24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - September 17, 2017 Today’s Gospel Reflection: Matthew 18:21-35

FORGIVENESS Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: “Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you?” Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the commandments. As Saint Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord. Jesus’ parable in today’s Gospel reminds us of God’s compassion. The immense sin of

“I Confess”

O ne form of the penitential rite at the beginning of Mass is the traditional

Confiteor, or “I confess,” a prayer that was formerly prayed by the priest alone at the foot of the altar, but which is now prayed by the entire assembly. The Confiteor is at once personal—“I confess”—and communal, prayed aloud, together. We recognize that sin does not just separate us from God; sin comes between us and others, isolating us. We acknowledge that sin has many dimensions, individual and communal: sins of thought, sins of speech, sins of action, sins of omission. Sin is not something that happens to us; sin is something we do. In the Confiteor, we take responsi-bility for our own actions. The repeated insistence on our “fault,” with the ritual gesture of striking the breast, an ancient sign of penitence, is not meant to lower our self-esteem. Rather, it acknowledges our human instinct to transfer the blame when-ever we can (“The devil made me do it!”). This prayer stops us short. We take responsibility for ourselves, our actions, our failure to act. Then we cry out to God in those ancient words, Kyrie, eleison—Lord, have mercy. For the sinner who repents, there is mercy. This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sun-day on September 17, 2017. The 2017 theme will be "Living as Missionary Disciples." Those who the Community has desig-nated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commis-sioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

How are parents, the primary catechists of their children, recognized on Catechetical Sunday? Parents are truly the primary catechists of their chil-dren. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only highlight the work of cate-chists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. This is why the rite of bless-ing of catechists used on Catechetical Sunday includes an op-tional blessing of parents and guardians.

ANNUAL PARISH RETREAT

I t was recently announced by the Catholic Community Foundation of Santa Clara County that our parish is the recipient of several grant

awards: $2500 was awarded for the ongoing promotion of “Stewardship

as a Way of Life” by holding a parish retreat and hospitality gatherings and by providing Stewardship educational oppor-tunities.

$5000 was awarded for the project “Faith Formation for Youth and Young Adults.” Funds will offset the costs of a variety of faith formation opportunities.

$6000 was awarded for the project “Outreach – Fulfilling the Mis-sion of Mercy” to increase the scope of our parish outreach to the needy and homeless in our community.

$250 was awarded for the project “Musical Training for Musicians/Choirs” and will allow all choir members to attend on-site vocal workshops.

Reflexión al Evangelio de hoy: Mateo 18,21-35 PERDÓN

Unos diez años antes, un padre e hijo se distanciaron cuando el negocio en el que eran socios se fue a bancarrota. El hijo culpó al padre. No se hablaron más. Entonces el padre se puso gravemente enfermo. La madre llamó al hijo y le dijo que viniera a verlo pronto. El hijo entró con vergüenza a su habitación en el hospital. El padre hizo un gesto para que se acercara y susurró: “¿Acaso pensaste que podrías hacer algo que me hiciera dejar de amarte?” El rencor y la cólera son abominables, nos dice la primera lectura de Sirácide. Piensa en tu fin. Deja de odiar. Vive conforme a los mandamientos. Como escribe san Pablo en Romanos, para el Señor vivimos y para el Señor morimos. En el decimosexto aniversario del 11 de septiembre de 2001, para nosotros en Estados Unidos todavía no nos es fácil perdonar. Sin embargo, la parábola de Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy nos recuerda la compasión de Dios. El inmenso pecado de la humanidad ha sido perdonado y borrado del libro. Tene-

