~FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK~ Mustard seed blankets
A visitor to a small church in the farm country of Oregon tells of meeting a group of seventy ladies in the
church, knitting prayer shawls. They happily displayed their work: thousands of shawls, in every color, size
and pattern imaginable. They donated the shawls to hospices; they gave them to neighbors in pain.
One lady in the corner was knitting small blankets, much smaller than the shawls her coworkers were
making. Were these prayer shawls, too? the visitor asked.
“Oh, no, these are for stillborns. I make these so that the parents will have something intimate instead of
hospital issue. Every one of these is for a child who came close to this world. I finish one and then sit for a
moment and think of that child, that one child who will wear this blanket, if only for a moment.”
This is mustard seed faith: to realize the presence of God in the smallest, most hidden moments; to ignite a
spark of God’s light in the midst of unremitting darkness and pain; to reveal God’s mercy in focused, visible
ways, no matter how simple or small. Faith is the ability to see the potential in the smallest of things and the
courage and perseverance to unlock that potential. Humanity’s dreams of peace, community and justice will
be realized, first, in the everyday acts of such goodness of each one of us.
Dear Friends,
Our conference room in the Church Hall has been repainted and carpeted. It looks very nice. I hope all
who use that space will keep it clean and orderly.
Next weekend we will have our annual Mission Appeal to help the work of the Catholic Church in Nige-
ria. Please be generous in your support of the mission and welcome our missionary to our parish for our
weekend Masses.
Let us all work together to make our 59th Annual Festival a big success. It’s only a success if we all
work together!
On September 11, 2017, we will have a parish gathering of anyone who would like to help plan our vi-
sion for the next five years. All heads of organizations should be present or send a delegate to speak for your
group or ministry as we initiate this strategic plan.
Beginning with the month of September, we will have numerous opportunities for members of our parish
community to come and learn more about the Mass, the Sacraments of Healing, what the Church teaches
about Mary, Theological teachings of the Catholic Church, the Synoptic Gospels, and finally the Holy Eucha-
rist. These “classes” or informative sessions are open to every member of our parish running every Tuesday
evening from September 19 through October 24.
I’ll be meeting with members of a Passion play called “Tetelistai,” a production of the Cleveland Per-
forming Arts ministry. It is my hope that we will host the Passion play here at St. Patrick next Lent. More in-
formation will follow.
God bless you with a safe week ahead,
Fr. Mike

“The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good
seed in his field…He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field
is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom.” Matthew 13:24, 37-38
As children of God, we are all “good seeds,” blessed by God with the
potential to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s
plan when we share our talents and our financial gifts to help build
God’s kingdom on earth. Through our stewardship we sow “good
seeds” on earth to ultimately help each other get to Heaven!

Excerpt from What’s the Smoke For? Dear Johan,
I am always struck by the stern look on people’s faces when they are at church, especially when they
return from Communion. Where is the joy of Christianity?
Gentle Reader-
Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson, the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace,
tackled that very question when asked about the state of the liturgy. In response he expressed his surprise
that in the West, the same people who exhibit great passion and burst with excitement during sporting
events show little to no emotion during the celebration of the Eucharist. Though they have no problem
singing at football games, he continued, they seem to experience the singing of hymns in church as a
true penitential exercise. By contrast, he said, people in the African churches sing with gusto and on
occasion add some movement to express their joy at hearing the Good News.
Having just attended a baseball game, I can testify to the exuberance with which supporters cheer
their team. This, indeed, contrasts starkly with the blank faces and sealed lips of many people during the
celebration of the Eucharist. They seem as happy to be in church as they might be while at the dentist for a root canal.
The reality is that Christians have responded in varied ways to the mystery of salvation. For some this is a very serious matter
that ought to be pondered. For others this is a joyous reality that must be celebrated. This response is often related to the societal,
cultural, and ethnic characteristics of individuals and communities. When our churches were more homogenous, no one was sur-
prised by a neighbor’s reaction. Today, with the ever increasing diversity in our churches, some people prefer sober expressions,
others will be more exuberant. All of these are valid expressions. All of these add color to the liturgy.
In those communities that still largely suffer under “northern exposure,” solemn containment will be the premier mode of litur-
gical behavior. However, even those communities ought to remember the difference between solemn containment and a frown. The
fact is that we have been saved and that is something to be exuberantly celebrated, not quietly endured.

All of us have so much to be thankful
for each day. When we awake to a new
day, when a friend is in touch with us, for
the food we eat, for the water that flows
into our homes, for flowers, birds, trees,
our health, for doctors close by who care
for us: the list can go on and on.
Thanking God should be a part of our
daily lives. It is also good to tell God about
worries and concerns: about jobs, relationships, family, health,
whatever comes to mind. Sharing those thoughts with God will
often help to lessen the burdens we carry.
Take time– lots of it– each day to talk to God in prayer. If
you spend time with family members or friends, engage them in
prayer with you, and listen to how they share their joys/concerns/
thanks with God.
Summer Prayer Creator of all, thank You for summer!
Thank You for the warmth of the sun
and the increased daylight.
Thank You for the beauty I see all
around me and for the opportunity to
be outside and enjoy Your creation.
Thank you for the increased time I
have to be with my friends and family,
and for the more casual pace of the summer season.
Draw me closer to You this summer.
Teach me how I can pray no matter
where I am or what I am doing.
Warm my soul with the awareness of
Your presence, and light my path with
Your Word and Counsel.
As I enjoy Your creation, create in me
a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You. Amen.
