Celebrating 165 years of Pastoral Service to the Catholic Community of Berea
Mission Statement
St. Mary is a faith community which worships together, follows the teachings of Jesus Christ in our everyday lives,
evangelizes others by our lives and actions, gives generously of our time and resources in service to others, shows
compassion and love towards one another, provides religious education and works for social justice for all.
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 5, 2018
We sing often, “I am the bread of life. You who come to me shall not
hunger; and who believe in me shall not thirst.” The crowd mistakenly
thought that Moses gave their ancestors the bread of heaven. The Israel-
ites needed the reminder that the Lord gave them bread to eat. Like
them, we can forget that Jesus feeds us to become one with us, and bake
us into bread for others. Too often we mistakenly view the Eucharist as
something meant only for us to receive. We forget that celebrating the
Eucharist TRANSFORMS us to become what we eat and drink (St.
Augustine), the Body and Blood of Christ. We get so caught up in the
sign of Christ’s “Real Presence,” we forget that Jesus feeds us to become
REALLY PRESENT to others through the way we live.
So, like the Ephesians we need to “put on a new self and live in right-
eousness and truth so others can find the words that come from the
mouth of God in our witness.” [Living the Word, Year B 2018]

Youth Engagement
– Teen Initiative (YETI)
met for the first time this past Sun-
day and according to Teen Leader
Chris Garr, Deacon Tom, Fr. Mike
and Fr. Max, who stopped by, it
was a GREAT first gathering!
There are some “kinks” to work
on as we move ahead; but what
first initiative doesn’t have some
things to work out? All will be
well, as St. Julian of Norwich
prays, “all will be well!”
THANKS for your support
and more to come as we teens are
Living Great-fully!
This past week, the parish
Staff met and has been busy putting the FINAL TOUCHES on the Calendar for the new year. CERTAINLY Mon-
day nights are set aside for Faith Formation – Grades 1 – 8, or as many still call it, PSR, which will INCLUDE
some Parent nights for faith and learning; and we are still looking for a time and
place for RCIA. The Men’s Night will be Thursday and Women’s Night ALSO on
Thursdays. There are LOTS of sports teams and LOTS of requests for the Fr. Garrity
Center for practices and games – SO – if you want a room or place for a SPECIAL
EVENT, get your request in early.
We’re planning a Parish Anniversary Dinner on Wednesday August 15th at 6pm fol-
lowing the 5pm Mass AND a special Churches Tour of many of the historical
Churches in Cleveland. The Annual Thanksgiving Pasta Dinner will be on the calen-
dar AND a few more Donut Sundays and Pancake Breakfasts. It’s going to be GREAT Living at St. Mary this
year!
Great THANKS for your constant generosity in your weekly Offering! Grateful Living!

Mother Teresa
“Jesus: The Living Bread,
Understanding Love”
The meaning of this Eucharist is under-
standing love, Christ understood. He un-
derstood that we have a terrible hunger for God. He
understood that we have been created to be loved,
and so He made Himself a Bread of Life and He said,
“Unless you eat My flesh and drink My blood, you
cannot live, you cannot love, you cannot serve.” You
must eat this Bread and the goodness of the love of
Christ to share His understanding love.
Excerpted from: Love: A Fruit Always in Season Daily Meditations by Mother
Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987)
Family Perspective
Pope Francis is reminding Christian families to guard
against being swept away by a hectic, competitive
throw-away society. Jesus calls us to center our work
and activity in Him—the bread of life! Make sure to
make time for family meals, Sabbath rest, prayer and
conversation that includes God.