CORRESPONSABLES DE LOS DONES DE DIOS

“Yo confieso” Una forma del Rito Penitencial al comienzo de la Misa es el Confiteor tradicional, o “yo confieso”, es una oración que antes era ora-da por el sacerdote solo al pie del altar, pero que ahora es orada por toda la asamblea. El Confiteor es a la vez personal (confieso) y comunal, orando en voz alta, juntos. Reconocemos que el pecado no sólo nos separa de Dios; el pecado se interpone entre nosotros y los demás, aislándonos. Reconocemos que el pecado tiene mu-chas dimensiones, individuales y comunales: pecados de pensa-miento, palabra, obra y omisión. El pecado no es algo que nos sucede; el pecado es algo que hacemos. En el Confiteor, toma-mos la responsabilidad de nuestras propias acciones. La repetida insistencia en nuestra “culpa”, con el gesto ritual de golpear el pecho, un antiguo signo de penitencia, no tiene por objeto reducir nuestra autoestima. Más bien, reconoce nuestro instinto humano para transferir la culpa cada vez que puede (“El diablo me hizo hacerlo”). Esta oración nos detiene brevemente. Asumimos la res-ponsabilidad por nosotros mismos, nuestras acciones, nuestro fracaso para actuar. Entonces clamamos a Dios en esas palabras antiguas, Kyrie, eleison (Señor, ten piedad). LA FIESTA DE LA FE (NUESTRA LITURGIA)

Este año, la Iglesia celebrará el Domingo Catequético el 17 de septiembre de 2017. El tema de 2017 será “Vivir como discípulos misioneros”. Los que la Comunidad ha designado a servir como catequistas serán llamados sucesivamente para ser comisionado por su ministerio. Domingo Catequético es una maravillosa oportu-nidad para reflexionar sobre el papel que desempeña cada persona, en virtud del Bautismo, en la transmisión de la fe y ser un testimo-nio del Evangelio. Domingo Catequético es una oportunidad para que todos puedan volver a dedicarse a esta misión como una comu-nidad de fe. ¿Cómo son los padres, quienes son catequistas primarios de sus hijos, reconocidos en el Domingo Catequético? Los padres son realmente los catequistas primarios de sus hijos. Ellos preparan la tierra y plantan las primeras semillas de la fe. El Domingo Catequético, no sólo destaca la labor de los catequistas en las parroquias y escuelas, sino también encomiendan a los pa-dres y tutores a tomar muy en serio su papel de hacer de sus hoga-res católicos un lugar donde la fe se transmita a la siguiente gene-ración. Por ello, el rito de la bendición de los catequistas utilizado en Domingo Catequético incluye también una bendición a los pa-dres y tutores.

La Fundación de la Comunidad Católica del Condado de Santa Clara anunció recientemente que nuestra parroquia ha sido beneficiada con varios subsidios:

$2,500.00 se concedieron para la promoción en curso de “Corresponsabilidad como un Estilo de Vida” mediante la cele-bración de un retiro parroquial y reuniones de hospitalidad y oportunidades educativas de Corresponsabilidad. $5,000.00 se concedieron para el proyecto “Formación de Fe para los Jóvenes Y Adultos Jóvenes”. Los fondos compensarán los costos de una variedad de oportunidades de formación en la fe. $6,000.00 se concedieron para el proyecto “Servicios Sociales, Cumpliendo la Misión de Misericordia” para aumentar el alcance de nuestra parroquia a los necesitados y personas sin hogar en nuestra comunidad. $250.00 se concedieron para el proyecto “Entrenamiento Musical para Músicos y Coros” y permitirá a todos los miembros de coros a asistir a talleres vocales.

Chúa Nhật Thứ 24 Thường Niên

Lời Chúa : Khi ấy, Phêrô đến thưa cùng Chúa Giêsu rằng: "Lạy Thầy, khi anh em xúc phạm đến con, con phải tha thứ cho họ mấy lần. Có phải đến bảy lần không?" Chúa Giêsu đáp: "Thầy không bảo con phải tha đến bảy lần, nhưng đến bảy mươi lần bảy. Nước Trời cũng giống như ông vua kia muốn tính sổ với các đầy tớ. ...Tên đầy tớ độc ác kia, ta đã tha hết nợ cho ngươi, vì ngươi đã van xin ta; còn ngươi, sao ngươi không chịu thương bạn ngươi như ta đã thương ngươi?" Chủ nổi giận, trao y cho lý hình hành hạ, cho đến khi trả hết nợ. "Vậy Cha Ta trên trời cũng xử với các con đúng như thế, nếu mỗi người trong các con không hết lòng tha thứ cho anh em mình" (Mt 18,21-35).

