THE FEAST OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

This weekend we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity. This belief distinguishes us, Christians, from other Religions that also believe in One God. Here are some examples of how the saints, theologians (Catholics and Protestants), priests, nuns, religious, catechism teachers and ordinary Christians have tried to explain the mystery of the One God with Three Divine Persons.

(1) Sister Matthias: she draw a triangle on the blackboard to explain that the Holy Trinity is One God with Three Divine Persons. (2) Religion Teacher: she used the shamrock, inspired by the story of St. Patrick, to explain the Holy Trinity. (3) St. John of Damascus: "Think of the Father as a Spring of Life...the Son like a River, and the Holy Spirit like a Sea, for the spring and the river and the sea are all one. Think of the Father as a Root, of the Son as a Branch, and of the Spirit as a Fruit, for the substance in these three things is one The Father is the Sun with the Son as Rays and the Holy Ghost as Heat. The Trinity transcends by far every similitude and figure. So when you hear of an offspring of the Father, do not think of a corporeal offspring...Rather, hold your persuasion with a sim-ple faith alone. For the concept of the Creator is arrived at by analogy from his creatures." (4) John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church: "Tell me how it is that in this room there are three candles and but one light, and I will explain to you the mode of the divine existence of the Holy Trinity." (5) St. Augustine: He was walking on the beach, trying to understand the mystery of the Holy Trinity. He came upon a young boy filling a hole he had dug in the sand with buckets of sea water. When he asked the boy what he was doing, the boy told him that he was going to pour the water of the ocean into that hole. He told the boy that it was impossible to do that because the ocean is so vast and the hole in the sand is so small. The boy responded, "No more impossible than you trying to understand the mystery of the Holy Trinity." (6) Catechism Teacher: The element of water can have three distinct forms - ice which is solid - water which is liquid - and vapor which is gas. It has three distinct forms but it is all the same element of water. (7) Parishioner: Think of the pews in the church on which wor-shippers are sitting. Once it was a tree in the forest. Then it was cut down into pieces of lumber. Then, the carpenters shaped them into beautiful church pews. The tree, the lumber and the bench, they are all the same tree or wood in their three distinct forms. (8) Theologian : "The Trinity is a doctrine in the Bible, which if a person does not believe, he is sure to lose his soul. But if he tries to understand, he will lose his mind." What is your favorite way of explaining this mystery? More importantly, what do you think is the message of the Holy Trin-ity for us?

It will be held from Monday through Fri-day August 6 - 10, 2018. The VBS theme this year is "Shipwrecked". We will take the kids to an uncharted island where they will be rescued by Jesus. Incoming first through sixth graders will be our campers, while incoming 7th graders through high school seniors will apply to be Leaders in Train-ing (LITs). VBS half-day camp begins at 9 am with daily morning mass and ends at 12 noon. We offer an optional afternoon coding camp from 12:00 - 4:00 pm for the first 20 students who regis-ter. The coding camp is taught by Los Altos High School stu-dents. As the number of students attending VBS is growing every year, we need lots of parents help. One of our urgent need is to help supervise the kids. Please sign up for one or two shifts of 4 hours so you can experience VBS with your child. If you can help in other areas, please email me. Register your child now or help us sponsor a camper if you can. Paper forms are available at the back of the church. Please fill out the form, attach the check and drop it in the collection basket or in the rectory. Last but not least, please keep our VBS families in your prayers. Say a Hail Mary or offer a decade of Rosary for us. May Our Lady watch over us and protect us!

Dear parishioners,

I am happy to announce that 40 boys and girls re-ceived the sacramental Body of Jesus and His pre-cious Blood for the first time earlier this month. We were also blessed with 24 teens receiving the out pouring of the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of Confir-mation last week.

We did it!!! Thanks to all those who contribut-ed to build a strong faith through these sacraments of initiation.

Since these two sacraments are usually received dur-ing the early years of our lives, I would like to recog-nize the commitment and dedication of the parents and sponsors of these boys and girls.

I would also like to mention the catechists and helpers whom Sunday to Sunday dedicated a good number of hours in the faith formation of these youngsters. The following people were key to the success of this catechetical year, they have greatly contributed, as instructors, organizers of pot-lucks, fund raisers, sending emails, making phone calls, etc.:

A special thanks to Maria Gulliani, Alice Lee, and my wife Rosa Maria who have been walking me step by step in the process of filling my new role as Catechetical Program director. Last but not least, thanks to Fr. Oscar for being so supportive. Something I mentioned to the confirmed, and also Monsignor Cilia said during the celebration is that “confirmation is not a graduation from religious education”, rather confirmation is just a beginning to see life with the eyes of Jesus. Therefore, I encourage you, parents and sponsors, to continue feeding the faith of your children through your advice and good actions. I also encourage you parents of the 1st Communion boys and girls to take them to the table of the Lord every Sunday to receive His Body and His Precious Blood together. Thanks to all of you, we did it!!! God Bless. Deacon Leonel Mancilla
