The "Early Church" After the Resurrection Last week's Gospel was St. John's account of the appearanc-es of the risen Lord to the disciples and to the doubting Thomas. This week is St. Luke's story of more post resur-rection events when the risen Lord appeared to Peter and the disciples showing them the wounds in his hands and feet and even asking them to touch his body. He also asked them to give him food to eat so they could believe he had a real body and not a ghost. This was the time when the "early church" was "being conceived" just shortly before the Pentecost which many Bible scholars consider as the real birthday of the Church. Who was this "early church" which the Acts of the Apos-tles described in chapter 1 as "they (who) went to the upper room?" "The 'they' so far in Acts have been the 11 apostles, original members of the 'Twelve.' They go to the upper room, the site of their assembly and prayer in the coming days, and the place where they will receive the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost. The Twelve were the highest ranking group in the earliest years of the Church. Recall that Jacob (in the Hebrew Scripture or Old Testament) had 12 sons, and they were the origin of the 12 tribes of Israel. The com-munity of early Christians saw themselves as the 'new Israel' with a 'new covenant' and the Twelve symbolized this new people of God." With them was Mary, the mother of Jesus, mentioned in Acts. 1:14. This was the only time her name is mentioned outside the Gospels. "But external rank and in-ternal holiness are two different things - as is evident from the Twelve chosen by Jesus, and from Church leaders ever since. Through the centuries, the list of our leaders has been a checkered one, with some extraordinarily holy leaders, and some otherwise. Of course, all of us who follow 'the Way' (another early name the first Christians were referred to) have checkered (and sinful) lives too." That's why we start Mass by saying aloud, 'Lord, have mercy.' " What time frame is considered the "early Church?" "Church historians and Scripture scholars offer different answers. Some consider the early Church to be the years leading up to the Council of Nicea of 325 A.D., the first ecu-menical council. These first 300 years were marked by per-secutions, which ended with the Edict of Milan, decreed by Constantine the Great in 313 A.D. . Constantine was em-peror of the Roman Empire, and had converted to Christi-anity. During his reign, churches were built, possessions were returned to Christians, and Christianity experienced an upswing in popularity. Other scholars consider the early Church to extend to the sixth century, as Christianity began to spread into other countries. The first 100 years of Chris-tianity are also referred to as the Apostolic Age, that ends with the death of St. John, the last surviving apos-tle." La "iglesia Temprana" Después de la Resurrección

El Evangelio de la semana pasada cuenta la versión de San Juan acerca de las apariciones de nuestro Señor resucitado a los discípulos y a Tomás incrédulo. Esta semana es la histo-ria de San Lucas de más acontecimientos después de la re-surrección cuando el Señor se le apareció a Pedro y los dis-cípulos mostrándoles las heridas en sus manos y pies y hasta les pidió tocar su cuerpo. Hasta les pidió de comer para que los discípulos vieran que él tenía un verdadero cuerpo y que no era un espíritu. Esto era el tiempo cuando la "iglesia tem-prana" estaba siendo "concebida" sólo poco antes de Pente-costés que muchos eruditos de Biblia consideran como el verdadero nacimiento de la iglesia. ¿Quiénes son " La Iglesia temprana" qué los Hechos de los Apóstoles describe en el capítulo 1 como "ellos (los que) fueron al cuarto de arriba?" "'Ellos' hasta ahora en Acciones han sido los 11 apóstoles, miembros originales de los 'Doce.' Ellos van al cuarto de arriba, el sitio de su asamblea y rezo en los días próximos, y el lugar donde ellos recibirán al Es-píritu Santo en el primer Pentecostés. Los Doce eran el gru-po de clasificación más alto en los años más tempranos de la iglesia. Faith Formation for Children, Teens and Adults Our Faith Formation program seeks to empower our most important Catechists—our parents—to guide the faith for-mation of their children. We deepen our faith in Jesus through Scripture stories, reflection, prayer and seasonal celebrations in large and small groups. Formation sessions will be provided to the parents and students in Grades 1-5 on Sunday mornings during the school year. Baptism of Children Parents are invited to contact our parish Secretary to set up an appointment for an initial interview with one of our priests. Parents and Godparents are required to attend a Baptismal preparation session prior to the Baptism. No Baptism date can be set until the interview with the priest. San Diego – In response to announcements regarding deploying the United States National Guard to the U.S./Mexico Border, the U.S. Catholic Bishops of the U.S./Mexico Border issued the following statement:

“We are deeply concerned by the announcement that the National Guard will be deployed on the U.S./Mexico Border. The continued militarization of the U.S./Mexico Border distorts the reality of life on the border; this is not a war zone but instead is comprised of many peaceful and law-abiding communities that are also generous in their response to hu-man suffering.

“We recognize the right of nations to control and secure their borders; we also recognize the need of nations to respect the rule of law. Current law in the United States rightly provides that those arriving to our country fleeing persecution are entitled to due process as their claims are reviewed. Seeking refuge from persecution and violence in search of a peaceful life for oneself and one’s family is not a crime. Our faith calls us to respond with compassion to those who suf-fer, and to live in a spirit of solidarity with all human beings.

“We remain hopeful that our local, state and federal officials will work collaboratively and prudently in the implementa-tion of this deployment, ensuring that the presence of the National Guard is measured and not disruptive to community life. We are also deeply concerned that at this time divisive rhetoric often promotes the dehumanization of immigrants, as if all were threats and criminals.

“We urge Catholics and people of good will to look past the dehumanizing rhetoric regarding immigrants and remember that they are a vulnerable population, our neighbors, and our sisters and brothers in Christ.”

Obispos de California cuestionan la prudencia del despliegue de la Guardia Nacional a lo largo de la frontera de EE.UU. y México

Podría ser conveniente la presencia de las tropas para las tareas de interdicción de estupefacientes pero no para montar “guardia” contra los hombres, mujeres y niños que buscan una vida mejor.

“Las iniciativas para arreglar un sistema de inmigración en mal estado usando a la Guardia Nacional son el resultado de que ambas ramas del gobierno, la ejecutiva y la legislativa, han fracasado en gobernar en Washington. Convocar a la gente buena de la Guardia Nacional – los primeros socorristas cuando nuestras comunidades enfrentan desastres – es imprudentemente agotar su buena voluntad y sus recursos limitados y doblegarse a los temores y odios de los nativistas.

“La Guardia no puede hacer el trabajo que el Congreso se ha negado a realizar ya por décadas. Los dirigentes de nuestro país deberían asumir su responsabilidad para promulgar una reforma migratoria que provea una solución humanitaria y legal para las familias inmigrantes que trabajan tan arduamente. La reforma migratoria debería brindar a los ciudadanos, como a los inmigrantes, una seguridad razonable de sabernos protegidos ante aquellos que quisieran hacernos daño.

“Estados Unidos no necesita un mejor muro. Necesitamos a líderes más fuertes comprometidos a proteger la dignidad humana y promover la solidaridad con los más vulnerables entre nosotros”.

New and Improved Banners and Stations of the Cross

Thank You Team! We wish to thank the team of volunteers who spent many hours helping Fr. Paul frame and mount our new Stations of the Cross in the church in time for Holy Week. This team also made significant improvements to the banners we used in the Sanctuary for Holy Thursday.