Anh chị em thân mến, Hôm nay Chúa Nhật thứ 24 Thường Niên, Phúc Âm Thánh Matthêu cho thấy Chúa Giêsu luôn dạy chúng ta về nhân đức yêu thương, và trong đức yêu thương Chúa đòi hỏi chúng ta cần phải tha thứ cho nhau. Thánh Phê-rô hỏi Chúa Giêsu tha thứ bảy lần đủ chưa? Đối với Thánh Phê-rô, tha thứ bảy lần là đã rộng rãi lắm rồi, vì có nhiều người không thể tha thứ hơn ba lần, mà chúng ta thường gọi là “bất quá tam”. Quả thật tha thứ không phải dễ. Họ ăn đũa trả miếng theo phương thức của đời sòng phẳng quen rồi, mà chúng ta thường được nghe là, lấy răng thì đền răng, lấy mắt thì đền mắt, thiếu nợ thì trả tiền, và lấy mạng thì đền mạng. Thánh Phêrô tưởng rằng Thầy Giêsu sẽ hài lòng và khen ngài là rộng rãi. Nhưng không phải thế, Thánh Phêrô lại một lần kinh ngạc khi nghe Chúa Giêsu chỉnh ngài. "Thầy không bảo con phải tha đến bảy lần, nhưng đến bảy mươi lần bảy" (Mt 18,22). Văn hóa của người Do Thái hiểu số bảy là số hoàn hảo, vì Chúa hoàn tất mọi công trình tạo dựng của Chúa trong vòng bảy ngày, nên tha bảy mươi lần bảy nghĩa là tha hết tất cả, có thể hiểu là luôn luôn tha khi có nhu cầu cần phải tha. Chúa dạy chúng ta cần phải tha cho đến khi hoàn tất. Có lẽ không chỉ có Thánh Phêrô ngạc nhiên khi nghe Chúa dạy như thế, mà nhiều người Kitô đã được rửa tội đều khó chấp nhận được, nên Chúa Giêsu mới kể dụ ngôn của người đầy tớ bị mắc nợ nhà vua: Anh ta van xin lòng thương xót của nhà vua, nhưng lại không biết tha thứ nợ cho đồng loại mình, nên cuối cùng đã bị nhà vua gọi trở lại, và đòi lại hết tất cả các nợ đã được tha dựa theo cách anh đã đối xử với người đồng loại. Theo lẽ công bằng, thì anh ta phải trả hết nợ cho ông vua, nhưng ông vua đã thương xót và tha hết nợ cho anh ta, mà anh ta không bắt chước ông vua để thương xót xóa nợ cho người đồng loại, nên anh ta đã không xứng đáng được hưởng lòng thương xót của nhà vua, vì thế tất cả nợ của anh đều bị lôi ra để tính lại. Sau khi kể xong dụ ngôn đó, Chúa Giêsu đã quả quyết rằng : “Vậy Cha Ta trên trời cũng xử với các con đúng như thế, nếu mỗi người trong các con không hết lòng tha thứ cho anh em mình” (Mt 18,35). Như vậy những kẻ đòi tính toán theo lẽ công bằng cho ngưòi anh em, thì Chúa cũng sẽ tính với họ theo lẽ công bằng, chứ không theo lòng thương xót của Chúa. Đi vào Thiên Đàng chỉ được chọn một trong hai cửa : cửa công lý hay cửa của Lòng Chúa Thương Xót. Vì yêu thương Chúa Giêsu đã vâng lời Thiên Chúa Cha xuống thế làm người để đền tội cho nhân loại, Ngài đã nói rằng : “Chính Thầy là con đường, là sự thật và là sự sống. Không ai có thể đến với Chúa Cha mà không qua Thầy” (Ga 14,6). Câu này Chúa cho chúng ta biết rằng không một ai có thể qua cửa công lý mà vào được Thiên đàng để gặp Thiên Chúa Cha, mà họ chỉ có hy vọng duy nhất để được ơn cứu rỗi, là phải qua cửa của Lòng Chúa Thương Xót. Có nghĩa là Chúa Giêsu phải trả nợ bằng giá Máu của Ngài để cứu chuộc tất cả nhân loại. Tất cả những ai qua cửa công lý đều sa hỏa ngục hết, vì tất cả mọi người đều phạm tội. Nếu đi qua cửa công lý, thì không cần nhờ đến ơn cứu độ của Chúa Giêsu. Tất cả các lần Chúa tha thứ trong tòa giải tội đều bị đòi trả lại Chúa hết. Giá Máu của Chúa Giêsu chỉ đền trả cho những người biết thương xót đồng loại. Trong Tám Mối Phúc Thật, Chúa dạy : “Phúc thay ai xót thương người, vì họ sẽ được Thiên Chúa xót thương” (Mt 5,7). Cho nên những ai muốn làm môn đệ Chúa mà không vâng lời Chúa để tha thứ, thì không thể làm môn đệ Chúa được. Đây chính là lý do mà Giáo Hội Công Giáo luôn luôn chống lại án tử hình. Vì tất cả những ai ủng hộ án tử hình, sẽ không được Thiên Chúa thương xót. Một trong những việc bác ái chúng ta có thể thi hành cho người đang hấp hối là khuyên họ hãy tha thứ, vì họ sắp phải ra trước Tòa Thiên Chúa. Nếu không chịu tha thứ, thì theo lẽ công bằng họ không thể thoát lửa hỏa ngục đời đời. Nếu họ bằng lòng tha thứ thì họ mới được ơn cứu độ. Lúc đó, Bí tích Hòa giải và việc xức dầu mới có giá trị cho người đang hấp hối. Trong kinh Hòa bình, Thánh Phanxicô Assisi có dạy, “CHÍNH KHI THỨ THA LÀ KHI ĐƯỢC THA THỨ”. THA THỨ chính là CHÌA KHOÁ để vào NƯỚC TRỜI. Nguyện xin cho chúng con biết thứ tha như lời Chúa dạy để được ơn tha thứ của Chúa. Amen. Lm. Anthony Nguyễn Duy Tường.