Music Ministry & Liturgy Notes
By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy
LAST WEEK’S ERROR, AND FOOD FOR THOUGHT
I must admit to a lapse of memory: last week, I said that the
choir picnic sign-up sheet would be up and ready for people
to fill out, but that definitely didn’t happen. It is up this week
instead! So to everyone who will be coming to our August
26th Choir Picnic, make sure to put down what you will be
bringing. It isn’t a successful potluck unless everyone helps
out!
There is an easy theme for this weekend’s readings: bread!
Last week, Jesus fed a crowd of thousands with just two fish
and five barley loaves. This week, the Lord is feeding the
Israelites with manna that he has rained down from heaven,
and in the gospel reading, Jesus announces that he is the
bread of life. God is always there to help us through our
troubles, to give us inspiration and energy when we are lack-
ing. By having faith in our Savior, our Father, our Spirit, we
do not need to worry so much about earthly things. The
hymns that I have chosen for this week all clearly reflect the
text that we listen to from the readings. We need food to
survive, surely, but we also need spiritual nourishment for
our souls as well. Make sure that you are thinking about the
texts as you sing rather than just rambling off words! The
mass is an interactive celebration that needs focus the entire
time!
Traditional Choir, Contemporary Choir, and Youth
Choir are off for the summer. All choir members are wel-
come to sing up in the loft during weekend masses. Summer
is a perfect time to audition for involvement in one of our
ensembles, especially for prelude solos! If you are interested
in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing
an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass
up in the loft. Please contact the music ministry office for
more information: 440.243.3877 ext 27.
Join us today on the grounds of the Center for Pastoral
Leadership (28700 Euclid Ave. in Wickliffe) from 12:00
noon - 10:00pm.
“Without the contribution of women, society is less alive, cul-
ture impoverished, and peace less stable.”
--St. John Paul II, Angelus Address 7/23/95
Our Feminine Genius welcomes and invites all women of the
parish to join us as we meet to share and grow in our faith
through book studies, speakers, and videos. If interest exists,
we hope to provide opportunities for the group to gather for social as well as spiritual activities.
Please contact: Alane Mastandrea or Amanda Mazi at (440) 243-3877

Marianist Mission P.O. Box 340998 Dayton, OH 45430-1033
A MESSAGE from the Provincial Dear Friends,
This letter is my last as provincial of the Marianist Province of the United States. My term ends on July 31, 2018, just after the conclusion of our General Chapter meeting in Rome. These past eight years have flown by.
When I first received a call from the Marianist Father Manuel Cortes, our Superior General, asking to assume the responsibility, I was totally surprised. That was July 2009. I had been living and working in West and East Africa for 27 tears. Returning to major leadership was the very last thing on my radar. But, as with other experiences in my life, this time has been a blessing for me.
I especially have enjoyed my relationships with the lay leaders at. St. Mary’s University in San Anto-nio, University of Dayton in Ohio and Chaminade University of Honolulu. Such dedication and commitment in these Marianist educational collaborators! I have equally enjoyed the times I’ve visited our Marianist-sponsored schools and retreat centers. I’ve celebrated all-school Masses at most of these 19 schools! The Eucharistic celebrations at Saint Louis School in Honolulu, Chaminade College Prep in Los Angeles, St. John Vianney High School in St. Louis, Purcell Marian in Cincinnati and Colegio San Jose , Puerto Rico, come readily to mind. So much good energy and youthful enthusiasm! I shall miss all of this very much.
I’ve been privileged to visit Marianists in India at least twice yearly, as well as the brothers and priests in Eastern Africa several times since 2009. The Society of Mary is growing in these areas, just as the Catholic population continues to explode in these parts of the world. The Marianists in India and Africa are doing what Marianists have done here in the United States since 1850: Catholic education, lifting up the poor—working especially with poor mothers and children. What a gift to the Church and to these growing areas of our world!
I want to say a big, loving and heartfelt thank-you to all who read ALIVE magazine. Through your sup-port and generosity, we can continue the mission entrusted to us by our Founder, Blessed William Joseph Chaminade; in alliance with Mary, to bring Christ to our world and to witness a community of faith-filled and mission-minded religious men, dedicated to the Mother of the Lord. We could not do what we do without you.
Before I begin the next chapter of my Marianist life, I have requested to hike the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, an ancient 500-mile pilgrimage route across northern Spain to the shrine of St. James in Com-postela. As I make this pilgrimage, I will remember each of you and your families, asking the Lord and our Blessed Mother to fill you with peace and joy.
In gratitude,
Fr. Marty Father Martin Solma, SM Provincial
