visitor, the author gave “Pope Francis’ 10 Secrets to Happiness.” There are so many ways we can be happy and most of them pushed our way are materialistic. Pope Francis identifies ten secrets that are time tested and true. I will simply list them again:

1. Live and let live. 2. Be giving of yourself to others. 3. Proceed calmly (my hoped for goal). 4. Develop a healthy sense of leisure. 5. Make Sunday a holy day. 6. Create jobs for young people. 7. Respect and take care of nature. 8. Stop being negative. 9. Respect other’s beliefs. 10. Work for peace.

Each one of these steps can easily require some time for prayer and reflection, seek-ing guidance on how we can live these steps, these virtues, these aspects of the Gospel message. From being washed into the life of Christ at Baptism to living our baptism each day, Pope Francis gives each of us specific goals for this New Year. Let us take them to heart and put them into practice and transform our world, our parish, our families and our homes. Blessings - Father Larry

* A housekeeping request: On Monday, January 11th we need individuals to take down the wreaths, garland and stars, box up the ornaments, put away the Christ-mas trees, the crèche figures and return to the green banners of Ordinary Time Happy New Year! Please sign up after Mass today.

From the Parish Office

We are blessed to have such a strong community of

volunteers. At this time, we would like to ask for people to help in the Parish Office. We have opportunities to volun-teer for afternoons (Tues. - Thurs. from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.) and to cover during vacation days. You would be asked to assist one day per week or every other week as part of a rotating roster. If you have office experience and some availa-ble time, please contact Tracey Nicol, our Parish Secretary, at 408-997-4800, to discuss what is involved. Some train-ing will be needed, computer experience is not necessary, but could be helpful. THANK YOU!!

Scripture Study

Tuesday morning Scr ipture study resumed on Tuesday, January 5th at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Room.

Wednesday evening Scr ipture study resumed on Wednesday, January 6th and will delve into the “Book of Revelations.” Weekly meetings are held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the McKean Church. If you are interest-ed, please contact Catherine Knaresboro at (408) 268-6242, as soon as possible, so an order can be placed for materials.

Arise! Season 2 Please “Save the Date” for Season 2, which will begin the week of February 7 and conclude the week of March 13, 2016. Dur ing these 6 weeks, parishioners are invited to join a small faith-sharing group. Each group meets once a week, for approx. 1.5 hours and the cost is $20

per person. Dur ing the meeting, par ticipants use the Arise guidebook to learn more about their personal faith. Discussion questions encourage each individual to think about their relationship with God and how they live their “Catholic faith.” Par-ticipation in Season 1 is not necessary for those interested in joining Season 2. All are welcome--and we encourage those that have participated in the past to select a differ-ent group so that everyone has the opportunity to meet all our wonderful parishioners!

Sign-ups for Season 2 will be held the weekends of January 23rd/24th and 30th/31st. Those that participated in the past have found the experience to be very enlightening. They have also enjoyed connecting with more Saint Anthony parishioners. Please plan now to join a small faith-sharing group during this upcoming Lenten season!