GIỜ CẦU NGUYỆN CỘNG ĐOÀN

Tạ ơn Chúa cho giờ cầu nguyện Cộng Đoàn tối thứ sáu vừa qua, chúng ta đã cùng nhau cầu nguyện cho những nhu cầu cá nhân, gia đình, giáo xứ, và biết được cách thức cầu nguyện để đón nhận ơn Chúa qua việc thực hành 5 bước: - Sám hối và tin vào Thiên Chúa. - Tha thứ đề được Chúa thứ tha. - Từ bỏ tội lỗi và những cám dỗ của nó. - Tuyên bố thuộc về Chúa. - Xin Chúa chúc lành. Xin Chúa tiếp tục gia tăng lòng tin nơi chúng ta, để chúng ta luôn đón nhận được sự chữa lành của Thiên Chúa qua Thánh Lễ Misa mỗi ngày.

Nghi Thức Thống Hối Trong Thánh Lễ Misa

Cùng nhau đứng trước sự hiện diện của Thiện Chúa, chúng ta nhìn nhận sự yếu đuối, tội lỗi, lỗi lầm và sa ngã của chúng ta. Nhưng nghi thức thống hối thực sự ít chú ý về tội lỗi của chúng ta mà hướng về lòng thương xót của Thiên Chúa. Đây không phải là lúc để xưng tội cá nhân, giống như một bí tích hòa giải vắn tắt. Đó là, một nghi thức để chuẩn bị, chúng ta chuẩn bị ca ngợi lòng thương xót của Chúa Kitô khi chúng ta nhìn nhận sự yếu đuối của mình. Khi Simon Phêrô chứng kiến mẻ cá kỳ diệu - khi ông nhận ra Người đang trên thuyền với ông-Ông sấp mặt dưới chân Chúa Giêsu và nói: “Lạy Chúa, xin tránh xa con, vì con là kẻ tội lỗi (Luca 5: 8). Chúng ta cũng giống Phêrô. Càng nhận ra sự hiện diện của Chúa chúng ta càng nhận ra tội lỗi, sự yếu đuối của mình. Nghi thức thống hối trong Thánh lễ có nhiều hình thức, kinh thú tội truyền thống hoặc "Tôi thú nhận" với một lời kinh nguyện, được xướng hoặc hát lên bởi phó tế hay ca viên với sự đáp ứng của cả cộng đoàn. Nghi thức thống hối luôn bao gồm Kyrie, eleison; Christe, eleison - Lạy Chúa, xin thương xót; Lạy Chúa Kitô, xin thương xót. Lời cầu nguyện Cổ xưa này của Hy Lạp đến với phụng vụ Rôma từ phương Đông, và vẫn còn vang lên trong tiếng cầu kinh nơi các Giáo Đường Đông Phương.
