SAINT JOSEPH PARISH WAKEFIELD MA

Dear Parishioners, This Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday. The image of Divine Mercy depicts Jesus with white and red rays radiating from His heart. The rays remind us of the blood and water that came from the side of Jesus when He was pierced with the sword as He hung upon the cross. The white rays symbolize the water of Baptism and the red the blood of the Eucharist. This pouring out of the blood and water is the source of the sacramental life of the Church. Divine Mercy Sunday is a reminder that our salvation is a gift of God’s Mercy. On the cross Jesus paid the price of salvation. He satisfied the justice of God - for the wages of sin is death. We, in turn, received His mercy, the forgiveness of our sins and the hope of eternal life. We are loved by God unconditionally. Let us respond to this love by giving our love to Jesus. This year, we will not have a formal program for Divine Mercy on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. We encourage you to visit EWTN or Boston Catholic Television to view the Divine Mercy Mass and related events. You can find more information on page 4 in this bulletin to help you celebrate this great feast. Many of you may be wondering about our First Holy Communion and Confirmation Masses that were originally scheduled for May. At the moment, we have no idea when we will be able to gather to celebrate these sacraments. When the suspension of Mass is lifted, we will reschedule these Masses for a date that will be suitable for everyone. This pandemic is having an effect in many arenas. Many have lost their jobs, health issues have been disrupted, many cannot grieve with friends that have lost loved ones, and there is a rise in domestic violence and suicides. As Christians it has affected receiving the sacraments. I am fearful that we do not know the invisible toil this pandemic is causing. At times like this, we turn to the Lord. He is our peace. The first words He spoke to His apostles after His resurrection were, “Peace be with you.” In Scripture we have so many references on “Do not fear.” In Isaiah 26:3, “You will keep in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You.” We are in turbulent times. Let us be strong and of good cheer knowing that we are in the hands of our loving God. I wish to thank all those who sent cards and gifts during this Easter celebration. I especially wish to thank you for your financial support of the parish. We looked at our expenses. In normal times, we need $15,500 a week to meet our expenses without a grand annual collection. After limiting staff and activities, that amount is reduced to $13,500 a week. This amount is fluid as we look at our income in the coming weeks.

FAITH FORMATION

Reflection of the Week

Most people want to serve God, but only in an advisory capacity.

Eyes in the Back of My Head

I was as mischievous as any other child in my early years and tried to hide my bad behavior to avoid getting into trouble. Yet my mother usually found out what I had done. I recall being amazed at how quickly and accurately she knew about my antics. When I marveled and asked how she knew, she always replied, “I have eyes in the back of my head.” This, of course, led me to study her head whenever she’d turn her back—were the eyes invisible or merely cloaked by her red hair? As I grew, I gave up looking for evidence of her extra pair of eyes and realized I just wasn’t quite as sneaky as I had supposed. Her watchful gaze was evidence of her loving concern for her children. As grateful as I am for my mother’s attentive care (despite being occasionally disappointed I hadn’t gotten away with something!), I’m even more grateful that God “sees all mankind” as He looks upon us from heaven (Psalm 33:13). He sees so much more than what we do; He sees our sadness, our delights, and our love for one another. God sees our true character and always knows exactly what we need. With perfect vision, which even sees the inner workings of our hearts, He watches over those who love Him and put their hope in Him (v. 18). He’s our attentive, loving Father.

Laughter, THE BEST MEDICINE

According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.

PRAYER Intentions

Your prayers are requested for the deceased of our community and all of our parish benefactors, our sick, our military, especially our parishioners who are currently deployed to an active combat area and all those who have asked us to pray for them this week. Their names have been inscribed in our parish Book of Intentions in the Chapel. Please contact the rectory to add a name.

PARISH NEWS

St. Joseph Parish supports the Wakefield Food Pantry. Drop off baskets located in the foyer by the library for your donations of non-

perishable food items to benefit the needy. This month the pantry is especially in need of baked beans, beef stew, Progresso and Chunky Soups, chili, jars of pasta sauce. Monetary donations are also welcome and can be dropped off at the rectory to the attention of Maureen Miller. Thank you for your generosity.

Altar Server Training ~ May 2020

Training for new altar servers is tentatively scheduled for May. Actual dates are dependent upon the number of enrollees. Enrollment is open to all St. Joseph and public school students, Grade 3 and above.

Training is conducted in three one and one half hour sessions. Students must attend all three training sessions and commit to serving a minimum of three years. Registration forms are available in the rectory.

New servers are always paired with an experienced server to assist with their newness in serving. We are soliciting assistance of senior servers to participate in training of their peers as it is most helpful for new servers to enjoy the comfort of experienced servers during training. Any server interested in volunteering to assist in this most important ministry may do so by submitting your name to the rectory.

Saint Joseph Inner Healing Ministry

The Saint Joseph Inner Healing Ministry recognizes this is a challenging and uncertain time we are living in. With many restrictions in place face to face prayer sessions are no longer an option. However through the Grace of God we have technology on our side. We will be offering virtual Inner Healing prayer sessions through Zoom video conferencing with our trained prayer ministers. Inner Healing can bring relief to our deepest fears, hurts, emotional pain, traumatic memories, tormenting thoughts, and relationship issues. If you are interested in making an appointment

please email Lisa Palmere at [email protected].
