ALL SAINTS DAY TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1

A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION This Tuesday, November 1, is the Feast of All Saints. This great feast of the Church honors all those faithful Christians of the past who now rejoice in God’s presence in the Kingdom of Heaven. By their prayers and example these saints encourage us in our own journey to the Lord.

All Catholics are expected to join in the celebration of Mass for All Saints Day. By doing so we give praise to the God who calls us to himself and we honor those holy people we have known whom God has called to himself.

Masses for All Saints Day are as follows: Monday, October 31,

7:30 pm Tuesday. November 1,

7:00 am, 8:30 am & 10 am Please note there is no evening Mass on November 1

Please Note: Due to the Anticipated Mass for All Saints Day, There will be NO Miraculous Medal Novena this Monday, October 31.

ALL SOULS DAY WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2

All Souls Day, celebrated on November 2, is the commemoration of all the faithful departed. On this day the Church especially prays for the dead. We pray that God may bring our deceased to new life in the kingdom of heaven. We invite all those who suffered the loss of a loved one to remember and celebrate them at our regular Masses at 7 & 8:30 am Masses. The Annual All Souls Day Mass for all our deceased relatives and friends who died this past year will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 2, at a special evening Mass at 7:30 pm.

31 SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 30, 2011

SPECIAL SERIES ON THE MASS This is the fifth of a series of articles designed to help us grow in our appreciation of the Mass, and to help us prepare for the coming changes in the liturgy. Previous articles may be found on

our parish website (sjcnj.org) under “bulletins.”

PART FIVE: THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER “Now what are you supposed to say?” All of us probably heard those words from our parents when we were growing up. A relative, neighbor, or friend would present us with a gift and our parents would immediately remark to us “Now what are you supposed to say?” Those words would remind us to say “Thank you.”

Expressing thanks and gratitude was one of the most important lessons that our parents tried to teach us. They wanted saying “Thank You” to become a habit in our life.

Expressing our thanks should also be a habit in our spiritual life. In fact, it could be argued, that it should be the most important habit. For everything we have, everything we are, is a gift from God for which we are to express our thanks. In fact, being a person of thanks and gratitude, who recognizes all is a gift from God, might well be the main difference that sets a person of faith apart from an person without faith.

The Eucharistic Prayer is the central prayer of the Mass. And it is a prayer that is all about expressing thanks and praise to God.

This prayer begins with the invitation “Lift up your hearts.” “Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.” By that invitation the Church, in a sense, says to us “Now what are you supposed to say?”

In the Eucharistic Prayer, which the priest prays in our name, we gratefully recall the wonderful things God has done for us. God created us. God invited us to have a relationship with Him. God did not abandon us when we turned from Him and sinned. In Jesus, God took on flesh and came among us as our brother. Jesus gave his life in service, love, and obedience to the Father. In doing so, Jesus Christ responded to God’s love for His people. Jesus was humanity’s perfect “Yes” to God, and by that “Yes” we are raised to a new relationship with God, one that will last forever.

During the Eucharistic Prayer, we recall the Last Supper that Jesus had with his apostles. We pray that the Holy Spirit, which came upon Jesus, may come upon our gifts of bread and wine and transform them into the Body

and Blood of Christ. And we ask that we who are nourished by this holy food may be transformed by that Holy Spirit and we “may become one body, one spirit in Christ.” (Eucharistic Prayer III)

The Eucharistic Prayer also invites us to prayerfully remember the members of God’s Church throughout the world, as well as those members who have died. We ask that the living may be strengthened in faith, and that the dead may be brought into the light and peace of God’s heavenly kingdom.

This central prayer of the Mass also includes three sung acclamations by the assembly, namely, the “Holy, Holy,” the “Memorial Acclamation,” which will now be called “The Mystery of Faith.” and the “Great Amen.”

In the “Holy, Holy,” we join the angels and saints of heaven in giving thanks and glory to God. There is a slight change in the wording of the "Holy, Holy" or "Sanctus." It will now go

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

The difference is so slight, you might not have noticed it. We will no longer say Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, but rather, Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.

