Page 2 Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord Dear Friends in Christ,

Happy New Year again, and I may add, Merry Christmas too, as we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. In our Catholic/Christian tradition Christmas is not just for a day but a season that stretches from the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day to the Baptism of the Lord which comes up next Sunday. Within this season we celebrate the Epiph-any which is the revelation of Jesus, the Lord, to the Nations. The readings depict this revelation as the Magi, from

the East, come to pay their homage to the new born King. They come with gifts of Frankincense, an indication of His priest-hood; Gold, an indication of His kingship and Myrrh, (in view of His burial), which indicates that Jesus is the Christ, the anoint-ed one.

Our liturgical ceremonies this Christmas, leading to the New Year, were very beautiful thanks to all of you in your various ways and levels of participation. In particular I want to thank, on behalf of our parish, those who helped us to worship with such beauty, solemnity and dignity. We are grateful to our Deacon, the entire Liturgy, Music and the Arts and Environment teams. The Adult, Youth and Children Choirs, Ushers, Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers and especially our Staff made a lot of sacri-fices. Some of them had to be at many Masses to help. We thank them as we also thank all our parishioners for attending and for their generous gifts and support to our parish. Thank you also to all of you who sent cards, messages of good wishes, gifts and prayerful support to me in person. May God bless and replenish all of you as we continue to work together to make our parish a wonderful and loving community.

Lent will start early this year. Please mark you calendars for the following: 1. Ash Wednesday: Wednesday, February 10th. 2. Retreat: Light of the World Parish Retreat, February 19th-22nd (see details below) 3. Lenten Mission: With Fr. Martins Emeh, J.C.L., Pastor of St. Peters, Geneva, March 6th-9th 4. Year of Mercy Grand Pilgrimage: October 31st-November 12th. Rome & The Holy Land Combo (find details below).

Greetings from Nigeria.

In Christ,

Fr. Godwin

You are invited to shine in the light of Jesus Christ, our Lord, Savior and Brother

Please join us at the Light of the World Retreat

February 19-22, 2016

Do not be concerned about where you are at on your faith journey. Jesus will meet you where you are, take your hand and guide you – if you let Him.

There is no special preparation for this retreat. You do not need to bring anything. Just come! Snacks will be provided Friday and Monday nights. All meals will be provided Saturday and Sunday.

You will not be bored! The retreat is filled with insights, fresh perspectives, humor, really good food, real life testimonies, and lively discussions. It will touch your heart, open your mind and deepen your faith – GUAR-ANTEED!

We ask that you commit to all four days of the re-treat. The retreat builds on the experiences of the day before so it is necessary to attend the entire retreat. We may be able to work around the need to miss an hour or two if necessary

“Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protec-tion of nature is also incompatible with the justification of abortion. How can we genuinely teach the importance of concern for other vulnerable beings… if we fail to protect a human embryo, even when its presence is uncomforta-ble and creates difficulties?” ~Pope Francis, Laudatio Si, no. 120 ©2015 Libreria Editrice Vaticana, Used with Permission. Car to Donate? Please contact the parish office at 815-385-0025 if you or someone you know has a car that you are not using and would be willing to donate to help out a brother/sister in Christ. We

have had two recent requests and hope that we will be able to respond positively with your help.

Cold winter weather increases heating costs, exasperating the struggles of those working hard to make ends meet each month. A young couple with two small children found both of

themselves laid off within a few months. As they searched for jobs, they fell behind in their bills. ComEd recently sent them a shut-off notice, a potentially dangerous situation with the cold and one of their son’s asthma. Thanks to your generous donations, St. Vincent de Paul was able to pay a portion of the bill to avoid a shut-off. This young fam-ily is deeply grateful for the help and for the new job that is now on the horizon.

Jubilee Year of Mercy The Epiphany of the Lord

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Epiphany celebrates God's mercy shining on the magi from a guiding

star. Their kingdoms were far from Jerusalem, their religions far from God's covenant with Israel. At first the star led the magi to Jerusalem, where they could "recalculate" their quest with the help of God's own "GPS," the Jewish scriptures. How challenging and humbling for the magi to discover that they would find the world's Messiah not in a palace but with a poor couple in an insignificant village. That's where God's mercy, shining in the star, led the magi to worship Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Today the magi invite us to "recalculate" our life's journey during this Jubilee Year--to follow the star of God's mercy along the way of humble love, to discover a renewed personal relationship with Jesus ourselves and so become "guiding stars" leading other seekers to find Jesus, too. --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. Why You Should Join the March for Life Chicago

1. The March for Life Chicago is an annual event that takes place each year during the month of Janu-ary. It is held near the anniversary of the tragic day on which the Supreme Court decision, Roe vs. Wade, legalized abortion in the United States in 1973. Thousands of people from diverse ethnic, social, and religious backgrounds come together and march through the streets of downtown Chicago, com-memorating the many innocent lives lost after this decision. Through marching, they share a message of love for life, hoping to reclaim for our state and our nation the respect that all life deserves and promote

a culture that values life, from the moment of conception until natural death. 2. The March for Life Chicago saves babies! 3. The March for Life Chicago brings together Midwest religious leaders and members of all faiths and cultures. 4. The number of first-time marchers increases every year, giving more Illinoisans the opportunity to proudly display

their pro-life values. 5. You can be a part of the largest pro-life event in Illinois! Our goal is to increase the number of marchers from 4,000

to 8,000 this year. 6. Who doesn’t love dancing in the streets of Chicago during the middle of January? This is a great way to have fun

with your friends and make new friends too. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------—————————————-------------------------

Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Over the next few weeks, if you were to stroll around Prague or Budapest or Kraków, you might see curious graffiti scratched in chalk over some doorways: "20 C M B 16." The families dwelling behind those doors have celebrated the Epiphany door blessing. They have gathered before the feast-day meal, proba-

bly after Mass, and the head of the family has traced the sign of the cross on the piece of chalk. Standing on a ladder, the leader trac-es the numbers for the new year, and the letters C M B for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, Latin for "May Christ bless this house." The letters also point to the names that tradition has assigned to the mysterious magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar--although scripture tells us nothing of their number, their country, or their names.

The blessing speaks of journeys ended and journeys begun at the doorway, and prays that all journeys be as satisfying as was the magi's. It prays that the house beyond the door have the quality of love and peace that the magi marveled at when they at last arrived in Bethlehem. In some countries where the Soviet Union tried to impose a harsh atheism, the vigor of this household custom survived all efforts to erase Christian customs. In the years of struggle, the chalked blessings were a pervasive sign of defiance, and now in the light of new freedoms, they are a sign of the resilience of our tradition and the fulfillment of the magi's quest for meaning and peace.--Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
