The Covenant of Love “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for

many for the forgiveness of sins." (Mat 26:28)

Throughout history, nations make treaties with one another. According to Wikipedia, “Treaties can be loosely compared to contracts, both are examples of willing parties assuming obligations among themselves, and any party that fails to live up to their obligations can be held liable under international law.” Covenant, on the other hand, is more like a contract between a larger nation with a smaller vassal state, whereas the vassal state adheres to the conditions determined by the larger one in order to receive its protection and sponsorship. Accordingly, God chose the people of Israel to reveal God’s loving relationship to them. Thus, God made the Covenant with Israel under the conditions that they were to accept God as their only God and abide by God’s Laws and Statues. In turn, God would bless them with life and protect them from other nations. If Israel failed to keep their faith in God, they would lose favor from God. To seal the Covenant, “Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and the other half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. Then he took the book of the covenant and read it in the hearing of the people; and they said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient!” Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.” (Exo 24:6-8). Also, the sacrificial blood of the lamb was being used as a mean to attain God’s forgiveness of their sins.

However, the Old Testament tells us how the Chosen People of God had proven to be unfaithful to God, unable to fulfill their part of the Covenant. Yet, God being always faithful to his Covenant of love, sent His only Son to incarnate, taking human nature to redeem the whole human race. Jesus Christ, being obedient to the Father’s will, took upon himself the role of the sacrificial Lamb to die for the sins of the whole world. Only the blood of Jesus as the Lamb of God could seal the New Covenant between God and the New Chosen People of God, all those who believe in Christ. Since He is God, he only offered that Sacrifice once and for all. As the sacrificial lamb was used to bring life to God’s chosen people of old, Jesus offered his sacrificial Body and Blood to bring life eter-nal to the New People of God through his institution of the holy Eucharist, “And as they were eating, he took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take; this is my body." And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. (Mark 24:22-25)

As we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ this Sunday, we give praise and thanksgiving to God the Father for the most wonderous Gift of Jesus Christ to us to establish the New Covenant to humanity. Indeed, as a sacrificial Lamb of God, He not only brought forgiveness to our sins, but also offering his most sacred Body and Blood as food for the life of the world.

La Alianza de Amor “porque esto es mi sangre del nuevo pacto, que por muchos es

derramada para el perdón de los pecados” (Mat 26:28)

A lo largo de la historia, las naciones hacen tratados entre ellos. Según Wikipedia, "los tratados pueden ser comparados con los contratos, ambos son ejemplos de partes dispuestas que asumen obligaciones entre ellos, y cualquier parte que no cumpla con sus obligaciones puede ser considerada responsa-ble según el derecho internacional". Alianza, por otro lado, es más que un contrato entre una nación más grande con un es-tado vasallo más pequeño, mientras que el estado vasallo se adhiere a las condiciones determinadas por la más grande para recibir su protección y patrocinio. En consecuencia, Dios escogió al pueblo de Israel para revelar la alianza de amor de Dios con ellos. Por lo tanto, Dios hizo la Alianza con Israel bajo las condiciones que debían aceptar a Dios como su único Dios y cumplir con las Leyes y las Estatuas de Dios. A su vez, Dios los bendeciría con la vida y los protegería de otras naciones. Si Israel no mantuviera su fe en Dios, perde-rían el favor de Dios. Para sellar la Alianza, "Moisés tomó la mitad de la sangre y la puso en cuencos, y la otra mitad de la sangre la roció sobre el altar. Luego tomó el libro del pacto y lo leyó a oídos de la gente; y dijeron: "¡Haremos todo lo que el SEÑOR ha dicho, y obedeceremos!" Solo la sangre de Jesús como el Cordero de Dios podría sellar el Nuevo Pacto entre Dios y el Nuevo Pueblo Escogido de Dios, todos aquellos que creen en Cristo. Como Él es Dios, él solo ofreció ese sacrificio de una vez por todas. Como el cordero sacrificial se usó para dar vida al antiguo pueblo escogido de Dios, Jesús ofreció su Cuerpo y Sangre sacrificiales para dar vida eterna al Nuevo Pueblo de Dios a través de su institución de la sagrada Euca-ristía, "Mientras comían, tomó pan y después de dar gracias, lo partió y dijo: «Este es mi cuerpo que se da por vosotros; haced esto en recuerdo mío.» 25.Asimismo también la copa después de cenar diciendo: «Esta copa es la Nueva Alianza en mi sangre. Cuantas veces la bibiereis, hacedlo en recuer-do mío.» (Marcos 22-25)

Al celebrar la Fiesta del Santísimo Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo este domingo, damos alabanza y acción de gracias a Dios Padre por el don más maravilloso de Jesucristo para establecer la Nueva Alianza con la humanidad. De hecho, como el Cordero de Dios, no solo trajo el perdón a nuestros pecados, sino que también ofreció su Cuerpo y Sangre más sagrados como alimento de vida para el mundo. Fr. Paul-Cuong Phan

Faith Formation for Children, Teens and Adults Our Faith Formation program seeks to empower our most important Catechists—our parents—to guide the faith for-mation of their children. St. Athanasius Church Vacation Bible School

It will be held from Monday through Friday August 6 - 10, 2018. The VBS theme this year is "Shipwrecked". We will take the kids to an uncharted island where they will be rescued by Je-

sus. Incoming first through sixth graders will be our campers, while incoming 7th graders through high school seniors will apply to be Leaders in Training (LITs). VBS half-day camp begins at 9 am with daily morning mass and ends at 12 noon. We offer an optional afternoon coding camp from 12:00 - 4:00 pm for the first 20 students who regis-ter. The coding camp is taught by Los Altos High School students. As the number of students attending VBS is growing every year, we need lots of parents help. One of our urgent need is to help supervise the kids. Please sign up for one or two shifts of 4 hours so you can experi-ence VBS with your child. If you can help in other areas, please email me. Register your child now or help us sponsor a camper if you can. Paper forms are available at the back of the church. Please fill out the form, attach the check and drop it in the collection basket or in the rectory. Last but not least, please keep our VBS families in your prayers. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Today, we are careful never to come into con-tact with blood unless protected by gloves, masks, and goggles. In the reading from Exodus, however, Moses dramatically splashes blood all over the altar and the people assembled for worship. Blood is the sign of God's covenant with the Israelites, a powerful bond between Creator and creature. Sprinkling blood on God's people connects them with the life force of the Lord. The reading from Hebrews shows how God remains faithful to the ancient covenant of blood, per-fecting it in the bloody death of Jesus. Mercifully, Je-sus' sacrifice on the cross put an end to the bloodshed. Our Eucharistic celebration is an unbloody sacrifice. As we participate in the liturgy, we share in the new covenant Jesus gives us, recorded in our reading from Mark's Gospel: ""Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