God is often referred to as The Lord of Hosts in the Old Testament. The word "host" signifies a multitude, an army—God’s heavenly army of angels and saints.

In the “Memorial Acclamation,” or “The Mystery of Faith” we proclaim the paschal mystery that says by dying Jesus gained new life.

And in the “Great Amen” we ratify the prayer that the priest has proclaimed in our name to our generous, loving God. We ratify the prayer by our AMEN! We make it our own

There are ten versions of the Eucharistic Prayer currently in use. Each begins with the invitation “Lift up your hearts to the Lord,” and ends with the “Great Amen.” Each proclaims what God has done for us and each gives us the opportunity to say exactly what we are supposed to say to God each Sunday and each day of our life, namely, “Thank you!”

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Grade 7 Retreat Night this Friday, November 4 Reminder to all Grade 7 Students of the Religious Education Program: This Friday evening, November 4 , is a retreat evening from 6:30 to 9:00 pm in the Lower School Gym.

TARGET NEWS TARGET, our high school youth program for those in grades 9 through 12, sponsors a Hang Out Night that takes place each Thursday from 7 to 9 pm in the TARGET Room in the rectory/parish office.

OUR BAPTISM PROGRAM The celebration of infant baptism is a joyous occasion for a child’s family and for the Church family, Just as the

birth of a child leads parents to reflect on the gift of human life, so the baptism of a child leads parents, and the whole parish, to reflect on this sacrament and what it means to be a part of God’s Church.

We have a new parish baptism program. Its primary purpose is not so much to prepare parents to celebrate the day when the waters of baptism will be poured over their child, but rather to help parents reflect on

the meaning of their own baptism and the Catholic Faith they wish to share with their child. Our baptism program has several components or “gatherings.” These “gatherings” are led by members of our parish who are excited to share their faith and the joys of parenthood with new Moms & Dads.

Those who wish to have their children baptized at our parish should contact the parish office well before the fifth month of pregnancy so they can take part in the “gatherings” before the actual baptism. Please contact the rectory office for more information, our program schedule, and registration forms. (201-261-0148) or ([email protected]).

A CORNERSTONE REFLECTION by Donna

Calling all Ladies! Do you need “me” time or time to check out and unplug from your daily grind? Have you

ever thought about what your Catholic faith means to you or how it impacts your life? If you answered yes to either of the above, then give yourself the gift of a 27 hour retreat and attend the Women’s Cornerstone Weekend on March 2 & 3, 2012, where you will be inspired in your faith.

As a full time working mother of two and a wife, my life and schedule are super hectic, but without question the time I spent at the Cornerstone Retreat was one of the best gifts I could have ever given myself. The weekend gave me a deeper appreciation for my faith, enabled me to enjoy a greater sense of community, the ability to celebrate my faith outside of Mass and an opportunity to socialize with people who want to live a Christian life.

The Cornerstone Retreat only comes around once in a year so don't miss it. Whether you come to check it out to see why so many people at our parish are passionate about Cornerstone or you are looking to get to know the person that sits near you at Mass, come treat your-self to this invaluable gift. There is no pressure or re-quirement to share, it is just a welcoming and caring place to sit, listen and be inspired by the Holy Spirit and by the women of the Cornerstone Ministry! Give your-self this gift and you'll join the ranks of those who like me felt that it was a great experience and are glad they attended! Please put the dates on your 2012 Calendar, Friday & Saturday, March 2 & 3.

GIVING THOUGHT This Tuesday, November 1, is all Saints Day, a day we honor all those judged worthy to have a place in the Kingdom of Heaven. Have you ever considered the qualities that make a person a saint?

People become saints by striving to imitate the qualities that Jesus showed in his life, namely, love, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, mercy, faithfulness, honesty, integrity, selflessness and generosity. Each time the collection basket comes before us, each time we are asked to support our Church or some charitable cause, we have the opportunity to become a little more “saintly.”Give it some thought!
